In preparation for the Bicentennial Celebration, the Bicentennial Committee decided to have an anthem commissioned for our church. After some discussion, David Schwoebel was commissioned to write an anthem based on the text Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” The dedication of the anthem reads, In celebration of the bicentennial of Edenton Baptist Church, Edenton, NC, and in memory of Mary Smith, organist for over 30 years and Corinne Thorud, choir member for over 75 years. This Sunday, the choir will premier this piece under the direction of David Schwoebel. This is a high honor to premier the anthem with the composer who wrote the anthem. The choir has been diligently working on it for the past several weeks. Even more exciting is the fact that the anthem has already been accepted by Beckenhorst Press for publication. So, in the very near future, Edenton Baptist Church along with David Schwoebel will give churches all across the world the opportunity to sing this powerful text in a whole new setting. What a gift! David Schwoebel is Minister of Music/Composer in Residence at Derbyshire Baptist Church in Richmond, VA. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Voice and Organ Performance from McKendree College in Lebanon, IL and a Master of Church Music with an emphasis in Composition from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX. Prior to arriving at Derbyshire Baptist in 1997, David served churches in Illinois, Alabama, and Georgia. At Derbyshire, he oversees a music program consisting of nine choral groups, five handbell choirs, an Orff ensemble, a 28-piece orchestra and brass ensemble. David also participated in the development and release of Celebrating Grace Hymnal as a member of the Supplemental Music Resource Committee and was the musical arranger for March 2010 Premier Workshop Concerts when the hymnal was released in Atlanta, GA. There will be other special music events occurring over the next couple of weeks pertaining to the life of the Music Ministry within our Church. Please come and celebrate these wonderful events with us! Edenton Baptist Church has a great history of music and worship. Help us to continue to share the gift of music with those in our congregation and community. Soli Deo Glora, Michael
