Expressions of thanks The family of Marina Crummey would like to take this opportunity to thank her church family for the many acts of kindness that were shown during her illness and recent passing. The prayers, food, cards and personal visits were a great comfort to her. We are also grateful for the reception that was provided in honor of our mother after the service. This is a wonderful ministry that blesses the family more than you could ever know. You are truly a wonderful, loving and caring church. Thank you again for all that you have done. God Bless You, William (Hawk), Angela, Dianne & Regina

MARK YOUR CALENDAR! Matters of Life and Death: An End of Life Seminar Join us in the fellowship hall on Sunday, January 21, 2018, as we host a panel of professionals in the areas of law, health, finances, and faith. We will discuss aging with dignity and peace of mind, where “all is well with my soul” is possible. For this possibility to become a reality, we must prepare ourselves with information. We must know what our options are before we become overwhelmed by illness and grief, preventing us from making wise decisions.

FROM THE PASTOR Now that January is upon us, we have all been given a brand new gift from God—the gift of a new year filled with opportunities and possibilities to grow and mature as followers of Jesus Christ. The start of a new year is typically when we make resolutions and new commitments to live healthier lives— exercising more, eating healthier foods, losing weight, getting adequate rest, seeing the doctor for an annual physical. But the start of a new year is also an ideal time to reflect on your relationship with God. Are you close to God or do you feel distant from God? Do you pray regularly, read the Bible, and practice compassion and patience with others? If not, can you make new commitments to these tried and true practices of Christian faith? Are there new practices in faith that you’d like to try in order to become more like Jesus: silence, serving others, singing in a choir, generosity, speaking up for what is right and just? As excited as you might be about that new gadget or toy or article of clothing you received for Christmas, the newness of those material items will soon fade. Likewise, a new commitment to following Jesus and living more like him in the new year is prone to being derailed when the newness wears off and we get distracted. When the newness wears off—a few days from now, maybe a few weeks from now—I encourage you to continue those practices of faith, even if you don’t feel like it and even if you don’t sense God speaking to you and guiding you. The lives of countless Christians over the centuries tells us that we grow in faith and become more like Jesus when we develop spiritual habits and practices over time instead of always looking for the newest and most exhilarating spiritual experience. A new year is indeed a great time to make a fresh commitment as a follower of Jesus. But don’t let the first week of January be the only time you make a new commitment this year. Instead, let every day be a new opportunity, a fresh start, a clean slate. Be inspired by these words from the writer of the Old Testament book of Lamentations: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:2223). Happy New Year! David
