We had a great turnout for the Friday Night Ride 7 June. It was great to see some new prospective members: Arpad and Irene out to join us. We went through Cadboro Bay, Cordova Bay, through the peninsula farm lands and Sydney all the way out to Lands End road before turning back north taking West Saanich Road to the Royal Oak Tim Hortons. Tiffany met us at the Millstream Tim Hortons to see us off, and Gerry and Sue met up with us at the Royal Oak Tim Hortons to have coffee with us even though they couldn’t make the ride. What camaraderie! Friday 14 June was another great Friday Night Ride. Tom led a huge pack of Goldwings (and one Victory) through the back roads of Metchosin and Sooke, ending up at the Pedder Bay Marina Campground where Tiffany and Mike hosted us at their travel trailer with coffee, tea, pop, a huge assortment of baked goods and fruit. Much better than anything Timmies has ever provided. Speaking of Timmies, this was the first time we met out our new Friday Night Meeting location (The West Shore Mall Tim Hortons).

Annual Bug Run & BBQ

Friday Night Ride 21 June another prospective new member: Franco joined us. He has a great looking home built tear drop trailer for sale. We went for a great ride through Munns Rd, Millstream Lake Rd, West Saanich Rd, Ardmore Drive, East Saanich Rd and Oldfield Rd, ending up at our usual Tim Hortons (Royal Oak) for more coffee and socializing. The Market Ride to Duncan 22 June didn’t happen. As is often the case in summer people simply have more activities than time. We will continue to plan rides, but ask that if you are planning to attend you drop an e-mail to the organizer to let them know. That way, if no one is going to be able to make it, the organizer isn’t sitting at the meeting point by themselves waiting for no one  Gold Wing Road Riders Association – Region J BC-V – Victoria, BC - July 2013 Edition - Page 3

The rear coil spring suspension wasn't up to the job of handling all the weight when the rider was pushing it through winding country roads that all bikers love to tackle.

CHAPTER EDUCATOR’S CORNER Group Riding

Motorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group -- whether with friends on a Sunday morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally -- is the epitome of the motorcycling experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride: Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank. Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals (see diagrams on next page). Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the group’s riding style. Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.

Gold Wing Road Riders Association – Region J BC-V – Victoria, BC - July 2013 Edition - Page 5

Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally five to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep rider. Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, first-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter. Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled. Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don’t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up. For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants.

GYNECOLOGIST...A MOTORCYCLE MECHANIC? A gynecologist was getting sick of his job and decided that he needed a career change. He’d always enjoyed tinkering with motorcycle engines so thought he’d become a motorcycle mechanic. The good doctor went along to the American Institute of Motorcycling, the best motorcycle mechanics school in the country, and completed the training class. The final exam was to strip a bike engine completely and reassemble it — obviously back into perfect working order. So our gynecologist friend did the test and anxiously awaited the result. The day he received the results he got quite a surprise, he got 150%! He quickly phoned the instructor and queried the mark. The instructor said, “No, no that’s right. First I gave you 50% for stripping down the engine — a very through job. Next I gave you 50% for reassembling it — a fantastic job really. Then I gave you a 50% bonus for doing it all through the muffler.”

IN THE NEWS:

MOTORCYCLIST TAKES PHOTOS OF WOLF CHASING HIM ON HIGHWAY

Plagiarized from CBC News: Jun 13, 2013 6:39 AM MT

A Banff, Alta., man came within metres of being caught by a wolf, but luckily he was on his motorcycle during the close call on Highway 93. He was also able to snap some photos of the chase. Tim Bartlett was testing out his new bike in Kootenay National Park on Saturday when he almost hit a wolf. He swerved and sped away, but then headed back with his camera. By the time he got back to the area where he saw the wolf, it had jumped over a concrete barrier. He thought it was gone. "But as soon as I got to where that was, it jumped back, and the chase was on," said Bartlett. The wolf crossed a lane of traffic while attempting to catch up to him. "It sort of sped up initially; it gave a real good burst of speed," said Bartlett. "And then after that it just trotted along beside me, but it probably got within three or four metres." Bartlett said he once had a border collie that used to chase bikes, and this kind of felt like the same thing. The wolf kept up with him for about a kilometre, while Bartlett snapped some pictures. He eventually sped off — going roughly 100 metres down the highway — before coming to a stop. The wolf had stopped in the middle of the road before heading back into the nearby forest. Bartlett said he wasn't trying to provoke the animal, but was happy with the outcome. "I got six really good shots and ... the one that came in nice and close, he had his ears pinned right back and he was in full gallop," he said. "It looked really cool." Bartlett said it's an incredible experience he will never forget. Wolf chases are rare, Parks Canada says

It's also "not normal behaviour," said Michelle Macullo of Parks Canada. She said it's rare to even see a wolf, never mind to be chased by one. "It's likely that this animal is habituated, so what that means is this animal has lost some of its natural fear of humans… so it's definitely cause for concern for us," she said. The area has attracted wolves in the past because people were feeding them. Officials issued an alert last year when pictures of a wolf being fed rice cakes surfaced. "If people see animals roadside and if they are… being aggressive or doing things like pursuing folks, we need for people to call us because the more information we have, and the sooner they call, the sooner we can go and investigate," said Macullo. Bartlett did report the incident to authorities.

Original 4.80-8 wheels were replace with a new set of 4.80 - 12 sport trail rim and tires for a better pull. This trailer was built for a route 66 rd trip with the heat factor in mind and of course comfort. It has been pulled by a Goldwing and achieved excellent performance during the trip, reaching 80 miles per hour when passing large trucks. It is very stable and really fun to pull even in the twisties of Donner Pass! The trailer is fitted with a solar panel, battery and charging station for laptop, cameras etc. It has a rear view camera that transmits wirelessly to a LCD screen mounted on the windshield of the bike. The construction is made of marine ply and fiberglass cloth and also insulated. A roof vent is fitted as well as a large sliding window with a screen. The trailer can also be pulled by a car or SUV in its current configuration or the tongue could be made shorter if the intent is a car. Recently we filled two shopping carts at Costco in it and went back home with a smile :-)

On the night of 4 May 2013, Alan Shang Fung Tam of Saanich, BC was riding home after work. He was riding northbound on Shelbourne Road near the intersection of North Dairy Road. At approximately 11:23 PM his motorcycle veered off the road and collided with a street sign and a tree before coming to rest. Bystanders in the area gave assistance to the motorcyclist, including CPR, until Police, Fire and Ambulance crews arrived. The motorcyclist was then transported to Victoria General Hospital, but failed to survive. It appears that speed was the likely factor in the accident.
