WEC Legislative Session Internship Washington Environmental Council is a nonprofit, statewide advocacy organization that has been driving positive change to solve Washington's most critical environmental challenges since 1967. WEC builds power for the environmental movement in Washington. We bring the environmental community together through the Environmental Priorities Coalition. The Environmental Priorities Coalition is a group of over 20 leading nonprofit organizations in Washington State that annually provides the state legislature with a list of “priority” environmental bills that it believes are critical to improving our quality of life. Each year the coalition picks its priorities, and develops a campaign around each one. The Environmental Priorities Coalition has been instrumental in protecting the foundational laws and policies that help keep Washington’s environment healthy including: the State Environmental Policy Act, the State Superfund Law, the Growth Management Act, and the Shoreline Management Act. WEC is looking for two part-time Legislative Session Interns to support our work on the 2015 priorities campaigns. This work will focus on increasing our grassroots lobbing presence on these important environmental priorities through innovative outreach and engagement opportunities. This is a great position for someone who is interested in learning more about environmental advocacy work, the legislative process and building grassroots power for the environment. Job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
Recruit, train and mobilize activists to lobby their elected officials about important environmental priorities. Coordinate volunteer opportunities and outreach events with the public Assist with online communication (Social media, event postings, etc.) Maintain and organize data in organizational database Research and implement innovative outreach techniques to grow our activist base.
Desired Qualifications:
Interest in environmental policy or politics Strong history of teamwork Independent self-starter Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments Strong writing and research skills Strong interpersonal skills Ability to multi-task Experience with or a strong desire to learn more about event planning, the legislative process, and Washington State politics.
This internship requires a commitment of 10-15 hours/ week from January 4th through June 19th. This is an unpaid internship that can count as course credit if approved by your institution.
