*Hymn of Praise Hark! the Herald Angels Sing UMH #240 Lighting of the Advent Candle—Joy William and Sharon McMillian Last Sunday we lit the candle of Hope, remembering the hope that comes in Jesus Christ. We also lit the candle of Peace, remembering God’s plan for a peaceful world. Today we light the third candle of Advent, the candle of Joy. When the angel Gabriel told Mary a special child would be born to her, she was filled with joy. Just as the birth of Jesus gave great joy to his mother, so his presence in the world brought hope and joy to those who had none before. The light of this candle reminds us that when Jesus is born in us we have joy. Through him, there can be everlasting peace and joy on earth. Let us pray together: Loving God, as we wait in joyful expectation of the One who is coming, shed your light on everything that is filled with darkness. Help us, like Mary, to trust all that you have promised and to find joy in surprising places—even in the midst of apathy or sorrow or uncertainty. Grant us the courage to experience joy in all the ways it comes. Amen. Passing of the Peace Time of Prayer - The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
*Affirmation of Faith (Apostles’ Creed)
UMH #881 I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead: he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayer For Illumination God of all joy, send your Spirit to this place to bless the reading of your word that it may be a lamp to our feet and a light unto our path. Amen. Scripture
