VEDIC VILLAGE REVIEW # 36 Happy Janmastami! August 17, 2014. Adventures in New Jaipur, Prabhupadanuga Farm in Fiji

MALABAR CHESTNUTS: Pachira Glabra Three years ago we had gotten a few seedlings of what our local nurseryman Jim, who came to Fiji long ago from down under, called “Malnuts,” saying they were ornamentals but not knowing much else. We planted two right in front of the dharmashalla, and last week Saradiya brought in a pod from the tree, now 12 feet high and sporting an exotic trunk that is fat at its base. The pod sat in my office until one morning I noticed it had popped open and I found a handful of nuts inside. Curious, I googled some facts on this pretty yard tree. It is also known as money or lucky tree, Guiana or Malabar chestnut, Guinea or French peanut. The seeds are delicious raw, boiled, fried or roasted and the flavor is similar to peanuts. Roasted seeds can also be ground to make a hot drink similar to hot chocolate. Young leaves and flowers are also edible. The seeds contain 16% protein and 40-50% fat. Pachira glabra, the Malabar Chestnut variety which we have, grows in the tropics naturally along rivers and other bodies of water. It is very adaptable to different soil types, grows well in full sun or partial shade, and is resistant to both drought and flooding. Trees begin to fruit at about 4-5 years, a mature tree producing from 50-80 fruits per year. The bark is used to treat stomach problems and headaches, and is taken to “fortify the blood”. Also, some varieties of chestnuts are ground into a long-lasting flour for baking. We collected a few more pods, roasted and ground the nuts, cooked with pasta in spaghetti, all duly offered to the deities. Voila! Very tasty, for sure, and a wonderful food source. Recognizing the opportunity, I collected more pods and nuts, and planted 65 Malnut trees in plant pots, thinking about where the future New Jaipur nut orchard could go… probably on the “island,” the field surrounded by the old riverbed and left behind when we diverted the river. The seeds came up quickly and the new plants are already a foot high in a week’s time. It was rewarding… another step towards practical self sufficiency. I daydreamed about what Srila Prabhupada would say about malnuts if he was walking about the farm, like he did in 1975 in New Talavan, Mississippi… Surely he would come up with a number of ways to use Malabar chestnuts in delicious food preparations to be offered to Krishna. There are so many different foods on earth with which we are not knowledgeable- like Malabar Chestnuts!

HOME PROGRAMS During the last months that we were still living in town, before we moved out to the farm, we had regular morning and Sunday programs at our home temple. Local devotees and friends or guests attended- on one Janmastami over 60 souls attended. All that changed after we held a rtvik initiation ceremony performed by Yasodananda Prabhu. ISKCON recoiled in horror. We don’t know exactly what was said or done behind the scenes, but thereafter local devotees avoided us, were aloof, forced smiles upon meeting, and no longer came to our banned programs. We had been cut out of their lives. Actually they cut Prabhupada out from their lives, much to their great misfortune. A few continued to attend, while the rest had no daily sadhana programs. They had been convinced that the disciplic succession would be broken and all calamity unleased if the post-Prabhupada, GBC approved, and self-appointed bogus gurus were not accepted and worshipped. Our temple programs were rejected as poisonous to spiritual life, although in reality, not to keep Srila Prabhupada as one’s primary guru is itself fatal to spiritual advancement. How much they have lost! Upon moving out to the farm, we only have been coming into town on Saturdays for our book and prasadam table in front of the main town bank. Lately we have been experimenting with more preps in addition to the mainstay favorite of halavah (secret recipe that includes offering to Prabhupada instead of a conditioned soul). The new cinnamon rolls sold out. Besan and coconut laddus always sell out. The cookies are gone first. The locals now know us for our prasadam sweets, even in Labasa, the town on the other side of the island where we don’t usually distribute prasadam. As such, Sridevi, who takes great delight in distributing her sweets (and occasionally some of Prabhupada’s books), gets to meet and befriend many locals, Indians and Fijians alike. Gradually they become purified by prasadam, the Holy Names, and Prabhupada’s books.. For quite some time we were going a devotee’s house at noon every Saturday, having kirtan and a short Gita class. But recently she had to go to Suva for a couple months for medical reasons. Some others had requested that we come to their homes as well, and we arranged for a short program at the home of some friends outside Savusavu. They and a dozen family members joined us for a kirtan and Gita class. They already had Prabhupada’s unchanged Gita from our booktable. After our second visit, we were requested to teach them how to do Tulasi puja on the next visit. Another lady who got a Gita and japa beads, and who chants a round a day, has asked us to come to visit her home next. Even though we spend most of our time on the farm, we try to do a little contact preaching whenever possible. Jaya Prabhupada! (Below: old scenes from our former town programs)

BITS AND PIECES News of the passing away of His Grace Madhudvisa Prabhu came recently. I did not know him personally very well, and I remember him from the 1970’s, either in India or Los Angeles. I think I only sat down and talked with him once in Los Angeles at a Prabhupada Reunion in 1996. He was warm and friendly, but I know him better from the videos of when Srila Prabhupada visited Australia. I admire how comfortable yet respectful he was with Srila Prabhupada, leading him to various engagements, and I was deeply impressed as Prabhupada lovingly and humbly watches him leading kirtan and glorifying Prabhupada loudly into the microphone. One can see in Prabhupada’s eyes how dear Madhudvisa Prabhu was to him, and it is immediate to assume he has gone back to join Prabhupada in further services somewhere else. We are thus left more alone, as one by one, those who were the personal servants and associates of His Divine Grace are departing for their next chapters in serving His Divine Grace. It is left to us remaining aged aspirants to effect the restoration of the Krishna consciousness movement. It is a difficult task, to restore the divine mission. How can I leave if Prabhupada’s mission is not on sound footing first? How will I be able to face Srila Prabhupada if I fail in my responsibility to at least do my part in maintaining the great movement that he took so much effort to establish? I must somehow meaningfully help the strict Prabhupadanugas succeed in this epic challenge. As the Gaudiya Math became useless by neglecting the orders of their founder-acharya, the same has happened to ISKCON since Prabhupada’s 1977 departure. I start by honestly adhering to Prabhupada’s instructions (anyone can quote and justify their deviations) and refusing to participate in an ISKCON stolen by ambitious self-promoting, unauthorized socalled gurus. That much will be my badge of honor, that I could recognize the offenses to His Divine Grace and remained faithful. Madhudvisa Prabhu never participated in the bogus guru system of ISKCON, surely at least partly due to a letter he received from Prabhupada ( 75-08-04) wherein it read: The GBC should all be the instructor gurus. I am in the initiator guru, and you should be the instructor guru by teaching what I am teaching and doing what I am doing. This is not a title, but you must actually come to this platform. This I want. The roof on the second of six cottages is near ready for the corrugated iron. I wondered if I should attempt the painting of the first cottage’s metal roof. Not being as sprightly and resilient as I once was due to the effects of time, the work was spread out over three days. With a small styrofoam boogie board to sit and kneel upon, I remembered my painter days in college and how hardly anyone in Fiji could do a decent simple paint job. I had to do it. And I enjoyed it, even though my bare foot got sunburnt and my back muscles protested. I hope Bhakta Benjamin likes tropic green!

The chico (sapodilla) trees are beginning to bear fruits, and I think the avocadoes will bear this coming summer. We are in the southern hemisphere, and July-August is “freezing” winter now. I even had to get out a pullover sweater this morning because of the chill, although I managed without socks. One recent morning, the thermometer bottomed at 68 F (20 C). Our climate ranges from 68 to 88 F with 125 inches rain a year and tradewinds half the time. A cyclone hits some part of Fiji on average every two years, but the last direct hit to our farm was back in the eighties. The last month was unusually dry- requiring watering the garden almost every afternoon. At first I was thinking, “Oh, I have so much else to do…” But soon I began to look forward to my time alone in the field across the river and beyond the ivi forest, above the new rice blocks. I have rigged a gravity flow water supply by PVC pipes from the year-round stream next to the garden area. As I sprinkled my rows and patches of edible plants, a pair of musk parrots interrupted the sigh of the tropical sea breezes which floated over the shoreline mangrove forestRaaackkk! Raaackkk! I answered back as best I could imitate, watering and weeding until near dark.

New Jaipur, Vanua Levu, Fiji Islands

PS. If you would like to be added to our regular mailings of Vedic Village Review news bulletins, please send us an email at [email protected]. Donations welcomed! Hare Krishna! All Glories to Srila Prabhupada! P.S. New Jaipur Vedic Village farm project is a Prabhupadanuga undertaking, keeping Srila Prabhupada as the diksa guru via rtvik representatives. It is outside of the official ISKCON organization, and as an affiliate of the Hare Krishna Society, we are part of Prabhupada’s ISKCON. There are 857 acres titled land, no mortgage, a pristine environment in the South Seas rainforests of Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second largest island. We are looking for a few qualified and dedicated devotees to join the project. One must chant 16 rounds daily, follow the four rules, visit the project, and if all goes well, a cottage and a new future await… there is no cost except 8 hours community service a week, regular attendance to the morning program, and to become a productive participant (one fifth goes to the deities, Sri Sri Radha Govinda). Keep New Jaipur in mind as a positive alternative to the rapidly devolving situation in the

modern civilization. Nuclear war approaches, and humanity is due for much turmoil which can only be alleviated by establishing Prabhupada’s varnashram farms, or rural Hare Krishna Vedic villages.
