Solving and Building Systems of Equations
Methods for Solving Systems
A. Graphing
B. Substitution
C. Elimination
D. Technology
The solution to a system is the set of all points that represent the intersection(s) of the curves.
• if the curves do not intersect, there is NO SOLUTION. • If the curves intersect everywhere, there are INFINITELY MANY SOLUTIONS

I. Graphing Typically, we reserve this method for linear equations as it can be very inefficient, especially for functions that we don't know.
Examples A. Solve the systems of equations by graphing:

II. Solve Systems of equations by SUBSTITUTION:
I. both equations are solved for the same variable A. set them equal to each other B. solve for the remaining variable C. substitute back into an original equation to find other variable D. write as an ordered pair II. both equations not solved for the same variable A. solve one or both variables for the easiest or same variable B. solve for the remaining variable C. substitute back into an original equation to find other variable D. write as an ordered pair

Solving Systems by Elimination 1. rearrange equation(s) so that like variables are aligned 2. multiply one or both equations by a factor that allows a variable to eliminate 3. add equations together and solve for the variable 4. plug value back into an original equation to solve for other variable
Examples. A. 3x-5y = 10
6x- y = 2

IV. Technology Using the calculator is not always a possibility. In order to use the calculator, the equations must be able to be solved for y. A. Solve each equation for y = B. Type in Y= C. Think about the domain and the possible number of intersections. If you can, adjust the WINDOW. D. ZOOM/0 to look for point(s) of intersection. E. Use 2nd/TRACE/5/Enter/Enter/Enter to locate intersection.
