In an age of video games, cable TV and the Internet, it’s never been more important to encourage your kids to unplug themselves and experience a real childhood Magic improves self esteem The self discipline to master the tricks, problem solving, and performance skills required in ‘magic lessons’ were more effective than the existing ‘selfesteem and confidence’ lessons taught in the PSHE curriculum. Magic develops acting skill Magic is a performance art. OK, it’s practiced in private, but has to be performed to other people. Children learn about presentation, performance, and timing just like an actor. They learn to make eye contact with spectators, how to project their voice, develop a character and understand how people think. Unlike playing computer games, magic encourages children to interact with their friends and family. It naturally leads to your child wanting to put on a ‘magic show’ for their family and friends to show off their new skills. As a parent this can be a real bonding time, as mum or dad takes on the roll of the magicians assistant or the audience It helps develop lateral thinking Studying a magic trick and working out how to present it, naturally encourages a child to problem solve and think up new presentations and variations of a trick. As the child becomes more knowledgeable about magic techniques, there tends to be a pull towards developing their own tricks and methods. This is exactly the kind of creative leap, that can really help a child both in their studies and later life. Improved dexterity Chances are, most kids already have amazing dexterity in their thumbs, especially if they love to text or play on their xbox to relax. However, that’s nothing compared to what can be developed by manipulating cards or coins in a magic routine. Hand eye coordination, timing, and reflexes are developed as new tricks are mastered. Magic can also be a perfect complement to learning a musical instrument for this very reason. Magic can make a child more socially aware. Magic encouraged children to look at issues from other people’s perspectives. I Your child learns a skill designed to be performed, just as much as the quiet practice required to develop it. A child that can perform a few amazing tricks has a perfect ‘ice-breaker’ and soon gets a reputation as an entertainer. New friendships develop and with magic clubs in most large towns and cities a social community opens up to them.

It’s a great way to financial independence Fast forward several years, and your child will be flying the nest and making their way in the ‘grown up world’. Giving your child a skill that can fund their way through college or help support them as they set up on their own, is a true gift to give them. Working magicians can earn a considerable income from just a few days or nights work a month. Having a part time job performing magic, is a great way to get an income without taking away time from their studies. You could be saying goodbye to the prospect of a student loan! Chances are, you have searched the Internet for magic tricks to learn, found a LOAD of magic sites and were surprised at the HUGE range of books, DVDs and tricks each magic shop website offers. It's very confusing! Where do you start? Our advice is to register with The Wonder Magic Factory at www.wondermagicfactory.com. Then contact them by using the Contact us form. Becoming a Magician Despite all of the glamor and fame of being a magician, becoming one is not easy. Not only is it a big responsibility, but it also requires hard work, respect and most of all patience. If you are interested in becoming a magician, there are some things you need to learn about magic. First of all, you need to ask yourself what you want to do by becoming one. Do you want to trick people into believing you have actual supernatural abilities or perform clever illusions and tricks? This question should help you determine what your motive behind your wish to become a magician actually is. Having said that, you should know that to become a magician takes more than just learning a few magic tricks… A magician is essentially an entertainer who performs magic tricks having mastered the art of illusion. This professional makes his living by performing at public appearances in front of people often as part of magic shows or other types of social gatherings e.g. weddings using cards, coins, dice, animals or other materials to complete his magic routine tricks. Performing for your family and friends can be very rewarding. Magic is a great hobby and can become a life long obsession. Showing a trick, leads people to want more,

and spurs you on to keep learning. However, to develop further, you will need to take the next step and perform for the public. The dynamics are quite different

Learn some basic magic tricks. There are tricks out there for all levels of magicians. Simple sleight of hand tricks and card tricks are a great place for younger magicians to begin! If you’re enjoying basic tricks learn more fundamentals like the back palm vanish, card rise, or coin knuckle roll. Some of these tricks may require some preparation before performing for an audience. For others, you may want to ask a friend to assist you with the trick. While all magicians know sleight of hand, not all of them specialize in these closeup tricks. You can also look into niche fields of magic, including: Club magic: working in front of medium audiences in a local magic club. Stage magic: working in front of large audiences in a large auditorium or performance venue. Escape tricks: escaping from handcuffs, strait jackets, or heavy chains in front of an audience. Mentalism: talking with audience members and performing tricks of clairvoyance or telepathy. Watch other magicians perform. Masters of the art know what an audience wants to see, so pay attention to what types of tricks and what styles modern magicians use. See which magicians appeal to you the most, and try to think about what about their style and approach to the audience appeals to you. You can watch contemporary magicians or even watch videos of some famous magicians to see how they master their art. Here are some magicians you may want to observe carefully: David Copperfield Tommy Wonder Lisa Menna[1] Sue-Anne Webster Doug Henning Penn & Teller Harry Houdini S.H. Sharpe Criss Angel Read magic books and biographies of magicians. Most magicians started off by going to the library and checking out books about magic and reading them from cover to cover. This can help you have an understanding of the discipline that is truly required to be a magician. Reading and researching will also help you develop skills in private, rather than making mistakes in front of an audience[2] Check out books like:

The Tarbell Course in Magic Volumes 1-8, by Harlan Tarbell and Ralph Reed Books of Wonder, by Tommy Wonder Strong Magic, by Darwin Ortiz Drawing Room Conjuring, by Professor Hoffman The Fitzkee Trilogy, by Dariel Fitzkee Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic, by Mark Wilson The Amateur Magician’s Handbook, by Henry Hay For some Free magic PDF Books go to the wonder magic factory

Ask a magician to mentor you. Once you’ve gained some skills, reach out to a local professional magician and ask if you can be an apprentice and receive some helpful feedback. You’d be surprised by how helpful many professional magicians can be, remembering when they were starting out.[4] You just have to be receptive to feedback and be ready to take some criticism that can improve your craft. A local magician that you can talk to in person will be more useful than an online mentorship. Attend local magic shows, and approach one of the more experienced magicians. Say something like, “I enjoyed your magic act, and I’m trying to become a magician myself. I’d love to show you some tricks I’ve been working on, and to get your feedback on how I can improve.” The magician might not show you any tricks, but they could give you tips on how to perform your first tricks like a pro. If you don’t have this advantage, try to learn from your mistakes as much as possible.

Innovate new tricks or trick combinations. Think of an idea that has never been done before. For example, make strings disappear from a guitar. Then, decide how you will accomplish the effect. Now, think of a way to make the trick convincing. Once you’ve got all the parts planned out, start practicing the trick. The public may enjoy some old classics, but you should avoid certain cliché tricks, like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. (Instead, make it appear in a box!) As a more advanced technique, try to merge several tricks together to create a new effect. For example, after you turn a ball into a tissue, make a coin appear out of the tissue; then, make the coin go through your hand.

Start performing for friends and acquaintances.

When you’re just starting out, don’t expect to work a corporate event with 500 people. You’ll have to start with the people you know, such as your friends, family, or acquaintances. Performing in front of a smaller, more intimate audience will make you more comfortable when it’s time to get in front of crowds of strangers. It can take time to build up enough skills to get work this way. Make sure that you’re really ready when you start performing for an audience and you’ll raise your chances of getting notice

It won’t happen overnight Don’t think you could do a TV show after just a year or two in magic. Writing a great song might take you five minutes, and if you sing it beautifully and it resonates with

someone – it’s a hit. It’s one thing learning the magic, but it's another thing being a performer, especially on TV. It’s the Wild West out there for budding magicians It’s a competitive industry. I guess a lot of people keep a lot of stuff to themselves, and even though it’s a niche market it’s tough to get work. It’s like any industry, really – you get people that genuinely want to help you out, and then you get some that don’t want you to succeed and be better than them. They want the work, the money, the contacts and don’t really want to share that.

Social skills are crucial A lot of magicians tend to be quite awkward and a bit socially inept because they’ve spent so many hours practicing in front of the mirror, so when you have to go out and show people it can be quite daunting. Good social skills help you connect with people better, and if people like you they’ll automatically like what you do.

Even if magic is just a hobby now, you can begin edging your way down the path to becoming a professional magician over the next few years. To make that journey both productive and successful, focus on the following aspects of your career. If you do, you’ll find the journey, long as it may be, to be rewarding in more ways than you can imagine

Practice This is the most obvious piece of advice a hobbyist who wants to become a professional can be given, but that does not make it any less useful. Practice is key to becoming a pro. Focus on learning two or three effects. Keep doing these over and over until you can do them better than anybody else out there. Don’t make the mistake of trying to learn dozens of tricks at one time. When you’re starting on the road to becoming a professional magician, you must remember that you are only as good as the presentation you can give which means every detail must be perfect. Focus on practicing every minute detail of each effect as you learn them. Once you’ve mastered the techniques, move on to adding more material that compliments the tricks you have mastered and will prove to be enjoyable to an audience. By doing this, you’ll find yourself with an amazing repertoire of perfect tricks after months and years of dedicated practice.

Find your niche As you are practicing, you will find that some tricks come more easily to you and others never feel quite right even after months of practice. Consider the tricks that you find most enjoyable to use in front of others and build your niche around these tricks. The effects that you are most comfortable performing will put on the most entertaining show, so build your specific niche around these tricks, regardless of what you see other magicians doing. Once you have this small niche, do some free shows and low-paid gigs in the area to continue feeling out what branch of magic you can succeed in professionally as you continue your journey.

Perform somewhere While practicing tricks and making friends who you can discuss your performances with is great, there is nothing like actually performing for an audience. It can be terrifying, but the only way to grow as an entertainer is to entertain. Whether your performance goes perfectly or you totally bomb, you will grow as a magician by doing so. Mistakes often teach us more than successes, so don’t be afraid to make them. Once you’ve got a small repertoire of tricks ready, get in front of an audience outside of your own family. This experience will teach you more than practicing in a mirror for weeks on end. Once you finish your performance, step away and take notes on what felt good and what you would change next time. Repeat again (and again, and again).

Even if you cannot perform a certain trick , knowing the method behind it could be useful to you down the road. The Wondermagicfactory has some excellent FREE magic PDF Books for instant download
