Speech Language Pathology Many children have problems in making the connection between spoken and written language. There are thinking and language skills that must be mastered before learning to read. To help your child develop these skills, you can: Help your child focus attention on pictures, sights, and sounds. Enjoy books together in a comfortable environment. Sit close together and share your thoughts and feeling about the book you are reading. Use books which ask your child to search for hidden objects, such as the animals in the forest or the birds in the leaves. Encourage pointing to the features of objects, such as “What a big truck! I like big, red trucks.” Do problem-solving of all kinds together. “Does this part of the train track fit to that?”
