Recycling saves both energy and material resources. A recent study conducted by the Technical University of Denmark and the Danish Topic Centre found that, in 83% of the cases they investigated, recycling was the most efficient way to get rid of rubbish. Some materials are more efficient to recycle than others. To produce a product out of recycled aluminum, for example, uses only about 5% of the energy that it costs to produce the same product from new aluminum, making aluminum one of the most recyclable materials. Paper, on the other hand, uses about 60% of the energy required to create a new product-definitely not as good as aluminum, but still a big reduction in cost. Recycling can result in the reduction of new material that must be used. In the case of paper, that means harvesting fewer trees.
What do those numbers mean? Plastic recyclables are usually labeled with a number from one through seven. These numbers simply refer to the type of plastic used. Unfortunately, some recycling locations only accept certain types of plastics.. For a full list of the different types of plastic and what they are used for, you can visit this website: www.nsf.org/consumer/recycling/index.asp
