What about the earthquakes? Wellington City Council have signed off our use of the Fair site. The deconstruc?on of 61 Molesworth Street is outside the Fair site, but we will be upda?ng stallholders and fairgoers about the road closures etc.
The Fair Health & Safety Plan has clear guidance on what to do in an earthquake or other emergency and how to evacuate the site if necessary. Volunteers are provided with this informa?on as part of their role briefing and instruc?ons are available on the day.
Do you have a ute or trailer?
We need a second vehicle and driver to help transport the school stall materials from School to the Fair site, star?ng at 7am and finishing about 9am. Other volunteers will help load/ unload, but some liIing will be required. Can you help? Contact
[email protected] or call Nicola on 973 5494.
#ThrowBackThursday Did you know? • AIer Thorndon was severed by the motorway construc?on in the 1960s, the Thorndon Society was formed in 1973 to protect and enhance the heritage and character of the remaining residen?al areas and to restore a sense of community. • The Society established Thorndon Fair in 1977 to showcase the suburb with a parade and entertainment in the Botanic Gardens. • Since 1979 the Fair has been held annually, closing Tinakori Road from Bowen to Hill Streets. • Thorndon School has run the Fair since 1983, and it’s grown to include more of Tinakori Road and Hill Street as well. • Volunteers have always been an important part of the Thorndon Fair – check out these photos from the mid-‐90s (you might spot a few poli?cians and a visit from the man in red).
Thorndon residents – check your mailbox for the latest Thorndon Society newsle9er and a history of the Fair's early years. Thanks to Bre9 Mackay for his research.
What does it take to run Thorndon Fair? Hard work, energy and enthusiasm!
The Thorndon Fair CommiVee have been busily planning the Fair since our first mee?ng in April. Whether it’s alloca?ng 350 stall spaces, scheduling performers, recrui?ng volunteers, pos?ng on Facebook or ordering the portaloos, these are all tasks that go into making Thorndon Fair a fun, safe and successful fundraising event.
So a huge thank you to the Fair CommiVee: Kate, Nicola, Margaret, Barbara, Liz, Liora, Karen, Phil, Dave, Jessie, Alison, Alistair, Carol and Lily. And a big shout out to our Team Leaders too.
Now it’s your turn – just 2 hours of volunteering on Fair day helps put all the planning into ac?on!
