WEEK B-O2

JOHN 1: 35-42

JESUS CALLS FOLLOWERS John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, Rabbi “Where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah”. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas”.

1. UNDERSTAND IT!

2. EXPLORE IT!

John was with two of his disciples when he noticed Jesus walking by. Recognize Jesus as the Messiah, the two disciples followed Jesus. One of the two disciples was Andrew. Andrew found his brother Simon and introduced him to Jesus. From there, Simon, who became known as Peter, also followed Jesus.

3. CONNECT IT! Recognizing Jesus as the Messiah, the disciples followed Jesus immediately. Andrew followed Jesus with no questions and believed in Him. From there, he also encouraged Peter to follow Jesus. In the Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus is also calling us to do the same as Andrew. To respond immediately to Him and to seek Him. We can find Jesus in the obvious places, including in the tabernacle. He is also in the people in our lives, including our parents. Jesus calls on us to respond immediately to Jesus and to those who He placed on earth to take care of us, our parents.

5. REMEMBER IT!

4. LIVE IT! [ RESPONSIVENESS ] Responsiveness—the quality of reacting quickly and positively The challenge for this week is to ask two of your friends to read a bible verse and reflect it with each other. Additionally, respond to your parents immediately when they ask you to do something.

6. PRAY IT!

“ANDREW, THE BROTHER OF SIMON PETER, WAS ONE OF THE TWO WHO HEARD JOHN AND FOLLOWED JESUS.” (JOHN 1:40)

Lord, may Your love give us more strength and wisdom to live Your words and to spread it to other people around us. Allow us to live better and be better kids in our families and to strengthen us to stay away from sins. Amen.

JESUS CALLS FOUR FISHERMEN WEEK B-O3

MARK 1: 14-20

After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the tie of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther an saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.

4

FULFILLMENT

The achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted

REPENT

Feel or express sincere regret or remorse about one’s wrongdoing or sin

MENDING

Things to be repaired often by sewing

Today’s Gospel can be understood in two parts: the call and challenge; and the responses to the call. Jesus tells the people that the kingdom of God is at hand, to repent and believe in the Gospel. He tells the four fishermen to follow Him and He will make them “fishers of men.” All accepted the call and went to follow Jesus. All of them did it willingly; they did not contemplate or feel proud of the moment. They took it as an honor and just obeyed and followed Him.

Jesus is calling each one of us. Are we going to listen closely to hear it? When we do, how are we going to respond? What will limit us to follow Jesus and follow in His footsteps? Sometimes it is hard to listen for the call because we have so much going on in our lives. We have school, family, friends, church, TNTT, and the list goes on. Yet Jesus calls on us to make time for Him in our lives and to respond to Him.

HUMILITY— to be modest or low view of one’s own importance; to be humble Sometimes we are too proud of ourselves with our accomplishments, that we tend to show off and put people down to make ourselves feel good about ourselves. We should take the time to appreciate our accomplishments but take them to look at ourselves to improve further. We can never be perfect in everything that we do, but we can take them as a learning experience to help others and ourselves. This week, practice to respond in a good manner at all times. Apologize even if it is not our fault when your parents reprimand you.

“Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.’” (Mark 1:17)

Dear God, let us pray that we can hear Your call. Let us hope that we can respond to Your call with humility and are able to accept the call and persevere for the challenges that await us with Your help and grace. Amen.

JESUS CURES A DEMONIAC Week B-O4

Mark 1:21-28

Then they came to Capernaum, and on the sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes. In their synagogue was a man with an unclean spirit; he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked him and said, “Quiet! Come out of him!” The unclean spirit convulsed him and with a loud cry came out of him. All were amazed and asked one another, “What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.” His fame spread everywhere throughout the whole region of Galilee.

1. Understand It! Sabbath: a day of religious observance from work Synagogue: a building where a Jewish assembly or congregation meets for religious worship and instruction Astonished: greatly surprised or impressed; amazed 6

6

Scribe: an ancient Jewish recordkeeper and later, a professor theologian Rebuke: to express sharp disapproval or criticism of someone because of their behavior or actions Convulsed: a person suffering a violent involuntary contraction of the muscles, often resulting in uncontrollable shaking, spasms, and shudders

2. Explore It! Jesus was not well known when He entered the synagogue in Capernaum. He spoke to the people of the teachings of God, which surprised them because they did not know Him and Jesus taught with authority. When a man with an unclean spirit confronted Jesus, Jesus speaks critically and forces the unclean spirit to leave the man. With this event, the people are even more surprised and astonished. People spread the word of what Jesus had done.

3. Connect It! In a way, Jesus had no power at all. He was not a king to rule over a kingdom, nor was he a priest who had power at that time. The only power he had was the supreme confidence that what he said and taught was God’s will. Therefore, His authority, therefore, came from the power of His words and His example through His actions. Jesus did not use His authority to obtain power, but to show kindness and serve humanity. In today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us that we must also not use our authority or our position to obtain power, but rather, use it to be an example to others of what God calls us to be, children of Christ. The quality of being friendly,

4. Live It! [ Kindness ]

5. Pray It!

This week, go out of your way to be kind and considerate to someone different each day. Do not wait until you are asked to do something, but be proactive to help out. This could be your parents, siblings, school friends, fellow TNTT members, etc.

“He commands even the unclean sprits and they obey him.” (Mark 1: 27)

6. Pray It! Dear Lord, help us to be kind and merciful. Let no one ever come to us without coming away better and happier. Help us be a living expression of God’s kindness in Your face, kindness in our eyes, kindness in our smiles, and kindness in our warm greetings. Amen.

JESUS RAISES UP, HEALS, AND FREES WEEK B-O5 MARK 1:29-39 On leaving the synagogue Jesus entered the house of Simon and Andrew with James and John. Simon’s mother-‐in-‐law lay sick with a fever. They immediately told him about her. He approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them. When it was evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who were ill or possessed by demons. The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, not permitting them to speak because they knew him. Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. Simon and those who were with him pursued him and on finding him said, “Everyone is looking for you.” He told them, “Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” So he went into their synagogues, preaching and driving out demons throughout the whole of Galilee.

1

8

Understand It!

Synagogue

The building where a Jewish assembly or congregation meets for religious worship and instruction.

Galilee

Fertile, mountainous region in northern Israel. It’s known for the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus is walked on water

2

Explore It!

As Jesus begins His ministry in Galilee He has called disciples. In the Capernaum synagogue He healed a man with an unclean spirit by "rebuking" the spirit and calling it out of him. The amazed local folks talk about this new teacher and exorcist everywhere. Meanwhile, after the healing in the synagogue, Jesus returns to Simon Peter's house, and there lies Simon Peter's mother-in-law in the grip of a fever. This is no small matter in the ancient world. A fever was not only debilitating for a short while, but was often a symptom of a condition that would lead to death. Jesus simply "raises her up." In Mark's direct words, He says, "...and the fever left her and she served them. There is a moment of truth in the cure of Simon’s mother-inlaw. When we are cured from a sickness by whatever means, it is tempting to sit back and accept people’s good wishes and congratulations. This sick woman felt her temperature drop, and energy return to her limbs “and she began to serve them”.

3

Connect It!

Who do you take your troubles to? Jesus heard Simon’s prayer for his sick mother-in-law and the fever left her. There is no trouble He will not face with us and for us. Put your trust in Him. It is important that we as Catholic retreat from the noise of our busy lifestyle and get alone with the purpose of seeking God. If Jesus retreated, surely we must follow His example. If we would stop regularly to commune alone with God, we would share fresh insight right from the heart of God.

5

4

Live It! [ COURAGE ]

Courage means to be able to do something that is frightening. When Simon’s mother-in-law is cured, she does what Jesus Himself does. She serves those in need. She becomes a disciple. Wellbeing of spirit involves a willingness to serve, while spiritual sickness means that you are concerned only about yourself. Practice these tasks to be better Catholics: 1) Even when you’re not feeling well, help your parents around the house! 2) When your brothers/sisters need help with homework, try your best to help her/him! 3) When you feel that you’re lonely, go in to your room and pray with God, talk to Him, He’s always there for you!

Remember It!

“He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons.” (Mark 1:34)

6

Pray It!

Lord, deliver us from seeking Your help only in times of difficulty. May we grow in grateful love for the ways You daily raise us up and call us to the service of the community. Amen.

WEEK B-O6

MARK 1:40-45

A leper came to him [and kneeling down] begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” The leprosy left him immediately, and he was made clean. Then, warning him sternly, he dismissed him at once. Then he said to him, “See that you tell no one anything, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed; that will be proof for them.” The man went away and began to publicize the whole matter. He spread the report abroad so that it was impossible for Jesus to enter a town openly. He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere.

1.

10

Understand It!

Leper

A person who has leprosy.

Leprosy

Skin disease causing bumps to arise on the skin.

Sternly

In a serious and firm manner.

Publicize

To make known to a large number of people.

2.

Explore It!

Back in biblical times, there wasn’t much known about leprosy other than that it was contagious and very scary. It was believed that leprosy was caused by people’s sins. Touching a leper would cause you to be unclean and you could even catch leprosy from them! Therefore, lepers were shunned and exiled to the outskirts of the cities to avoid contagion. But what does it mean when Jesus said, “offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed”? According to the Book of Levi Chapter 14, Verses 1-20 – there was a whole ritual that lepers had to go through to prove that they were free of the disease. It was only after they had finished the ritual that they could re-enter society, or the city, rather than continuing to live on the outskirts of the city. However, Jesus did not do this to be famous – he simply cured the leper as he cared for the other person. Jesus had even warned the leper to not tell anyone, yet the man did not listen to him.

3.

Connect It! In this week’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us to be caring to everyone, no matter who they are. Rather than become disgusted at the sight of the leper, He touched the leper and cured him, at the risk of becoming unclean. Sometimes Jesus can be said of and caring

4.

what may seem little to you may be very meaningful to the other person. do anything, so curing a man of leprosy is not a big deal. The same thing can you – little actions you do can make someone’s day. A small act of kindness can go a long way.

Live It!

CARING

5.

Remember It!

Caring means to display kindness and concern for others. We all love our parents and friends but we may sometimes forget to show how much we care and appreciate them. This week, show someone how much you care for them. You can do something nice for someone, or write a card telling someone how much you care for and are thankful for them. It doesn’t even have to be someone that you know – a simple random act of kindness could maybe help someone who is having a bad day feel better.

6.

Pray It!

Dear Lord, please help us to be more loving, caring and respectful to the people around us, even to the people we may not agree with, and to treat others the way we want to be treated. Amen.

WEEK B-L1 MARK 1:12-15

JESUS IS TEMPTED At once the spirit drove him out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfilment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”

1. Understand It!

2. Explore It!

Tempted

An attempt to get someone to do something.

Ministered

To attend to the needs of someone.

Proclaiming

To announce officially or publicly.

Repent

To feel or express regret about one’s wrongdoing.

Despite being three short verses, today’s Gospel reading brings together many themes. Jesus enters the desert following His baptism in the Sea of Galilee. During His time in the desert, Satan tempts Jesus, but Jesus rises above it all and is taken care of by the angels. From there, Jesus not only proclaims the Good News, but He embodies the Good News. He calls on all people to repent now, as the Kingdom of God is at hand.

3. Connect It! Today’s Gospel appears to have two primary messages. First, is resisting temptation and the second is the call to repent. While Satan tested Jesus, we see God presence emerge from Jesus’ struggle and testing. Regardless of where we are in life, during the difficulties, God is always there. Coming out of the desert, we see Jesus emerging from the desert stronger in faith. He speaks forcefully that now is the time. This is our chance to be with God in Heaven, but we must first repent. To repent is not simply to go to confession, it means a change of heart and mind, where we emerge from our repentance and confession with a new attitude, changing our behavior, and turning to God in all times.

12

4. Live It! [ TRUTHFULNESS ] Truthfulness means to tell or express the truth; being honest. Jesus calls on us to always be truthful in life. This means in our relationship with others, such as family, friends, and peers, but very importantly, in our relationship with God. This week, make every effort to be truthful with the people you encounter. Additionally, make an extra effort to be truthful to God in the Sacrament of Confession. Do not just stop there, seek reconciliation and make a genuine effort to not commit the sin again. Write how the little boy below is being truthful.

JESUS IS TRANSFIGURED

Week B-L2 Mark 9: 2-10

After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared among them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply: “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us makes three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting shadow over them; then from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant.

The Gospel this week reveals to us a great event that happened to Jesus. When He took three of His disciples; Peter, James, and John up a mountain, Jesus showed them His shining glory. Jesus’ facial appearance changed and His clothes became extremely bright. After His transfiguration, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking to Jesus. Suddenly, God the Father spoke from the cloud saying Jesus is His Son and ordered all to listen to Jesus. Jesus then asked His disciples not to tell anyone about the event until Jesus has been raised from the dead, although the disciples did not fully understand.

3. CONNECT IT!

Today’s Gospel tells the story of a great moment in Jesus’ life and the lives of His disciples. The great miracle of the Transfiguration revealed the divinity of Christ before His passion and death. Three of His disciples witnessed Jesus’ Transfiguration, which aimed to strengthen the apostles’ faith in anticipation to what was to come, the Passion. Like the disciples, God the Father invites us to recognize the glory of His beloved Son, Jesus, and listen to Him. God gives us experiences to help us strengthen our faith in Him, just like how the three disciples witnessed the Transfiguration. When bread and wine becomes Christ’s body and blood, it is a miracle we are honored to witness every time we participate in Mass. Jesus is inviting us to be one with Him. Next time you attend Mass, listen to Jesus’ words in the Gospel and see if you can feel His presence.

4. LIVE IT!

[ Visionary ] Visionary: thinking with imagination or wisdom

5. REMEMBER IT!

God the Father calls us to listen to His beloved Son, Jesus, who has great wisdom and vision of the future.

“This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” (Mark 9:7)

When you go to Mass this week, spend some quiet time and ask Jesus to help you envision Him in the Mass. When you get home, write down how you feel and share it with your parents and friends.

6. PRAY IT! Heavenly Father, please help us to listen to Jesus when we attend Mass this week so that we can be a witness of His glory in our life. Amen.

JESUS CLEANSES THE TEMPLE WEEK B-L3

JOHN 2:13-25

Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the moneychangers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the moneychangers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” His disciples recalled the words of Scripture; Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well.

1. Understand It!

16

Moneychangers

Merchants selling goods and offering.

Temple

A place of worship.

Sign

Proof or evidence.

Scripture

Sacred writing in the Bible.

Feast of Passover

A festival celebrating liberation of Israelites from Egyptian slavery.

2. Explore It! In today’s Gospel, Jesus was angered by the Jews, who used the temple as a marketplace. He drove them out of the temple area with a whip and overturned their tables and spilled the coins of the money changers. When the Jews challenged Jesus, and asked for a sign. He tells them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews replied, "This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?" They didn’t understand that Jesus was referring the temple of His body. After Jesus resurrection, the disciples remembered this and they came to believe the word of Jesus had spoken. The Gospel challenges us to believe not because of the signs we see but because we have come to accept and understand Jesus and His message. His message to us in this Lenten season is to clean our hearts of all that is bad.

3. Connect It! The Gospel reading today shows us that not only Jesus was human and could get very angry like we get angry sometimes, but that God’s love was bigger than any temple or building or sacrifice could ever hold. God’s love is so big that it’s bigger than all the sins and all the things we can do wrong. God’s love to us is Jesus. So even though Jesus is angry with the Jews in this reading, Jesus is also reminding us that God’s love is huge.

4. Live It! [ CLEANLINESS ] Cleanliness means being physically clean of dirt, stain, and spiritually of sin. Lent is a good time for a spring cleaning. Take a moment and share this Gospel reading with your parents. Discuss the following with each other: 

Who are “money changer” in your life that pollute your temple?

What kind of debris are there between you and God?

It is time sweep it up and take out the trash. In doing so you cleanse your heart and soul so that your temple is a place for you to worship God.

5. Remember It! “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” (John 2: 16) 6. Live It! Dear Jesus, You love us very much. Thank you for reminding us to keep God’s house clean, please help us to be good and free from sin so that we can keep our souls a beautiful place for You to live inside of us. Amen.

JESUS GIVES US LIGHT WEEK B-L4

JOHN 3:14-21 Jesus said to Nicodemus: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.

1. Understand It!

18

Eternal

Lasting forever.

Perish

Going to die or expired.

Condemn

Judging someone with disapproval and to receive punishment.

Verdict

Final decision.

Exposed

Made visible and shown.

2. Explore It! The Gospel reading today reminds us that Jesus came into the world to save us. Jesus tells us that he must be lifted up and sacrificed so that everyone may be saved if they believe. One way to think about Jesus is that He is the light. He is the light that is sent into a world where people like to stay in the darkness. This darkness is sin. There are people who prefer to stay in the darkness and away from the light so they can do whatever they want, but those who follow Jesus, who is the light, will be saved. That is what the Gospel today wants us to understand: if we believe in Jesus, the Son of God, and follow His light, we will be saved.

3. Connect It! There are a lot of times when we make mistakes and sin. There are also a lot of times where we do good things and we are rewarded. Jesus came into the world not to condemn it, but to save it. Jesus is like the light that shines in the dark. Sometimes when we make mistakes, we stand in the dark and can see where the light is. But when we do good, we are in the light and can see where God wants us to go. This is thanks to Jesus who is the light. If we follow the light and believe in Jesus who came to save us, we will be saved! During Mass when the priest holds up Jesus in the Eucharist, do you look and believe that you are looking at Jesus? What do you say to Him when you look at Him?

4. Live It! [ WISDOM ]

5. Remember It!

Wisdom means to learn, understand, and grow from mistakes you’ve made. Having wisdom or being wise isn’t knowing everything there is to know. It is about learning from the mistakes you’ve made in the past, understanding what you did wrong and what you can do differently, and growing from it. This doesn’t necessarily mean you never make the same mistakes again, but when you do make the mistakes again, you know what you did wrong and accept that you aren’t perfect.

“And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil.” (John 3:19)

6. Pray It! Dear Jesus, You came to save the world, but sometimes we forget that You still love us even when we mess up. Please help us to understand how to accept our mistakes and learn from them. Thank you for always loving us and forgiving us. Amen.

JESUS PROMISES ETERNAL LIFE

WEEK B-L5 JOHN 12:20-33

Some Greeks who had come to worship at the Passover Feast came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me. “I am troubled now. Yet what should I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But it was for this purpose that I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it and will glorify it again.” The crowd there heard it and said it was thunder; but others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come for my sake but for yours. Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He said this indicating the kind of death he would die.

1. Understand It!

20

Worship

The feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for God.

Amen

“I believe”

Serves

Perform duties or services for a person.

Servant

One that serves others.

Glorified

To give glory, honor, or high praise to.

2. Explore It! In the Nicene Creed that we pray every Sunday, we say that Jesus was crucified, died, and was buried. It was in this moment where Jesus tells His Disciples that His time had come. It was time for Jesus to die for us! For our sins! Jesus tells us that we are called to follow Him and by following Him, we will come with Him to the Kingdom and have eternal life. For it was out of love that God brought His son to us so that we may be able to love God right back.

4. Live It! [ SERVICE ]

3. Connect It! Jesus said, "unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit." When Jesus died and went up to Heaven, He left us with the Eucharist and the Catholic Church with Peter as our first Pope. We are the fruits of Jesus! And because of that, every single one of us are called to love God and show that love to the world.

5. Remember It!

Service means helping or doing work for someone. Jesus taught us that we all need to come together and help each other with open arms. If you are the one who give the service to another person, do it out of the kindness of your heart and not think about “what am I going to get out of this” kind of motive. If you think like that you are not doing what Jesus want you to do; He wants you to follow Him and serve Him because you want to.

6. Pray It! Dearest Jesus, our Lord and our Savior. We pray that You give us hands like Yours, so that we can serve others like You. We know our hands can only do so little, but please let us serve and live for You. Amen.

WEEK B-L6 MARK 14:1-15:47

22

In today’s Gospel, Jesus institutes the Eucharist and creates a new covenant with God. He promises that those who follow and believe in Him will have eternal life. Jesus then takes up His cross and sacrifices His life for everyone. This scene shows how Jesus bore the weight of the world, and through His sacrifice not only was He transformed, but He saved the world from sin. This great love is seen in the Eucharist every week! How lucky!

Today’s Gospel is about the Passion of Jesus Christ. The priests and scribes make plans to arrest Jesus, after the Passover. As the priest plan, Jesus is washed with an expensive perfume. Jesus then announces before the Last Supper, that one of His disciples will be betray Him. Following the Last Supper, it is told that Peter will deny Jesus three times, before morning. Jesus then goes to pray in the garden at which point he is betrayed by Judas. Jesus is then brought before the high priest for judgement. As Peter is watching, he is almost caught and denies knowing Jesus three times. Jesus is then brought before Pontius Pilate, and then is sentenced to crucifixion by the people. Jesus is then beaten, before he begins to walk with the crucifix to Golgotha. He is then crucified at Golgotha and dies on the cross. Following His death, He then wrapped in cloth and taken to his tomb. Today’s Gospel exemplifies the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, for He loved the world so much that He was willing to die for it.

[

SACRIFICE ]

To offer or kill as a religious sacrifice. How fortunate are we that Jesus gave His life to save us all from sin? Often times we are just onlookers to others that bear a greater burden than we do. This whole entire Lenten season is about sacrifice. This week, think about what you gave up for Lent. Continue to practice giving up that one thing. Whether it be giving your time, or helping your parents at home. Write it on a piece of paper, and your experience with it and bring the paper in to share next week.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, You gave Your life and showed us how each person can use their talents to help others who carry a heavier burden than we do. We pray that You can give the strength to use our talents and help others see Your love and sacrifice in the Eucharist. Help us continue to sacrifice for others. Amen.

WEEK B-E1

JOHN 20: 1-9

On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

1. Understand It!

24

Tomb

A location, often a large vault, used to bury the dead.

Burial Cloths

The clothes or wrappings in which a body is buried.

Scripture

The sacred writings contained in the Bible.

2. Explore It! Jesus had recently died on the cross and placed in the tomb when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb to tend to Jesus. Yet when she arrived, she saw that the tomb was removed, probably thinking that someone had come to the tomb unwelcomed. When the other disciples were told of what happened, Peter and the disciple ran to the tomb. When they saw that Jesus was no longer there, they started to believe gradually that what Jesus had told them, that He would rise again on the third day, had come to happen.

3. CONNECT

IT!

The resurrection of Jesus is many things. It is an explosion of light to the world of what Jesus is; it links heaven and earth allowing us to have the opportunity to be with God one day. Yet above all else, it was an explosion of love, where a new world emerges because we are called to transform ourselves and the world we live in. The resurrection unites us with God and others, to live a life according to the Word of God. Pope Francis described it, “when His light illuminates the dark moments of our existence, and we are able to share it with others; when we know when to smile with those who smile, and weep with those who weep; when we accompany those who are sad and at risk of losing hope; when we recount our experience of Faith to those who are searching for meaning and happiness… and there – with our attitude, with our witness, with our life – we say “Jesus is Risen,” with our soul.”

4. LIVE IT!

JOYFULNESS

“Jesus is Risen!” This week, share your joyfulness with those around you. Give everyone you meet a smile and be helpful, so that you also bring a smile to others.

- the expression of happiness.

5. Remember It!

6. Pray It! Help us, O God, to do what we can as we remain alert, noticing the movement of Your Spirit. May we receive life as You offer it to us – even if in unexpected ways. Help us have joy from within, with Your love overflowing in us. Help us to share that joy to all we meet. Amen.

WEEK B-E2

JOHN 20:19-31

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”

1. Understand It! Midst

To be in the middle of.

Rejoiced

To feel or show great joy or delight.

Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

Retain

To continue to have something, to keep possession of.

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book.

Blessed

To be made holy, consecrated.

But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

Messiah

The promised deliverer.

Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe.” Thomas answered and said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

26

2. Explore It! As we enter John 20:19, the disciples huddle together for fear that they would be discovered by the Judeans as followers of Jesus Christ. Instead of allowing Jesus to guide their actions and thoughts, it is the world they live in that does and results in the fear the disciples have. Yet it is through the appearance of Jesus, breathing into them the Holy Spirit, that the disciples break through the fear to experience Jesus’ joy and peace. Thomas, one of the disciples, was not present when Jesus first appears and does not believe the other disciples when told that Jesus is alive. It is not until Jesus appears directly before Thomas does he finally believe.

3. Connect It! 4. LIVE IT! [ FAITH ] From the beginning following Jesus’ resurrection, we see different responses to Jesus’ rising from the dead. Thomas is one example of that, where he says that he would not believe that Jesus has risen unless he is able to put his finger in the nail mark in Jesus’ hands and his hand into Jesus’ side. Thomas puts conditions on what it will take for him to believe in Jesus’ resurrection. How often do we put conditions on our relationship with God? If God would do this for me, then I’ll be a better Catholic. If God would do that for me, then I’ll know God exists. When we establish how God should operate in our lives and when our faith is based on what we demand from God, we are like Thomas, placing conditions on God. Jesus Christ calls on us to allow Him to guide our life, to believe without seeing, and transform our life to be more like Him.

to have complete trust or confidence in someone or something Explore ways in which you can strengthen your faith. This week, keep a journal of “letters of Jesus.” Each day, write a short paragraph of how your day went, of your frustrations and happy moments. Share with God the people in your life and their needs. Seek God’s guidance on difficult decisions and ask Him to strengthen your faith.

5. REMEMBER IT! 6. Pray It! God our Father, You conquer the darkness of ignorance by the light of Your Word. Strengthen within our hearts the faith You have given us; let not temptation ever quench the fire that Your love has kindled within us. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

WEEK B-E3

LUKE 24:35-48

JESUS APPEARS TO HIS DISCIPLES IN JERUSALEM The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, "Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have." And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, "Have you anything here to eat?" They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. He said to them, "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled." Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, "Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things."

1. Understand It!

28

Disciples

A follower of certain teachings. For this Gospel reading, these were followers of Jesus.

Incredulous

Describes a person who at the time is unable to believe. In this reading, the disciples cannot believe their eyes that Jesus was there.

Repentance

The act of being sincerely sorry.

Witness

Someone who actually saw something important happen and their words are used as proof.

2. Explore It!

3. Connect It!

The Gospel reading for this week talked about the time when Jesus appeared before His disciples after His death and then resurrection. The disciples could not believe their eyes that Jesus was there before them because deep down in their hearts, some of them had doubts about Jesus’ words that He would rise from the dead. Jesus comforts them, asks for something to eat, and then tells them to remember that it was written in the Laws of Moses, in the prophets, and in the Psalms, that Christ had to suffer and rise on the third day, and that sins will be forgiven in His name. He also named them witnesses of His resurrection so they can teach it to others.

4. Live It! [ COURAGE ] Courage means to do something that you are afraid of and is hard to do. At first, the disciples were afraid to believe that Jesus had come back to life, but they believed it after Jesus showed them proof. You will meet others in life who will challenge your faith or you will have doubts of your own because sometimes it is hard to believe in God when there are bad things happening to you or those you care about. This is a good time to show courage by practicing your faith. Pray openly this week during your free time at school. Be kind to others, even to those you do not like, because you are following the teachings of Jesus. Show them that you are proud to be a Catholic.

6. Pray It!

The Gospel reading this week focused on doubt. Although some of the disciples had met Jesus in person after His resurrection, they did not truly believe that Jesus had come back to life. Jesus understands that people would not believe without proof; therefore, He appeared before the disciples to ensure that His disciples would believe and spread His teaching knowing that it is true. Jesus also reminded them that it was written before Jesus came to this world in the Laws of Moses that this would happen. You may face a lot of doubt in your life about your faith, and there will be others, either at school or those you meet, who will challenge your faith by telling you that God does not exist. Jesus has already shown us that God does exist, and that all His teachings are true. It is up to you to keep on believing His words, and spread them to others.

5. Remember It! ”These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written abut me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” (Luke 24:44)

Dear Jesus, thank you for saving us from our sins and showing us that we are loved. Please give us the courage to live our faith in according to Your teachings, and please continue to watch over us all. Amen.

JESUS IS THE GOOD SHEPHERD WEEK B-E4

JOHN 10:11-18

1. Understand It!

Jesus said: "I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father."

30

Shepherd

A person who takes care of a large group of sheep.

Flock

A large group of sheep.

2. Explore It! Today’s Gospel reading focused on Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He talked about the hired man, who does not care for his sheep and will run away when he sees a wolf coming. In this, Jesus talks about those who do not teach the truth about the Gospel and does not care for the people. It is also like how the Pharisees, although they believed in God, thought that not everyone is worthy of God’s love. Jesus protects His flock because they belong to Him and He loves them. His flock knows Him and loves Him. We are God’s flock of sheep, and He will protect us because He loves us and we are His children. Like His flock knows Him, we know Jesus and accepted His love so we will always be protected by Him. In comparison to the Pharisees, Jesus talked about those other sheep that are not of His flock, but He will also lead them. They will hear His voice and become part of the flock. Under the leadership of one shepherd, He will love us because we are all worthy of God’s love. In time, those who still do not accept God’s love will join us because they will see the truth in Jesus’ teachings.

3. Connect It!

4. Live It! [ GENEROSITY ]

This week, God wants us to know how Jesus is the Good Shepherd and loves us all, even those who are not of His flock. As our role model, Jesus teaches us to care and love His flock, like loving and caring for your family, friends, and even those who do not believe in God’s love. It can be hard to love and pray for everyone, especially those you do not like or those who do not like you. Still, you are a shepherd and your role model is Jesus. As Thieu Nhi members, we are called to “Hy Sinh,” (sacrifice). Let us all follow the examples of Jesus by living our motto. Show our care and pray for everyone so that we can be united again in God’s love.

5. Remember It!

Generosity means to be kind and giving to others. The Gospel this week talked about Jesus being the Good Shepherd, and how He not only cares for His own flock, but for those who are not yet His. Your life can be busy, so start small this week by first praying for someone who is mean to you, and then for someone who cares for you. If you can, do something nice for the one in school who usually does not have a lot of friends, and continue doing so to show them that everyone deserves to be cared for. Finally, do something nice for your family and friends by helping them with a task such as homework, or washing the dishes and cleaning up around the house.

“I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

6. Pray It! Dear Jesus, thank you for watching over us like the Good Shepherd that You are and protecting us against evil and sin. Please allow us to live our lives generously and the strength to watch over others and love them like how You love us. Amen.

WEEK B-E5

JOHN 15:1-8

Jesus said to his disciples: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit. You are already pruned because of the word that I spoke to you. Remain in me, as I remain in you. Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me will be thrown out like a branch and wither; people will gather them and throw them into a fire and they will be burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you. By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.”

1. Understand It!

32

Pruned

To cut or trim off dead or overgrown ranches.

Wither

To shrivel; fade; decay.

Glorified

To honor with praise, admiration, or worship.

2. Explore It! Jesus uses an analogy today of the vine and the branches. Mankind is the branch and God is the vine. When mankind truly listens to the word of God, mankind can bear fruit and become closer to God. Jesus reminds us that just as important, mankind must also allow God to enter their lives. Those who do not allow God to do so and live in accordance to His Word will not be welcomed in Heaven. Instead, they will be condemned.

3. Connect It! Jesus is reminding us how important it is to listen to Him and to follow Him. We are like plants that grow fruit. If we listen to Jesus, if we follow Him, we will bear fruit. What does it mean to bear fruit? That means we will do good things. We will do good deeds, be virtuous, and be good people. As a Thieu Nhi, as a member, we have to remember to follow Jesus and that means to follow His commands. If we want to be good, we need to follow our Youth-Leaders and our parents. Our YouthLeaders and our parents teach us about Jesus, and that is how we follow Him. If we do not listen to our Youth-Leaders and our parents when they teach us about Jesus, how can we follow Jesus? How can we bear fruit?

4. Live It! [ LOYALTY ] Loyalty means a feeling of support for something or someone. Be loyal to Jesus. Follow Him. Listen to what He has to say! This week, make sure that you remain in Jesus every day and unite with Him through holy communion daily.

5. Remember It! 6. Pray It! Lord Jesus, help us to follow You in everything we do. Help us to listen to Your commands so that we can bear fruit in our lives. Amen. (John 15:5)

JESUS ASKS US TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER WEEK B-E6

JOHN 15:9-17

Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.

1. Understand It!

34

Commandments

Divine rules given to us by God, the 10 Commandments.

Slaves

A person who is forced to obey another and works for them.

Master

A person who has people working for them in the form of a slave.

Appointed

To be chosen (designated) for a role.

2. Explore It! The Gospel this Sunday focuses on love. That love begins with the Father, flows through the Son, and then to His disciples. Jesus reminds His disciples that they must be obedient in keeping the commandments that God gave them for that love to remain. Yet the most important commandment is love itself: to love one another. Jesus choose the disciples to go out into the world and share the Good News, the commandments, and to share the message to love one another.

3. Connect It! The ultimate model of obedience and love is Jesus Christ Himself, who died in obedience to the Father for the love He had for mankind. Love requires us to make sacrifices for others, just as Jesus made the ultimate sacrifice for us. He chose each one of us to come into this world and to be faithful to the Commandments. Yet, it does not stop there. We must also “bear fruit” by sharing our love and faith to all those we encounter.

4. Live It! [ LOVE ] Love - doing good for others and have affection for them

Showing love can be done not only verbally, but also through our actions. This week, show your love to your parents and siblings by praying for them every day, helping your parents out with chores, and assisting your siblings what they need help with.

5. Remember It!

“This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.” (John 15:12)

6. Pray It! Lord Jesus, help us to love like You love. Help us to know that love is from God and that we need to love everyone. Teach us your love. Amen.

JESUS ASCENDS TO HEAVEN WEEK B-E7

MARK 16:15-20

He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents [with their hands], and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then the Lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God. But they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the word through accompanying signs.

1. Understand It!

Proclaim

36

To declare officially and publicly of something important.

Condemned

To express complete disapproval and sentence to a particular punishment.

Preached

To deliver a sermon to others, publicly proclaiming the Good News of all Jesus teachings.

2. Explore It! Jesus gives the disciples directions on what He is calling them to do: Go out and proclaim the Good News in the Gospel to all people. Jesus entrusted to the disciples to go out into the world to tell people the truth, for them to believe, and to be baptized to become one with the Church. Jesus also tells the disciples that those who do not believe will be condemned. After giving the disciples these directions, Jesus ascends into heaven to take His seat at the right of God the father.

3. Connect It! Jesus’ ascension to heaven signals the end of His earthly ministry. God the Father had sent His son into the world to save mankind, and now the Son was returning to the Father because Jesus had fulfilled that mission. Although Jesus has left this world to be with the Father, His message remains through the directions given to the disciples. As the disciples had carried out Jesus’ call to share the Good News and bring others to Christ, so too are we called to do the same. We are not only called to be good Christians, we are also called to share our faith and help others discover all that God does for us.

4. Live It! [ ENCOURAGEMENT ] Encouragement means to give someone support, confidence, or hope. Encouragement can come in many forms, may it be through verbal support or actions to convey support. Jesus gives His disciples encouragement through words and actions. This week, make an extra effort at school and at Thieu Nhi to give encouragement to your peers. Give positive encouragement and compliments to create a positive environment each day this week.

5. Remember It! “So then the lord Jesus, after he spoke to them, was taken up into heaven and took his seat at the right hand of God.” (Mark 16:19)

3. Connect It! My Dear Lord Jesus, You have given us strength and encouragement. We praise You for all You have done and given us. Help us also help others and give them encouragement. We know You are with us and will always be by our side to guide us through each day. Amen.

WEEK B-E8

JOHN 15:26-27; 16: 12-15 Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”

1. Understand It! Advocate

Someone who promotes or supports a person or a message.

Proceeds

To come after something or come from something.

Testify

To be a witness to something.

Declare

To state or announce something.

2. Explore It! Today’s Gospel reminds us about the important connection between God’s gifts of peace, forgiveness, and the role of the Holy Spirit. At that time, Jesus had recently died on the cross and the disciples were scared that the Jews would find them. Jesus greets His disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions His disciples to continue the work that He began. He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, strengthening their faith, and sends them to continue His work of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins. 38

3. Connect It!

Pentecost is sometimes called the birthday of the Church. The Gospel for Pentecost reminds us that the Church begins with the command to forgive. Within the family, the church, we learn how to forgive and how to accept forgiveness. The gift of the Holy Spirit enables us to do both. As you gather together as a family, sit quietly for a few minutes, talk together about how Jesus gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help us in the work of forgiveness and to bring us peace.

4. Live It! [ GRATITUDE ] To be thankful, appreciative, readiness to show a return of kindness. There are many things to be grateful for, like being able to sit in class and read this lesson compared to those in less fortunate situations. What are some of the things you show gratitude towards? Each night, make a small list of what you are thankful for and why. While sharing in class, reflect on what others are grateful for and see what blessings you possibly took for granted!

5. Remember It!

Lord, we are blessed with the life You have given us, and the community of friends and family that surround us. We pray that our actions are reflections of our gratitude for You and all those before us that made sacrifices for the blessings we enjoy now. Amen.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit WEEK B- MOST HOLY TRINITY

Matthew 28: 16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have

NATIONS: People with a common history, culture, language in one area COMMANDED: To give an order BEHOLD: To see, observe

2. EXPLORE IT! Today is a special day that calls our attention to the central mysteries of our faith and to consider what we believe about God, who revealed Himself to us in the trinity, one God in three Persons. Throughout the scripture, many of the most important events happen on a mountaintop. They see Jesus, worship Him, and yet they doubt Him at the same time. Jesus approaches and commissions the disciples to baptize and teach others. These are tasks for which Jesus previously prepared His disciples for: to go to all nations, teaching, and baptizing others. 40

As Jesus departed from this world, He shared with the disciples the power to “make disciples of all nations.” He taught His disciples to invite others to share in the life of the blessed Trinity by sharing the gift of baptism. This continues to be the mission of the church. Each of us who has been baptized shares in the life of the blessed trinity and shares in the Church’s mission of inviting others to share in God’s love.

5. REMEMBER IT!

4. LIVE IT! [ PERSEVERANCE] PERSEVERANCE: To continue to do something in the face of hardship and stress. Sometimes it is hard to continue at something because of how we feel, its difficulty, or the time required to follow through. The act of perseverance has blessings people do not recognize, like determination, sacrifice, and even faith! Each night, think of one thing you had persevered that day, earlier in the week, or even in the past year! Discuss during class to see if there are ways you can find help or a new way of looking at the situation!

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit” (Mathew 28:19)

6. PRAY IT! Lord, Thank you for the blessings of patience, courage, and faith to allow us to persevere through the greatest of troubles and hardships in our lives. We pray to keep the hope of a better day through our smiles, kind words, and optimistic thoughts. Amen.

Jesus is the Eucharist WEEK B-MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST

MARK 14: 12-16, 22-26

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples said to him, "Where do you want us to go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He sent two of his disciples and said to them, "Go into the city and a man will meet you, carrying a jar of water. Follow him. Wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, 'The Teacher says, "Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"' Then he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready. Make the preparations for us there." The disciples then went off, entered the city, and found it just as he had told them; and they prepared the Passover. While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, "This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. Amen, I say to you, I shall not drink again the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." Then, after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

2. EXPLORE IT! In the Gospel, the disciples prepared in advance for the sacrament of the Eucharist to take place. The disciples followed Jesus’ direction to find the location and prepare the space so that upon Jesus’ arrival, the blessing could take place. Jesus took bread, blessed the bread, broke the bread, and shared it with His disciples. Similar words and actions follow as Jesus shares the chalice with His disciples. This bread now shared is Jesus’ own body. Those who drink from the chalice are invited to share in a new covenant, which will be sealed by Jesus’ own blood.

3. CONNECT IT! In today’s Gospel, it reminds us that the Eucharist is a memorial of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. We believe that Jesus is truly present to us in the elements of bread and wine. Each time we celebrate this sacrament, we prepare for the Kingdom of God. When you prepare for dinner, are there routines you go through? Who sets up the table? Who usually cooks? What day is for what particular food? Today’s Gospel is similar to what you might have experienced at home, school, or even in Thiếu Nhi.

Notice how Jesus instructed His disciples to prepare for the Passover meal? All meals required planning and preparation. We all share in the tradition of preparation when we go to mass as well, from the priest preparing a homily to the choir selecting and practicing before mass! In what ways are we supposed to prepare for mass? This includes fasting and being without mortal sin.

4. LIVE IT! [ THANKFULNESS ] THANKFULNESS: Aware of a benefit, to be grateful, expressive of gratitude. Preparation can take a long time. We take for granted what others do that help make our lives easier, especially with our mass example earlier. Each night, think about who in your life prepares for their day, week, or even month that impacts you. Reflect and write why you are thankful for what they do to make the day fruitful for you.

5. REMEMBER IT! While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is my body.” (Mark 14:22)

6. PRAY IT! Lord, We are thankful for those who sacrifice their time, and energy to prepare themselves each day, each week, each month. We pray that we can recognize even the smallest bits of effort from those around us to make life better for others, and build the courage to say “thank you” for all they do. Amen
