Challenging Kids Please! Okay! La! La!
Face it … all we really want is to ask a Beloved Rascal to do something and hear her say, “Okay!”
Coach B
Step 1 Explain that the administration wants you to work on your manners … and you’d like your students’ help.
Step 2: Say, “If I ask you do something and remember to say ‘Please!’ … you say, ‘Okay!’
Step 3: Add, “If I forget to say ‘Please’ … then you say “La! La! La!”
Dede BlueBird
Step 4: Then practice with a few kids … ask them to sit up straight … sometimes you say “Please” … and they respond “Okay!” sometimes you “forget” and they say “La! La!” … then you “remember” and they say “Okay!” Dede BlueBird
Step 5: During the day “forget” to use “Please” with your challenging kid … the child says “La! La! La!” then “remember” to say “Please” and the student says “Okay!”
The whole time they are saying “La! La!” they think they are getting away with something … but in fact they are INSIDE YOUR SYSTEM!… and then they end up with “Okay!” Biffy BlueBird
Getting a Beloved Rascal to say “Okay,” even if it takes a bit of work is TEACHING HEAVEN!
Instead of hassling with Rascals … ask them to do something, “forget” the “Please” … and then go to “Please” and delight in the “Okay!”
The more often you review the PleaseOkay-La-La response … the fewer times you will have to “forget” the “Please” … say, “Juan … (dramatic pause as if you are remembering) … PLEASE read your book.”
When you see improvement, reward students with one or more Star Lines on the Super Improvers Team.
