Pickleball is a fun, fast-paced court sport played on a badminton-sized court with a 36 inch high net lowered to 34 inches at the center. Pickleball is based on elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong, making it extremely popular among seniors as it can be less strenuous physically. It is played with a perforated plastic ball similar to a whiffle ball and graphite or composite paddles about twice the size of ping-pong paddles. It can be played indoors or outdoors, is easy for beginners to learn - but can develop into a fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. In addition to being fun, the game has developed a reputation for its friendly and social nature. Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles. No special apparel is needed - just something comfortable and appropriate for a court sport. Equipment is inexpensive and the same court, paddle and ball is used for players aged 8 to 80. Pickleball is taught in school P.E. programs as well as being popular with senior citizens. Tennis, racquetball and ping pong players love the competitive nature of the sport and regularly participate in competition tournaments. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association’s 2015 Participant Report, 2.46 million people in the United States are playing pickleball and there are pickleball facilities located in all 50 states. In March 2014, NBC Nightly News aired a segment on pickleball as “the fastest growing sport in America.”
Pickleball does generate noise, as do any court sports, including basketball and tennis. Sports are frequently collocated – basketball courts near tennis courts, soccer fields near other sports. Pickleball fits into that mold. None of these sports should be located near residences, and typically they are not.
Here in the Charlottesville area, most pickleball is currently played either at the Key Rec Center, a public gymnasium where 3 courts can be set up and pickleball is offered for varying amounts of time 4 days or evenings a week, or ACAC, a private athletic club that sets up one or two courts on their basketball floor in the mornings/afternoons Mon-Sat. At each of these two venues, there are 150 visits per week for the purpose of playing pickleball. Pickleball has outgrown the indoor facilities and at either venue there are frequently 30 or more people waiting for the opportunity to play a game.
Two courts at Pen Park have pickleball court lines. There are approximately 16 visits per week to Pen Park to use these courts. Each tennis court only accommodates one pickleball court, which is an inefficient use of space. Four pickleball courts can be placed in the standard tennis court footprint, resulting in 16 people playing in the same space that 4 people playing doubles tennis would occupy. As there are only two courts at Pen Park with court lines, it is not conducive to have a group get together to play. There are no lines or other special features at Charlottesville High School, but these courts have 40-50 visits per week to play Pickleball. Lines must be chalked onto the courts every time in order to have court boundaries.
