This  one  semester  course  focuses  on  the  component    parts  of  medical  terms:  prefixes,  suffixes  and  word  roots.      Students  will  practice   formation,  analysis  and  reconstruction  of  terms,  including    spelling,  definition  and  pronunciation.    Organized  according  to  body  systems,   terms  related  to  anatomy,  diseases  and  disorders,  as  well  as  surgical  and  diagnostic  terms  will  be  explored.     This  course  is  articulated  with  the  state-­‐wide  technical  college  medical  terminology  course.    Students  completing  the  course  with  a  grade   of  B  earn  3  transcripted  credits  from  the  Milwaukee  Area  Technical  College.  

Enduring  Understanding(s):    

  Medicine  has  a  language  of  its  own  with  a  vocabulary  built   from  Greek  and  Latin  word  parts,  eponyms,  acronyms  and   terms  from  modern  language.        

Essential  Questions:  

  How  can  medical  terms  be  built/translated  from  Greek  and  Latin   prefixes,  roots  and  suffixes?      

Standards  (Commission  on  Accreditation  of  Allied  Health  Education  Programs/Medical  Assisting)     Examine  the  basic  structure  of  medical  words.   Identify  medical  terminology  word  building  skills  and  definitions.   Apply  the  use  of  medical  terminology.       Benchmarks  (College-­‐Readiness):     Wisconsin  Technical  College  System  Aligned  Course  –  Medical  Terminology  

Unit  Targets:      

  For  each  of  the  systems  and  topics  listed*  be  able  to:     1. Define  the  anatomical  terms.   2. Define  and  spell  related  word  parts.   3. Build,  analyze,  define,  pronounce  and  spell  disease  and  disorder  terms  that  are  built  from  word  parts.   4. Build,  analyze,  define,  pronounce  and  spell  the  surgical  terms  that  are  built  from  word  parts.   5. Build,  analyze,  define,  pronounce  and  spell  complementary  terms  that  are  built  from  word  parts.   6. Define,  pronounce  and  spell  selected  additional  related  terms  that  are  not  built  from  word  parts.     • Integumentary  System,  Respiratory  System,  Urinary  System,  Male  Reproductive  System,  Female  Reproductive  System,   Obstetrics  &  Neonatology,  Cardiovascular  &  Lymphatic  Systems,  Digestive  System,  The  Eye,  The  Ear,  Musculoskeletal  System,   Nervous  System  and  Common  Behavioral  Health  Terms,  Endocrine  System
