Getting more done

Achieving desired results

• To improve service to visitors at the Minnesota State Capitol, Guest Services staff worked with a small team of volunteers to connect groups with their tour guides and to facilitate groups’ movement on summer tours. These efforts were so successful that the team has been expanded to help year-round.

• A Heritage Preservation intern digitized zooarchaeology reports and created map layers using ArcGIS to provide researchers with access to information on the location of animal remains buried throughout the state.

Making MNHS a great place to volunteer

• To improve data-driven decision making, a team of History Center exit survey volunteers collected information from guests. • A volunteer in Facilities and Risk Management shared his skills in title research and documentation for MNHS properties throughout Minnesota. • Two college interns significantly contributed to research for a 2019 exhibit on First Avenue and 7th Street Entry. • For every eight minutes of staff time invested, one hour of volunteer service is received.

Volunteers allow me to complete a project I did not have time for. —MNHS STAFF

• Minnesota Gold Star Roll Records are now searchable on the MNHS website, thanks to the completion of a new processing project tackled by four volunteers. • A new team of 18 volunteers at Oliver Kelley Farm supported programs and visitors. Volunteers now serve as school programs greeters, learning kitchen assistants, golf cart drivers, and visitor services specialists. Additional MNHS volunteers supplemented this team to fill 50 shifts for grand opening activities. • A volunteer with photography expertise scanned 350 uncatalogued, 8 x 10, Norton & Peel images from the early 1960s to prepare them for addition to MNHS Collections Online. • Volunteers delivered a return on investment of $3.63:1. The return for skills-based volunteers was even higher at $5.51:1. • 97% of staff agreed that skills-based volunteers enhanced their ability to contribute to MNHS’s strategic initiatives and organizational goals.

What I like best about volunteering at MNHS is that I have challenging assignments. —VOLUNTEER

EFFICIENCY

• Two volunteers completed 11 years of work transcribing Governor Alexander Ramsey’s journals to make the information available for program development. • An intern worked with high school students on a Native American photography project that became an exhibit. She continued with MNHS as a National Register of Historic Places Research Fellow. • 98% of staff rate their experience working with volunteers as favorable. • 97% of volunteers feel their MNHS experience is meaningful.

What I like best about volunteering at the Minnesota Historical Society is that the staff makes me feel like I’m part of the organization. —VOLUNTEER
