Dr. Joyce Wilson Chronicled 20th Century Changes to Bellevue College Campus One of the most entertaining sessions of the March in-service day shared by the Bellevue University Library staff occurred when long-time art professor, Dr. Joyce Wilson, regaled the staff with her experiences compiling the history of the first forty years of our institution. Shortly after the year 2000, she was approached with the task of writing this chronicle, which she titled A History of Bellevue University: The First Forty Years (1966 – 2006). Dr. Wilson was a natural choice, as she had been a faculty member here since 1968. During her research, in addition to combing the Bellevue Leader for source material, she put out an all-campus call to her colleagues. Many faculty, staff, and current and former Board of Directors members responded, and relics, photos, and print material kept arriving at her door. She also gathered oral statements from early board members and other professors who had been associated with Bellevue College/Bellevue University for decades. Once this data was gathered, the written/visual history began to take shape. Dr. Wilson was teaching seven courses at the time, therefore, the afternoons and evenings were the best time for her to work on the book. Of the many aspects of her book, one of the most striking is how the Bellevue College campus buildings changed during its first forty years. In the turbulent era of the mid-1960s, former World War II aviator Bill Brooks became a chief advocate and supporter of the idea to offer post-secondary education in Bellevue. During that decade, Brooks was a member of the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce and also a student at Omaha University (now UNO). Initially, a junior college was investigated, but support from the officials of Offutt Air Force base encouraged the founders to request permission for a four-year institution. On November 26, 1965, Bellevue College was incorporated and chartered as a four-year institution by the State of Nebraska. (p. 22) With the charter in hand, the search began for land and buildings. Real estate partners R. Joe Dennis and F. Hoyte Freeman were instrumental in suggesting the property on the corner of Galvin Road and Harvell Road. At the time, a vacant building owned by the Bellevue Industrial Foundation was on that property (p.35), a farm, and a branch of Millard Lumber. R. Joe Dennis was president of the Bellevue Industrial Foundation in the mid-1960s, and suggested that the building serve as the temporary initial home of Bellevue College. It served as the only edifice on campus until the fall of 1968, and included faculty and administrative offices, nine classrooms, a student lounge, and the library. The building was transformed into the Durham Administration Center with a total renovation that was completed in 1994. A Quonset hut was transported from Fremont in 1968 to become the art studio, and remained in use until the Art department moved into the Humanities Center in 1993. In 1969, a pre-fabricated building became the first Bellevue College gym (p. 80). An addition was built with a major contribution from the Lozier family in 1979, and it was renamed the Gordon Lozier Physical Health Center. (p.116-117). In 2003, the gym was significantly renovated and renamed the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center (p. 278). In 1971, the initial Student Union was built and named for history professor Dr. J.R. Johnson (p.155). The Richard D. Winchell Student Center (p.178-183) was dedicated in December, 1986. It was extensively renovated and renamed the Margre H. Durham Student Center in 2004 (p. 237, 280). Continued on next page...

MORE THAN BOOKS

Dr. Wilson’s book is available in print format in our Special Collection and digitally in the Archives collection.

The F. Hoyte Freeman Library moved from the initial 1966 building into its own space in 1974. In December 1983, a library addition named for Emma Lozier (one of the chief contributors) doubled the size of the Freeman Library (p.145-147). After extensive renovation, partially funded by the Dennis family, the new Library was reopened in September, 2002 (p. 281282). In 1978, the former Millard Lumber office was purchased, renovated, and became the A.C. Nelsen Science building in early 1979 (p. 209,132). It was totally renovated and renamed the A.C. Nelsen Technology Center in 1993; another renovation

and new name occurred in 1999, when 12,000 square feet were added and the building became the Riley Technology Center (p.209, 235). In 1981, the Gilbert M. and Martha H. Hitchcock Humanities Center was built for classrooms and offices. (p.147153); an addition was added in 1 9 9 1 ; th e C e n te r w a s renovated in 2005 (p. 283). In addition to a print copy that is held in the Bellevue University Library archives, Dr. Wilson’s treasure trove of facts and photos is also available online at: http:// bellevueulibrary.cdmhost.com/ cdm/compoundobject/ collection/p16250coll1/ id/408/rec/6y.cdmhost.com/ cdm/compoundobject/

collection/p16250coll1/ id/408/rec/6. The page numbers in this article are those that contain photos of the campus buildings as they appeared before the year 2000. Those interested in discovering Bellevue College/ Bellevue University’s heritage may want to begin an exploration of A History of Bellevue University: The First Forty Years (1966 – 2006) by comparing the aerial view of the campus in the 1970s on page 131 with the one from 2000 on page 239. Once that piques your interest, begin on page 18 and savor a highly enjoyable and informative trip through the years.

Who’s Who? The library recently celebrated a retirement (see Bulletin Board ) with a promotion. So, while Mary Barrett may not be new to the library, she was promoted to the position of Reference Support Specialist and it is time you get to know her better… Mary began working in the Library on November 2, 2011, as a part-time

circulation assistant. She was working on her Masters of Library and Information Science degree at the time. Mary graduated in the spring of 2012, and continued to work in the library while also working at various other positions outside of Bellevue University. Mary was planning on moving to China this fall to teach English as a Second Language when this opportunity arose. Needless to say, she

preferred to stay and we are very happy Mary made that decision. When Mary is not working, she enjoys reading, learning languages, and singing. Now that you have been re-introduced to Mary, please stop by the library to meet her as she is sure to greet you with a smile…

“STATISTA, IN FACT, GIVES YOU MUCH

Database Data Finding statistics can be tedious and frustrating, but Statista, a new library database, takes the pain out of it. With 1,000,000 continuously updated statistics from over 600 areas, you are sure to find what you need. Statista draws from all manner of sources, including public, private, and government, and delivers all types of data. Statista, in fact, gives you much more than raw statistics; it also provides forecasts, trends, studies, country profiles, and industry reports. A bonus feature is the Infographic which presents data on complex subjects in an engaging visual way. In addition, over 1000 dossiers present a thorough overview of specific topics, as seen through charts and graphs covering every conceivable aspect of that topic. All this disparate data is then integrated to be accessible from a single portal.

MORE THAN RAW You can start with the search box or browse the categories listed across the top of the page. A warning though, you may get distracted along the way, as the homepage tempts you to take a peek at popular and recent statistics, such as the so called Big Mac Index (yes as in burgers!). Once you start down that path, you are likely to find yourself curious about other random statistics, for example, Super Bowl viewership over the years, or Twitter accounts with the most followers, or number of apps available in leading app stores…but back to reality and the statistics you really need. Most likely you are looking for some type of business related data; chances are Statista has it! Your initial search will bring you to a specialized page that provides a starting point for additional searches. For example, type in

“social media marketing” and it will find hundreds of related results that include not only charts and graphs, but also studies, dossiers, industry reports, and infographics. Scroll through the many results listed, or use one of the options provided to narrow them down to a more manageable and focused amount. Once you have found what you are looking for, Statista offers several ways to display the data and several file formats for incorporating it into reports and presentations. Information about the sources is provided, as well as embed codes, if needed, and citations. The uses for Statista are as varied as the information itself and, regardless of how you approach it, statistics have never been so easy! Look for Statista on the A-Z Database List under Find on the library homepage.

At the age of 21, Hawking was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, which slowly weakens his muscles, affecting his ability to speak, move, and even breathe. All of this happens as Hawking is

beginning his doctoral thesis on the nature of time and the presence of black holes at the beginning of the universe. Throughout the film, Eddie Redmayne’s acting capability shines as he shows the slow, brutal degradation of Hawking as he rises to infamy and is lauded as one of the greatest minds of the modern world. In general, the film is wonderful semi-fictional biographical film that gives us a window into the personal life of a man who was very private. We see Hawking’s children born and grow as personal strife and physical

ailments begin to unwind Hawking’s personal life. Celebrate the life of Stephen Hawking with this film, as well as many other materials about his life and his theories, by checking out ma teria ls from ou r circulation desk or accessing them online through our website, library.bellevue.edu. that worked away in the mines for the family. In looking at these different aspects, Bailey is able to focus on many different stories that demonstrate what life was like for both the Fitzwilliam family and their workers. Stories such as the allegation that the 7th Earl, Fitzwilliam, was a changeling and not actually the true son, or how the story of the Fitzwilliam family ended with the tragic deaths of the 8th Earl Fitzwilliam and his mistress Kathleen “Kick” Kennedy, the sister of JFK, in a plane crash. Contained in this book is a large amount of worthwhile information and interesting facts that pertain to the state of affairs in and around the Wentworth house and its estate. Throughout the book, Bailey is able to show two things. First, she is able to accurately recount what brought about the virtual

HISTORY OF THE

Catherine Bailey’s book, Black Diamonds, opens with the funeral of William the 6th, Earl of Fitzwilliam. The author uses this as a starting point to not only look into the lives of the aristocrats, but also as a way to focus on the intermingling lives of the aristocrats and the working class. She uses different historical factors such as class differences, the effects of two world wars on England, and how the labor government effectively brought about the end of one of the richest aristocratic families in English history. She uses this downfall to help readers better understand the history of the coal industry in England. Bailey’s book discusses many different aspects of life, from social to economical. She focuses on both the lives of the Fitzwilliam’s family, as well as, the lives of the poor laborers

end of two classes in England, the lower coal workers and the very upper aristocrats, and second, she was able to demonstrate how much the lives of the Fitzwilliam’s depended on their workers. Finally, Bailey’s book does a wonderful job explaining how the lives of the aristocratic families, such as the Fitzwilliam’s, were affected by the working class and how the fall of one due to the creation of the steam engine brought about the fall of the other. Bailey’s book was a wonderful read that gave the reader a look into a part of society very few had access to, yet, it also showed how two classes who seemed to have no connection at all were dependent upon each other to survive. The book can be found in the general collection at the Bellevue University Library and can be checked out for 21 days.

JOURNAL REVIEW: American Art

Journal, American Art

American Art was created in 1987, and it has been a key resource for museumgoers, collectors, and scholars who want to develop their understanding of the nation’s art and culture. American Art is a peer-reviewed, scholarly journal that contains all facets of the country’s visual heritage from colonial to contemporary times. There are at least three sections to each journal issue: “Feature Articles,” “About the

Authors” and “New Perspectives.” They also have a fourth section called, “Commentaries,” which discusses a type or piece of artwork. At least once a year, they will have a section called, “Appreciations,” which takes the place of “Commentaries.” This section highlights the life of an artist who died that year. Another great feature is that each article comes with reference notes.

The Bellevue University Library has American Art in print from 2006 to the present. It is published in March, July, and November, by the University of Chicago Press in association with the Smithsonian American Art Museum. You can find it in the southeast corner in the periodical section of the library.

Volume 19, Number 3 Summer 2016 Tech Talk Hello, I’m Pam Fanelli and I am happy to introduce myself as the new Technical Services Librarian at Bellevue University Library. With National Library Week recently behind us, I am still dwelling on the celebration’s unifying theme of “Libraries Transform.” This year so far has been particularly transformational for me, as I left my adopted home state of Wyoming for a fresh start here at Bellevue University. I started my library career at Albany County Public Library in Laramie, Wyoming, in 2010, working as a circulation clerk while I finished my Bachelor’s degree in Art Education. After a rewarding but exhausting stint of substitute teaching, I decided to turn the library side job into my primary focus, trying on a variety of positions at the public library until finally settling into a fulltime Catalog Specialist position. I added on another part-time job in 2014, as a cataloger at the University of Wyoming’s Toppan Rare Books Library, shortly after earning my MLIS degree from Kent State University’s online program. By the end of 2015, I was itching to take the next step of my transformation into a librarian. I began that new phase here at Bellevue in January of this year. As Technical Services Lib ra rian , ma ny o f my responsibilities revolve around our library catalog: the vast database of records that represent the holdings of our library collection. Our catalog and its thousands of records rely on description frameworks, controlled vocabularies, and encoding standards to make

holdings discoverable to library users. One of those controlled vocabularies is the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Originating over a hundred years ago as the Library of Congress’s index to subjects in its own catalog, the LCSH has since seen widespread use in bibliographic records in the US and around the world.1 By using a standard vocabulary of descriptive terms, catalogers aim to control the wide variances in natural language to make materials on the same subject more reliably discoverable. However, a century does not pass without huge changes in culture, language, and knowledge. The LCSH has also transformed. After expanding to six enormous crimson-bound volumes and over 35 print editions, the LCSH now exists in its 38th edition as an online, freely downloadable publication2 and as a database. Many have argued, however, that the LCSH has not changed enough, especially when it comes to apparent bias and inaccuracies in the language. In 2014, Dartmouth College petitioned the Library of Congress to change the heading Illegal aliens to Undocumented immigrants. 3 The previous year, the AP Stylebook announced that the term ‘illegal’ would no longer be sanctioned to label a person.4 The Library of Congress this March announced that the subject heading Illegal aliens would be cancelled and replaced with the terms Noncitizens and Unauthorized immigration.5 As we come to terms with the marginalizing and

dehumanizing effe cts o f describing a group of people as “illegal” and “alien,” we must be willing to change the vocabulary to reduce bias and more accurately describe subjects. At the same time, protecting the standardized nature of the vocabulary is crucial to maintaining bibliographic control. Once changes to the LCSH are made, each library utilizing the changed LCSH terms in its catalog records must update those records to stay current. For our library, this involves an ongoing process of maintaining authority records in our catalog. Authority records represent the authorized and controlled terms and names used in our bibliographic records. Our catalog’s authority records help us to link items with the same authorized terms together. When you search our online catalog for an item in our library, take a look at the information page of your chosen title. You may notice hyperlinked subject terms at the bottom of the title’s description. By clicking on these links, you can discover other materials that share the same subject terms, thanks in large part to those authority records. Shortly after the change is officially implemented in May of this year, you might notice Noncitizens and U na u t ho r iz e d im m ig ra t io n replacing Illegal aliens in the hyperlinked terms of catalog records for materials on this topic. This is just one of the many subtle transformations occurring all the time that usually fly under the radar for most catalog users, though it represents larger changes in

The presentation took place on Wednesday April 13, 2016, during the Open House celebration, however, she could not attend the event and it was presented to her later.
