Water Treatment Solutions Delivering Cost-Effective, Custom Water Treatment Solutions Across the Globe

Drinking Water Treatment RWL Water provides both standard and custom-designed water treatment solutions that can reliably deliver high-quality, safe water to government entities and municipalities in densely populated areas and remote communities. We are committed to ensuring safe, dependable, and affordable drinking water, supported by decades of hands-on experience at hundreds of water treatment facilities around the world. We pay particular attention to capital and operating cost-effectiveness and environmental impact. Depending on its end use, water from wells, rivers, lakes, and other sources requires a variety of purification processes, which can include the following:        

Clarification and purification Softening and hardness treatment Specific treatments (removal of arsenic, uranium, nitrates, endocrine disruptors, total organic carbon, etc.) Disinfection Desalination Sludge treatment Water treatment chemicals Mobile water treatment

All the plants and project solutions proposed by RWL Water are fully automated and can be controlled by local or remote-control systems.

Biological Potabilization We are experts at implementing biological treatments for potabilization whenever possible. Biological treatments use particular families of nonpathogenic microorganisms in the abatement of methane, ammonia, iron, and manganese in the water, using oxygen instead of chlorine or other chemical oxidizing reagents. Biological processes have zero environmental impact and low operating costs, and do not produce harmful byproducts such as THMs (trihalomethanes). Traditional treatment uses chlorine-based oxidizers, followed by sand filtration. This process, however, can lead to the formation of carcinogenic chlorine derivatives. In order to separate these substances, costly activated carbon filtering systems must be applied. Biological potabilization, on the other hand, does not produce any undesired substances and is a much simpler treatment. We have provided this solution to hundreds of customers around the world.

Potabilization With Arsenic Removal RWL Water is also a leader in the use of resin processes for the removal of specific pollutants, including arsenic, boron, chlorides, and metals. New arsenic limits in drinking water are set to 10 µg/l. Much of the well water in the world has arsenic concentrations well above this limit, and therefore must be treated. RWL Water proposes an innovative selective resin process, which, unlike the methods proposed by our competitors, has the advantage of being regenerable. This results in very high abatement performance and much lower operating cost than traditional arsenic removal methods.

Industrial Water and Demineralization with Ionic Exchange Resins Water can be processed to obtain demineralized or ultrapure water, suitable for industrial applications such as boiler feeds or cooling towers, or any use specific to the client production process. RWL Water has more than 30 years of experience in developing solutions to produce highly dependable, fit-for-purpose industrial water. These include resin demineralization solutions for industrial applications. We were among the first to apply the “fluidized bed” system (Bayer® patent) in Italy.

RWL Water has acquired great expertise and experience in the construction of highly dependable demineralization plants, which are designed to operate for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, without unscheduled stops.

Membrane Treatment Solutions RWL Water technologies include membrane treatment solutions for any type of water applications. We have decades of experience working with membrane manufacturers to provide ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis solutions to clients around the world.

Water Treatment Case Studies 

One of the world’s largest iron ore mining projects, located in Western Australia, was developed to meet the growing need of the global steel industry. RWL Water designed, manufactured, supplied, constructed, and commissioned a water treatment plant for the new power station, supplying its various water requirements. The system is fed by desalinated seawater from the plant, and water is further treated to meet the stringent quality requirements of the power station, using the following processes and equipment:

First-pass RO membranes for supply of permeate for cooling and other uses. Capacity: 2 x 1,000 m3/day o Second-pass RO and EDI demineralization for supply of water to high-pressure steam boilers. Capacity: 2 x 450 m3/day o Conditioning of RO permeate for potable use according to Australian standards, including remineralization by calcite filters and disinfection. Capacity: 120 m3/day o

A large Israeli Styrofoam manufacturer wanted to save energy costs by reducing boiler blowdown. The company decided to treat the boiler feed water with reverse osmosis membrane technology. RWL Water installed a treatment system, implementing combined UF and RO membrane technology with a capacity of 13 m3/hr. In addition to saving energy costs, boiler maintenance costs are reduced as a result of the use of the high-quality RO permeate. The system included the following treatment stages: Mechanical screen filtration — removal of large solids Ultrafiltration membranes — removal of residual solids and turbidity, organic and colloidal material, and bacteria and viruses Activated carbon filtration — dechlorination, removal of residual organic materials, and SDI reduction Chemical pretreatment, including pH adjustment and antiscalant dosing 5 micron cartridge filtration Reverse osmosis membranes — salt removal, and reduction of TDS and conductivity The treated water is stored in a 40 m3 tank — installed by RWL Water — for feed-upon-demand to the steam boiler. The system is operating smoothly, providing the customer with a significant reduction in energy costs.

The Episkopi Desalination Plant in Limassol, Cyprus, was designed to provide the population with a reliable supply of potable water. RWL Water manufactured, installed, and commissioned the main process equipment of the plant. The treatment process provided by RWL Water uses pretreatment by ultrafiltration membranes, and seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) with energy recovery. The Episkopi plant offers an actual capacity of 50,000 m3/day of drinking water for Limassol residents. The system description includes: o Pretreatment by ultrafiltration membranes o Seawater reverse osmosis with energy recovery o Remineralization

RWL Water supplied a two-stage, fully automatic arsenic removal plant to the Borgo Balsugana municipality in Trento, Italy. In the treatment process, the resins are filled with iron hydroxide, which absorbs the oxidized arsenic. The absorption capacity of the resins depends on the arsenic concentration in the polluted water and the presence of interfering ions such as phosphates and silica. The inlet of arsenic in this case is 50 µg/L. The output is less than 2 µg/L and the treatment plant and process successfully produce 75 m3/hour of drinking water for Trento.
