Spring 2014

FROM THE DIRECTOR: The KDCCC, a mission outreach of the First Congregational Church, has completed its 23rd year of providing free part-time child care to lowincome families in the greater Kalamazoo area.

2013 recap:

In 2013 KDCCC served 161 families and 214 children. We served 23 more new families than in 2012. We continue to give a significant number of our families time to look for employment (308 times) and for permanent housing (63 times). I am happy to report that we were again able to make our budget for 2013. We couldn’t have done it without the support from the First Congregational Church, grants, local foundations and many wonderful individual contributors. Each year seems to be a bigger challenge, but we are committed to our mission and to provide our service to as many low-income families as we are able. We expanded our direct mail appeal by sending out 1,600 letters in 2013 to new prospects. We promoted the use of PayPal for contributions and received several toward the end of the year. We added a video to our website and are ready to launch our first e-mail newsletter beginning with this one. When KDCCC first started, families had to be directly referred to us through their case worker. We changed that rule after only a short time There are many lowincome families in our city who don’t work directly with a caseworker, but still have a sincere need for drop-in child care. These are the families who are looking for employment and need to leave their children somewhere while they fill out paper work or have interviews. These are also the families who need to find permanent housing and find it difficult to do this with young children in tow. Low-income families often have many appointments and other stresses specific to their economic status. And, of course, all young parents, especially lower income parents, need a break now and then from the constant care of their children. We are so happy that we are able, through our generous supporters, to relieve some of their stresses. KDCCC is still looking for 2-3 new board members. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30. Please contact us if you are interested in joining our team.

2014 Parent Stories: February 7: A 3 year old girl comes to KDCCC about once a week. She is learning English as a second language and her parents bring her to KDCCC to give her more exposure to English and other children. February 11: A Howard Tejchma Bronson—Training Coordinator mother brought her infant and toddler to KDCCC so that she could go to work. She First Congregational Church Member cleans houses and KDCCC’s hours gives her just enough time to get her work done. February 14: A mother with 4 children under the age of 5 dropped off her children to get a short break. February 20: A mom brings her 2 year old daughter to KDCCC once or twice a week while she attends classes at KVCC. Jim Smith Attorney at Law, Retired First Congregational Church Member

Annual Mail Appeal/Phone-a-thon!! Spring will be here soon—the budding of the flowers, the singing of the birds, the ringing of the phones. That’s right, KDCCC’s annual Mail Appeal/Phone-a-thon is coming up in May. This is a favorite time of year for the Center, because it is our chance to personally thank YOU, our generous friends and contributors, for your support. Without you, there would be no Kalamazoo Drop-In Child Care Center. There would be no free, high-quality child care center in Kalamazoo for parents to bring their children while they went to work or school, looked for employment or housing, or got a break from the often stressful demands of raising young children. Your kindness truly makes a difference in the lives of so many children and parents. Thank you very much. During our phone-a-thon, we do our best to be respectful of your time. If you would prefer to receive only the mailing and not a phone call, please either call us (382-3640) or email us ([email protected]) to let us know. Thank you.

How does my donation help KDCCC??

Choosing to support an organization is an important decision. You are putting your faith in that organization to use your money wisely. At KDCCC every dollar is used to create and maintain a free, high-quality child care center for low-income families and your money makes a real impact on so many people. Your donation helps KDCCC to...

...provide a safe, educationally-rich environment for children to learn and play.

...give parents the gift of time to search for employment or housing, attend school, go to important appointments, and have much-needed respite from the demands of parenting. ...manage our budget so that we can purchase healthy lunch and snack items not supplemented by Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes, plus art and educational supplies to enhance our learning activities.

...ensure that KDCCC can employ and provide continuing education for caring, well-trained early childhood educators. The staff also mentors our valuable volunteers and provides them with opportunities to interact with young children in positive ways.

2013 Volunteer Statistics

"The question is not 'Can you make a difference?' You already do make a difference. It's just a matter of what kind of a difference you want to make, during your life on this planet."

KDCCC was fortunate to have had 118 Volunteers who volunteered a total of 7,582 hours last year!

~ Mary Cowhey

THANK YOU KDCCC VOLUNTEERS!

We would like to thank WMU Students, Stephani Smith (Family Studies), Meg Erridge (Family Studies), Sarah Gregoire (Family and Child Development) and Jenny Brunnell (Social Work). They are all in the process of completing their Field Experience here at the Center. They have been such a great help this semester and we trust they have learned many things that they can take with them into their future professional careers. Mentoring students is an important part of what we do here at KDCCC!

Our Volunteers are from various programs (PATH, YOU, AARP, Senior Services (RSVP), as well as from the colleges and around the community.

Congratulations PNC Bank on the 10th Anniversary of your Grow Up Great Program! Not only does PNC send wonderful volunteers to help us, they also award us grants after so many hours are reached. This year they are generously doubling the grant amounts we will receive, in celebration of their Anniversary.

Thank you PNC!!!

Want to know a way to easily support KDCCC? You can give through something as routine as doing your grocery shopping! We are now able to raise funds through the eScrip program at Harding’s. Simply pick up a card here at the Center or get one at your local Harding’s. It can quickly be activated by phone or email. KDCCC’s Group ID Number is 500044704, or you can search for us by name. KDCCC will receive a percentage of your purchases if your card is linked to the Center. We also can earn funds by recycling your empty inkjet/laser printer cartridges, mobile phones, digital cameras, laptops, GPS devices and MP3 players.

As always, thank you for your generous support of the Center! If you would like to receive KDCCC newsletters through e-mail please let us know. Our e-mail is: [email protected].
