What Would Mark Watney Do? “Remember those old math questions you had in algebra class? Where water is entering a container at a certain rate and leaving at a different rate and you need to figure out when it’ll be empty? Well, that concept is critical to the ‘Mark Watney doesn’t die’ project I’m working on…” Challenge 1: The term sol is used by planetary astronomers to refer to the duration of a solar day on Mars. Mars does not spin on its axis at exactly the same speed as Earth, therefore a Martian solar day, or "sol", is 24 hours, 39 minutes, and 35.244 seconds. When Watney is stranded on Mars, the next Mars mission is scheduled for Sol 1412. For how many [Earth] days does he need to survive until he can be rescued? How many [Earth] years is this? Challenge 2: Watney is stranded with enough food to feed 6 people for 56 days. He can safely ration himself to a ¾ portion per day. For how many days will his food last? He also has some space, dirt, and potatoes that he can plant. In 400 days, he can grow about 150 kilograms of potatoes. They have a nutritional value of about 0.770 calories per gram. Assuming a lean diet of 1500 cal/day, how many more days of food does this potato farming buy Watney? Is is enough to last until rescue?
Challenge 3: In order to get that potato farming going, Watney needs to bring some Martian dirt into his camp (the Hab). He has a surface area of 92 m2 he can use, and needs to cover it to a depth of 10cm. What volume (in m3) does he need? Then to water this soil, Watney needs 40L of water for every m3 of soil. How much water does he need? Challenge 4: To produce enough water, Watney needs to use hydrogen & oxygen. He has a supply of oxygen available to him, but needs to produce hydrogen from hydrazine (N2H4) rocket fuel. He has 292L of hydrazine available. Assuming 90% efficiency in the reaction, how many liters of hydrogen should he be able to produce? N2H4 → N2 + 2H2 With that much hydrogen, how many liters of water should he be able to produce? 2H2 + O2→ 2H2O Is it enough to meet his farming needs (from Challenge 3)? Would Watney be able to carry all 292L of hydrazine? It has a density of 1.021 kg/L. On Earth, a kilogram weighs 2.2lbs, but Mars only has 40% of the gravity of Earth. How much would that 292L weigh on Mars? Challenge 5: This is a visual problem to solve. Get a tangram set from your teacher. The 4 pieces can be put together to create a simple polygon. Figure it out & show your teacher when finished.
