Benavente and its region
The town of Benavente is located over a hill in the middle of a big plain in the north of province of Zamora, 65 km from Zamora and 260 km from Madrid. Belongs to the “Comarca de Benavente y Los Valles”, which comprises of 55 municipalities. The population of Benavente is near 20.000 people and is surrounded by three rivers, the Tera, Esla and Orbigo, the last one passes through the city.

The main factor of erosion in this area is the rain. As an example, in the park of the Mota a footbridge was built in the year 2012, which went from the Park to the municipal swimming pools. Due to the abundant rains a landslide occurred and the footbridge collapsed on March 16, 2013.

Benavente is characterized by a continentalized mediterranean climate caused by altitude (744 meters above sea level). Winters are very cold with frequency of frost (temperatures below 5ºC) and hot summers with temperatures averaging 25ºC. The rainfall over the year is high except the months of July and August. Vegetation more common in the area is the oak, heather, broom and jara, although other vegetation can be found, such as poplar or ash poplar. The banks of the rivers that cross the region are protected areas.

Owes its importance to the geographical situation in a preferential place, because it is a crossroads since ancient times until today. On the outskirts converge the highways A-6 and A-52, and the national road N-630, these are some of the principal roads of communication in Spain. Also includes routes that pass through here, as the Camino de Santiago, which joins pilgrims from Madrid, Andalucía o Extremadura with the Camino Frances, or the Vía de la Plata, transiting from Mérida (Badajoz) to Astorga (León).
Benavente and its region Therefore,Benavente is an important communication hub, and it has a Transport Centre that is a strategic point for the sector. Some of the principal industries are “Bodegas Otero”, the cheese factory “Ilbesa” and “Lácteas Cobreros” (secondary sector). The main crops are cereal, vine and peppers in the primary sector, and the commercial zone on the main streets of the town in tertiary sector.Benavente has several interesting tourist places, as the Tower of Caracol or the Mota Castle, the Main Square, churches of Santa María and San Juan del Mercado, the Theatre Reina Sofía .

The town has six public schools, three high schools and two concerted schools. It has also two musical groups, the Maestro Lupi Musical Band and the Duquesa Pimentel School. There are other services too, as The Comarcal Hospital, and public safety services (Guardia Civil, Policía Local and Protección Civil), and other general services as Public Library, Bus Station and sports facilities.
Benavente and its region Benavente has two important festivities of Regional Tourist Interest: - Festivity of La Veguilla: In honor of the Virgen de la Vega, celebrates on Monday, eight days after Resurrection Sunday. - Festivity of the Toro Enmaromado:Bullfight consisting in running with a long rope attached to the horns of a bull. It celebrates the day after Corpus(40 days after Veguilla).
