DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY U.S. ARMY JROTC HARRISONBURG HIGH SCHOOL 1001 GARBERS CHURCH ROAD HARRISONBURG, VA 22801
August 1, 2015 Dear Parents, Guardians and Students: I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join the Harrisonburg High School Junior Reserve Officer Training (JROTC) program. The JROTC program at Harrisonburg High School is an “Honor Unit with Distinction”, in the top twenty percent of all units in the nation. JROTC is a cooperative effort between the local school system and the Army in over 1560 locations around the world. JROTC is an elective academic credit program that requires no military obligation. Its purpose is to emphasize citizenship, leadership, individual responsibility and school graduation. Each cadet will be given the opportunity to learn and practice leadership skills; try out for the Drill team, Raider team, and Color Guard (GPA must be 2.0 or better); and participate in physical training and hikes. They can also participate in field trips, present the Nation’s Colors at sporting events and official functions, participate in parades, and improve themselves both physically and academically. Many of our Cadets have earned scholarships to colleges and universities throughout the nation, and appointments to service academies (West Point, the Air Force Academy, and the Naval Academy). The program JROTC utilizes a military structure as a vehicle to teach leadership and responsibility. As such, the students will most likely experience a more structured and disciplined environment than in their other classes. Cadets will be issued uniforms, free of charge, and be required to wear them on Wednesdays, and must maintain proper appearance (cleanliness, haircuts, clean-shaven, etc). Cadets will also have the opportunity to earn awards and ribbons to wear with their uniform. Awards and ribbons are earned for Academic Excellence; participation in parades, JROTC Teams and/or Varsity Sports; Perfect Attendance; and Personal Appearance to name just a few. Please be sure and visit the JROTC table at “fee” days and sign up for the JROTC Booster Club. We have a full schedule beginning August 23rd. I look forward to meeting and working with each of you. Again, I would like to invite you to join this exciting program and welcome you to the 2015-16 school year.
