VISION SCREENING Why do you have your eyes checked?
What is the Snellen chart? The Snellen chart has 11 lines of letters. The top of the chart is the biggest with just one letter and the bottom has a row of the smallest letters. Try to read the smallest one you can!
Vision screenings help keep your eyes healthy! Eye exams check whether or not eyeglasses or contact lenses are needed to make it easier for you to see.
Nearsighted: this means you can see things up close really well, but it may be harder to see things far away.
What do you do? 1. You will stand 20 feet from a chart called the “Snellen chart” 2. Cover one eye with a piece of paper 3. Read the smallest line of letters that you can from the chart 4. You will then switch and cover the other eye and read from the same chart
Farsighted: this means that you can see things far away really well, but it may be harder to see things up close.
When you should have your vision checked: It is important to get your eyes checked every one to two years even if you aren’t having any problems with your vision. Otherwise, schedule eye exams based on the advice of your eye doctor.
Have your eyes checked more often if you: Wear glasses or contact lenses You notice your vision changing Have a family history of eye disease Have a medical conditions that require you to get your eyes checked more often
Dos and Don’ts DO -DO stand straight with your head facing forward -DO bring your glasses or contacts to the exam if you have them -DO cover one eye entirely with the card -DO read the smallest row of letters that you can DON’T -DON’T squint -DON’T strain your eyes -DON’T lean forward or backward -DON’T read the lines with both eyes
What To Expect Q&A: Q: Will it hurt? A: No, not at all! Nothing is going to touch your eyes! Q: What if I can’t read the smallest line? A: That is totally okay! Just read what you can! Q: Can I fail the eye exam? A: No, the eye screening does not pass or fail you, it just checks to see if you may need your vision further evaluated for glasses or contacts to help you see better. Q: Will both my eyes be able to read the same line? A: Maybe! However, many people can see further with one eye than the other. It is not uncommon to be able to read a smaller line with one eye.
