Wilson Central High School’s mission is to prepare students to become successful and productive citizens by providing educational opportunities and experiences in a venue Where Challenge Heightens Success. School Overview Wilson Central High School is a public high school that opened in 2001 with an addition being completed in 2007. The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (AdvancED) and the Tennessee Department of Education. We have a total of 156 faculty and staff. The enrollment in grades 9-12 is 1885 students with 456 seniors. Our student population is <1% American Indian/Alaskan Native, 2% Asian, 6% Hispanic, 8% Black/African American, 82% white, 12% students with learning differences, 1.6% English language learners and 21% economically disadvantaged students. The 2014-2015 graduation rate was 94.7%, and the attendance rate was 94.7%. Tennessee participates in statewide ACT testing for all juniors. The spring 2016 average ACT composite for juniors was 20.3.

Class of 2016 Data The class of 2016 had 390 graduates. Post high school plans included the following: 84% college (56% four year college and 28% two year college or technical school), 2% military, 3% workforce, and 11% unknown/undecided. The class earned $9.1 million in scholarships and had an average weighted GPA of 3.253. The top 10% of students in the class earned a weighted GPA of 4.179 or above. Nine graduates earned an ACT composite of 30 or above. Tennessee Promise students comprised 55% of the graduating class. The graduating class average ACT composite was 19.7. Curriculum Since opening, the school operated on a 4 x 4 block schedule with four classes each semester and the opportunity to earn eight credits a year. In 2014-2015, the school changed to a seven period day schedule with classes being 48 to 50 minutes in length but returned to a 4x4 block schedule in 2015-2016. Students may earn up to eight credits each year. Each course counts one full credit except for some social studies courses which are a ½ credit. We offer an extended lunch period of 66 minutes two days a week where students may elect to or be assigned to attend tutoring Advanced Placement (AP) courses offered: Studio Art, Music Theory, Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, Calculus AB and BC, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, US Government and Politics, Comparative Government and Politics, US History, World History, Human Geography, Psychology, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics. In May 2016, 306 AP exams were taken with 51% resulting in scores of 3 or above.

A total of 23 honors courses are offered at our school in the subject areas of English, math, science, social studies, foreign language, agriculture, business, drafting, marketing, health science, and STEM. In 2016-2017, the school started offering a total of seven Pre-Advanced Placement level courses which replaced the honors level courses in those core subjects of English, math, science, and social studies. Dual enrollment courses are offered through Cumberland University and Volunteer State Community College to juniors and seniors who meet certain grade and ACT score requirements. In 2016-2017, students may also choose courses at Middle Tennessee State University and Motlow State Community College. Students earn both high school and college credit. Dual credit courses are taught by high school faculty. Students take a challenge exam at the end of the course to earn college credit through the colleges specified in the state articulation agreement. Grade Point Average and Ranking: Class of 2017 Dual Enrollment, Honors and Pre-Advanced Placement Courses--Three points added to final semester average and 0.5 quality points in calculation of the GPA if the weighted grade average is an 85 or above. AP Courses--Five points added to the final semester average and 1.0 quality points in calculation of the GPA if the weighted grade average is an 85 or above. Student transcripts show a weighted and unweighted GPA. The GPA is figured by adding the quality points earned in all courses and dividing by the total attempted credits. Weighted GPA is used for ranking purposes, and seniors are ranked through the last semester of their senior year.
