Position Announcement: WDFW Scientific Technician for steelhead research in the Columbia River Gorge WDFW will be hiring 1 non-‐permanent full-‐time Scientific Technician 2 position to work on steelhead studies in the Columbia River Gorge. The term of the position will run from July 7, 2014 through approximately the end of December, 2014. The duty station for this position is the WDFW field office in Stevenson, WA. This position will assist the project field lead in the implementation of monitoring and evaluation studies focused on adult steelhead. Specific duties include: • • • •
Operation of an adult fishway trap at Shipherd Falls on the Wind River Hook and line angling for adult steelhead as part of a hooking mortality study in the Wind River Implementing steelhead creel and effort surveys on Columbia Gorge tributaries Participating in snorkel surveys used to complete mark-‐resight estimates of adult steelhead abundance
Specific skills/experiences needed to accomplish these tasks are good physical condition, ability to swim and obtain a WDFW snorkeling certification, high level experience and skill angling for steelhead in a river environment, fish identification and handling and knowledge and conducting creel surveys. Experience with field data collection and electronic data entry (spreadsheets and databases) is a must. Experience implanting PIT and Floy tags in adult salmonids is desirable but not required. Working Conditions Roughly 90% of work will be conducted in the field and the work schedule is 40 hours per week including some weekend, evening and holiday work. Flexible hours are required to address the changing conditions, related to weather, stream flow and fish numbers. Work hours vary daily and can be very long during periods of inclement weather and high stream flows. Potentially dangerous conditions may exist, including high and swift water, and slippery conditions. Qualified candidates must be able to swim and be able to obtain a WDFW snorkeling certification by completing training and passing an in-‐water exam. Work often includes donning dry suits, chest waders, and rain gear for extended periods of time. Use of hand and power tools is required to install and maintain fish traps. Ability to lift and carry loads and hike distances up to five miles in difficult conditions is required.
