FAQ’s FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS CONTINUED

Q: Am I allowed to enroll in more than one art class? A: YES! As long as you have completed the prerequisite class, you may sign up for as many art classes as you like. Remember there is a fee per class, as you will use many materials in each different class. Q: What if I’m interested in IB or AP art? A: WHS has separate IB Art courses that are unique because the student can make artwork that is 2D or 3D. Art I credit is not a prerequisite for IB Art, but you must be part of the WWHS IB program. For enrollment in AP Studio Art, for which you can receive college credit for your portfolio, you must complete at least two years of Art before taking this rigorous course. Q: Will I have the opportunity to participate in art shows and art competitions throughout the year? A: YES! Your art teacher will explain during class about many optional art shows and competitions. These may include but are not limited to: RRISD Secondary Art Show, VASE (Visual Art Scholastic Event), Black History Art Contest, Hispanic Heritage Art Contest, PTSA Reflections Art Contest, Campus Gallery Shows, etc.

The Visual Art program at Westwood consists of drawing, painting, ceramics and sculpture classes, as well as IB and AP Studio Art programs. Our visual art classes promote excellence and each student's individual artistic potential. We believe that an Art education can enrich a student's quality of life by encouraging creativity, higher-order thinking, problemsolving skills, application skills, and many other characteristics that benefit the life of a student. ART CLUBS National Art Honor Society All current art students can participate in NAHS. The main focus of NAHS is doing work for charity. In the past, students have had an art auction to raise money for the Red Cross and Haiti relief, made cards for nursing homes, and wrapped and donated presents for Blue Santa. There is a GPA and service hour requirement to stay in good standing. Sponsor: Brittany Skillern Ceramics Club Any art student may join Ceramics Club, however the club’s focus is on raising money for the WWHS Ceramics classes. The money raised helps buy equipment and materials used in the classes. The club also does some events that are centered on ceramic related charity events. Sponsor: Cari Washburn
