Malachi
GOD’S LOVE & WHY WE DIMINISH IT Pastor David Beatty | Sunday, October 1, 2017 Malachi 1:1-5 1 The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi. 2 I have loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob, 3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. 4 Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the Lord hath indignation for ever. 5 And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The Lord will be magnified from the border of Israel.
INTRODUCTION _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ We question God’s love when… 1. We feel defenseless and ___________________________ 2. We experience ___________________________ and pain 3. We feel ________________________ and not in control 4. We think God isn’t living up to His ___________ responsibility
WHY IS THERE SUFFERING? - Because of the fallen state of ___________________ For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. Romans 8:22
- Because of man’s ________________ against God’s law 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Romans 1:20-21
- Because of God’s _________________ and compassion It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23
_____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ GOD DEMONSTRATED HIS LOVE FOR ISRAEL BY 1. Pointing them back to the covenant that was made 2 I have loved you, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the Lord: yet I loved Jacob, 3 And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness. Malachi 1:2-3
2. Illustrating how he fought against their enemies Whereas Edom saith, We are impoverished, but we will return and build the desolate places; thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the Lord hath indignation forever. Malachi 1:4
3. Demonstrating His power outside of Israel And your eyes shall see, and ye shall say, The Lord will be magnified from the border of Israel. Malachi 1:5
TO MAGNIFY GOD’S LOVE IN MY LIFE I MUST REALIZE: 1. GOD ___________ ME BEFORE THE WORLD WAS CREATED According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Ephesians 1:4 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Romans 8:29
_____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 2. GOD___________________ FOR ME EVEN WHEN I’M ALONE He is the Jehovah-Sabaoth: ______________________________ A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. Psalm 68:5 But ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. John 14:17b-18 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. James 1:17
_____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 3. GOD WILL USE MY LIFE AS A ____________________ TO HIM When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. Isaiah 43:2
