JOHN 10:11-18

1. Understand It!

Jesus said: "I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father."

2. Explore It! Today’s Gospel reading focused on Jesus as the Good Shepherd. He talked about the hired man, who does not care for his sheep and will run away when he sees a wolf coming. In this, Jesus talks about those who do not teach the truth about the Gospel and does not care for the people. It is also like how the Pharisees, although they believed in God, thought that not everyone is worthy of God’s love. Jesus protects His flock because they belong to Him and He loves them. His flock knows Him and loves Him. We are God’s flock of sheep, and He will protect us because He loves us and we are His children. Like His flock knows Him, we know Jesus and accepted His love so we will always be protected by Him. In comparison to the Pharisees, Jesus talked about those other sheep that are not of His flock, but He will also lead them. They will hear His voice and become part of the flock. Under the leadership of one shepherd, He will love us because we are all worthy of God’s love. In time, those who still do not accept God’s love will join us because they will see the truth in Jesus’ teachings.

4. Live It! [ GENEROSITY ]

This week, God wants us to know how Jesus is the Good Shepherd and loves us all, even those who are not of His flock. As our role model, Jesus teaches us to care and love His flock, like loving and caring for your family, friends, and even those who do not believe in God’s love. It can be hard to love and pray for everyone, especially those you do not like or those who do not like you. Still, you are a shepherd and your role model is Jesus. As Thieu Nhi members, we are called to “Hy Sinh,” (sacrifice). Let us all follow the examples of Jesus by living our motto. Show our care and pray for everyone so that we can be united again in God’s love.

5. Remember It!

Generosity means to be kind and giving to others. The Gospel this week talked about Jesus being the Good Shepherd, and how He not only cares for His own flock, but for those who are not yet His. Your life can be busy, so start small this week by first praying for someone who is mean to you, and then for someone who cares for you. If you can, do something nice for the one in school who usually does not have a lot of friends, and continue doing so to show them that everyone deserves to be cared for. Finally, do something nice for your family and friends by helping them with a task such as homework, or washing the dishes and cleaning up around the house.

“I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

6. Pray It! Dear Jesus, thank you for watching over us like the Good Shepherd that You are and protecting us against evil and sin. Please allow us to live our lives generously and the strength to watch over others and love them like how You love us. Amen.
