A REPORT ON THE VISITS TO KENYAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES BETWEEN 12TH JUNE – 20TH JUNE, 2013 ============================================================================================================================================
Visit Conducted by:
Mr. Kevin Oyale Director of Programs, WSCSD Email:
[email protected] Tel.: +254(0)714562151
INTRODUCTION The following were the objectives of the WSCSD's visits to the Kenyan universities and colleges: 1. To establish contacts/working relations between the World Student Community for Sustainable Development (WSCSD) and various student associations and the university administration in supporting the Greening Universities Initiative being championed by the WSCSD, 2. To follow up on some of the students who attended the 2012 World Student Summit for Sustainability and the 2013 International Day for Biological Diversity celebrations, 3. Identify specific activities planned by the students in contribution to the Adopt a River and Forest Initiatives and their resource needs. The following fifteen (15) universities were visited: Kisii university, Maseno University, Masinde Muliro University, Moi university, Kabianga University, Egerton University, Technical Uuniversity of Mombasa, Pwani University, Mt. Kenya University, Jomo Kenyatta University, Kenyatta University, University of Nairobi, Zetech College, Technical University of Kenya and the Multimedia University of Kenya. Only the above universities were visited due to resource and time constraints. Nevertheless, WSCSD plans to reach out to all universities and colleges and collaborate with them in implementing some of our sustainable developments goals. Challenges 1. Some universities e.g. Kabianga, Egerton, Pwani university are off session which hindered establishing contacts with the key people 2. Lack of formal documents outlining WSCSD's projects, MOUs and linkages with other partners. 3. Limited funds to visit all the universities or colleges within the regions Recommendations: 1. WSCSD to liaise with its partners and stakeholders to ensure successful launch and implementation of the water and biodiversity projects 2. Monitoring and Evaluation should be a top priority factor for WSCSD. 3. WSCSD should assist the students associations fully as they as are also committing their time fully. 4. WSCSD should organize a workshop for the University student leaders with the following objectives: • Sharing experiences amongst themselves • Reporting to the WSCSD secretariat and partners on: • acquisition of space within their campuses for tree nursery establishment • the forest and watersheds/rivers they have identified for adoption • their plan for launching and implementing their proposed activities • the support they need towards greening their universities The WSCSD's programs are streamlined in the following sectors:- Water, Energy, Food, Waste, Biodiversity, Health, Transport and Education forming eight thematic Working Groups. Students or student associations will form or join one or more specific working group of depending on his/her interests or competencies. For every university, the WSCSD will appoint an existing student association or student leaders or support the formation of an Environmental Student Association (where there is none) to act as the focal point for liaison with the WSCSD's secretariat in implementing campus sustainability and community outreach programs.
