To increase the number of African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander community college students who transfer to and graduate from 4 year colleges/universities in biomedical science majors. The program is an important part of the NIH effort to diversify the nation’s biomedical science professions. There are NIH B2B programs hosted by colleges and universities across the U.S.

Who are B2B students? ▶
To be eligible for the program, students must be: ◦ African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American or Pacific Islander ◦ Aspire to transfer to a 4-year college in a biomedical science major, such as: ⚫ Biology ⚫ Chemistry ⚫ Biological or Chemical Engineering ⚫ Public Health ⚫ Psychology (with biological focus)

During the academic year, the B2B students will be tutored in their STEM classes During the summer, they can participate in our summer research program As part of the academic advising program, students receive assistance with the UC application and personal statement. Past UC Berkeley B2B participants have transferred to universities such as Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, and UC San Diego.
Summer Research Program ▶

Full-time, 9-week summer research program Work with UCB faculty and graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, or research scientist mentors Students will participate in professional development meetings and workshops Students will present their research projects in poster session at the end of the program
Mentor qualifications ◦ Full time working in a lab during the summer of 2017 ◦ Lab needs to be near or on Berkeley campus ◦ Must have a college degree: Graduate students, Postdocs, Research scientists, and technicians ⚫ Unfortunately, first-year rotation students are NOT eligible
◦ Passionate about mentoring and teaching, and outreaching to students of diverse backgrounds ◦ Previous mentoring experience is preferred
Mentor responsibilities ▶

Design a summer project and an individual development plan for your Bridges student Supervise your Bridges student on the project for 9 weeks Help your student develop weekly project goals and progress reports Assist your Bridges student in learning the techniques and scientific concepts behind the project, in abstract writing, and in preparing for poster and oral presentations Attend professional development workshops, in which the mentors will learn and share strategies of mentoring students in research.

January 16th: Application opens February 23rd: Application is due February and March: Application is reviewed Late March – Early April: Decision made Late May-Early June: Student (May 31) and mentor orientation (date TBD) June 4-8: Program officially begins – QB3 bootcamp for students June 11th – students’ first day in lab Late June – Early July – mid-summer mentor check-in dinner and cultural fluency training August 1 – poster session
