Feb. 21, 2018 Jill Silvey, District Manager BLM Elko District Office 3900 Idaho Street Elko, NV 89801 Pete McFadden, Acting District Manager BLM Ely District Office 702 North Industrial Way Ely, NV 89301 Re: Triple B Complex Wild Horse Roundup Dear Ms. Silvey and Mr. McFadden, On behalf of our 600,000 supporters and followers, we are writing to you to request that you halt the wild horse roundup underway in the Triple B Complex, because foaling season has commenced. This is evidenced by yesterday’s capture operation, in which three mares with three newly born foals were stampeded over a long distance by helicopter into the trap. One foal was so tiny, that he or she was hand carried by a wrangler into the trap. While we appreciate the BLM’s decision to release the three mares and their foals at the end of the day yesterday, we disagree with the plan to continue the roundup today despite the documented presence of young foals on the range. There can be no excuse for continuing this helicopter roundup in which heavily pregnant mares – many about to give birth – are being driven for miles in frigid temperatures – and now tiny foals are also being ens nared in the capture operation. The decision to continue the roundup is especially unjustified in light of the fact that, as of yesterday, the BLM has already captured a total of 1,308 horses. The extreme winter conditions and the presence of newly –born foals are documented in the video and photographs taken by AWHC representatives on site. You can view the video at this link. We urgently request that the BLM immediately end the Triple B roundup for the reasons stated above. While your representatives have stated that today will likely be the last day of the roundup, we would like your assurance that this is the case. Thank you for your prompt response to this urgent and timely inquiry. Sincerely,
Suzanne Roy Suzanne Roy Suzanne Roy, Executive Director
