[email protected] Course Description This course is designed to support students who are preparing for the TOEFL exam. The afternoon focuses on developing student writing skills. Strategies for the independent writing task and the integrated writing task will be reviewed. Course Objectives • to troubleshoot problem areas in short-essay writing and brainstorm solutions • to effectively plan and execute an essay of 250-300 words in length • overall, to write at a standard acceptable by the TOEFL iBT testing criteria, that is, essays which: o Answer the question o Are comprehensible o Are organized o Demonstrate understandable flow of ideas o Observe rules of grammatical correctness o Use advanced vocabulary appropriately and effectively Feedback and Progress Anecdotal feedback will be given to students with regards to their writing on a weekly basis Numerical data will be kept by the instructor to track progress. Students will be expected to reflect on their own writing development as well as the writing of their peers, to offer advice and support when asked.

It is important to actively attend all classes in order to benefit from this course. Active attendance includes punctuality, completion of in-class tasks and homework, and most importantly, a positive attitude. Please let the instructor know in advance if you are going to be late or absent.
