TSP Times April 2015 CLIMATE JUSTICE GROUP REPORT What is happening in the divestment movement? The movement for divestment from fossil fuels is growing very fast and is manifesting itself in numerous ways: • •

Recently the largest demonstration on climate in Canadian history took place in Quebec City, sponsored by several large organizations, including 350.org. Several financial advisors have indicated that the push for fossil free investment options is growing far more rapidly than anyone imagined and that the industry largely is not prepared to deal with their clients’ concerns. Therefore, the very recent introduction of fossil free solutions from at least two fund managers is a welcome move. Watch the TSP Climate Justice Alternative Investments page for continuing updates for both individuals and investors: http://www.trinitystpauls.ca/alternative-investment/ The Guardian newspaper in the UK has launched a huge climate campaign, whose focus is on the need to leave uncombusted fossil fuels in the ground if we are to survive. Daily articles are being written supporting divestment from fossil fuels in the lead-up to the Paris Summit in December 2015 (check out http://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2015/mar/16/keep-it-in-theground-guardian-climate-change-campaign). Many await with keen anticipation the message on climate expected soon from Pope Francis, while congregations in Anglican, United, and Unitarian churches across Canada are moving forward their faith positions within their own denominations.

What about regulatory and financial frameworks on carbon emissions? In addition to the above work on divestment, The United Church of Canada and its pension plan has signed on to a letter sent from 53 religious institutional investors with combined assets of more than $2 billion calling on the Government of Canada “to establish mechanisms to set a clear, reliable, and effective price for carbon emissions with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and limiting catastrophic climate change.” These investors wrote: “Caring for God’s creation is fundamental to all our faith traditions. We believe we have a responsibility to care for ourselves and each other, our life together in community, and the natural environment that sustains us. Care for the economy and care for the environment are not separate concerns. Both are integral to caring for God’s creation.” Erik Mathiesen, Chief Financial Officer of the United Church, said, “Those with the responsibility to invest funds held in trust for our faith communities and the retirement incomes of those who serve them believe that action by governments to set a price on carbon is essential for the long-term viability and growth of our financial investments.” This is one of several recent initiatives by the United Church and the pension fund to address issues of climate change as both live into their call to invest responsibly. We hope this sets a

good framework for our motions on divestment going forward to the United Church General Council this summer. What is our Climate Justice Group doing at this time? 1. Since our unanimous congregational vote in February 2014 to divest from fossil fuels, Walter Whiteley has been actively working on the question of financial divestment/reinvestment options for individuals and institutions. In June of 2014 our TSP Trustee Board moved our funds away from investments in fossil fuels. We are pleased that the opportunities for fossil fuel free investment are growing and that Walter is monitoring this diligently. This past week six people from TSP attended a presentation by Genus Financial, who later in the same day met with our TSP Trustee Board, to discuss their recently announced fossil free investment solutions. The Trustees also did due diligence with three groups in BC (including a United Church in Vancouver) who are very satisfied with the service, the reporting, and the returns from Genus. There is an agreement in principle among the trustees that TSP will move our funds (just under $700,000) which are now in Fiera Capital to Genus Capital. When we have a draft contract, and draft investment plan (asset mix, desired returns, fees), the Trustees will hold a final vote. 2. We continue to participate in 350.org sponsored activities. The “StepUp, Canada!” campaign is a collaboration between the People’s Climate Movement (PCM) and Toronto 350.org calling on the Canadian government to develop a clear national action plan to reduce carbon emissions. Ann Russell and Madeleine Endicott have joined StepUp Canada! as presentation volunteers, getting trained in a presentation seeking to educate the public about the causes, consequences and Canada's role in the global effort to address climate change. Ann Russell took part in a StepUp Canada! Earth Day action at Nathan Phillips Square where two human hashtags were created and sent out on social media at #StepUpCA and #ActOnClimate. If you are a part of any group that would be interested in having a presentation, contact Ann or Madeleine. 3. In May our members will lead two webinars offered by the Fossil Free Faith network. We hope that you will join us for these on : May 5, 3-4pm (EDT): Building Support for Action: TSP’s story. Register here. May 27, 3-4pm (EDT): Addressing Trustee Concerns. Register here. 4. On June 5th our group will lead a workshop during Toronto United Church Conference sessions on our divestment motions going forward to UCC General Council in the summer.

5. On April 11, 2015 six people from TSP were among the 25,000 participants marching in Quebec City--Madeleine Endicott and Steve McMurtry, Mary-Margaret Jones and Patia Thompson-Jones, and Jeanne Moffat and Bob Fugere. a.
