About Printing March 31, 2011 Copyright © 2011 by David M. Kern – All Rights Reserved Important Copyright Notification In order to provide a thorough analysis of the so-called Fact of Evolution, this book includes many short quotations from a large number of experts in a wide variety of technical fields. These quotations are copyright protected by the sources documented in the endnotes (see the "Notes and References” section located at the end of each chapter). I believe that these quotations fall under the Fair Use limitation of US Copyright Law (http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html). However, Fair Use has a very vague definition and copyright violations are subject to legal penalties. An About Copyright document with additional information on this topic is posted on the Fact of Evolution website. Where I am quoting a larger amount of copyrighted material, I have obtained permission to reproduce this material on my website. My use of this copyrighted material does not imply any endorsement of the views presented in this document. Any permission I have been granted to reproduce this copyrighted material applies only to my specific use. I gratefully acknowledge the various sources who have granted me permission to reproduce their copyrighted material. Each chapter of this book has an Acknowledgment section that lists any specific permission statements that I have received. The Acknowledgment section is located directly before the "Notes and References" section. My major goal in writing this book is to seek the truth about a very complex technical topic. My motivation for quoting expert sources is to pass their words onto my readers with as little distortion as possible. However, copyright laws limit the amount of context that can be included in such quotes. This can also distort the meaning of a passage. I do not wish to distort the opinion of anybody that I am quoting. If you believe that I have distorted the meaning of one of your quotes, please contact me so that we can discuss this issue and negotiate a solution. A form for contacting me is located on this webpage: http://sites.google.com/site/factofevolution/contact. If you believe that I am reproducing your copyrighted material outside the bounds of Fair Use guidelines, please contact me to discuss this issue. I will attempt to resolve any copyright violations that I may have committed in a pleasant and prompt manner. Terms and Conditions This document is covered by a US copyright and it should not be sold in any format. An About Copyright document describes the “Usage Terms” for all documents that are posted on the Fact of Evolution website (http://sites.google.com/site/factofevolution/).

List of Topics Will there ever be a print version? Black and White Printing Self Print Options Will there ever be a print version? The book is structured so that interested readers can read it on-line and/or print out desired chapters (or the whole book). At this point in time, there isn’t a real good reason for me to publish a print version. If my website happens to attract a reasonable audience that is interested in a published print version, I will explore that option. One issue that complicates producing a print version is the issue of permission to quote copyrighted material. In order to provide a skeptical commentary on the Fact of Evolution, this book quotes copyrighted material from a wide variety of technical experts. Any permission I have to include these quotes applies only to my non-profit website. I believe that directly quoting the words of technical experts significantly increases the strength of the arguments I make in this book. If I published a print version, it might be impossible for me to obtain permission to use these quotes. In my judgment, not being able to quote this material directly would drastically reduce the impact of my arguments. My primary desire is to provide my readers with the exact wording used by technical experts so that they can judge for themselves whether or not the Theory of Evolution carries the certainty implied by the word fact. This desire has led me away from publishing a print version – at least for the time being. Return to List of Topics Black and White Printing The only color used in the documents posted on this website is for hyperlinks. Because black and white printing is typically cheaper than color printing, I recommend printing these documents in black and white. Return to List of Topics Self Print Options A variety ways exist for a user to print this book themselves. The book consists of a about 260 pages (including Title Page and Table of Contents). To print my own draft copy, I took the time to print each chapter double-sided (~125 pages) on my HP-PSC. I then used a 3-hole punch to install the printed book in two cheap Tang-Clip binders. I estimate the rough cost to print the book yourself and install it in a binder to be in the range of $10-15. This estimate is based on the following calculations: • I estimated the cost per printed page at about $.05/page (using only black ink). This assumes that the cost of the ink1 is about $.03/page and the cost of the paper2 is

about $.02/sheet.3 The ink-cost for printing 250 pages is then about $7.50 and the paper cost for 125 sheets is about $2.50. This gives a total print cost of about $10. • A wide variety of 3-hole binding options is available in the $1-$3 range. Two Tang-Clip covers are probably the cheapest binding option. In relatively small quantities, typical office product vendors sell these for less than a $1.4 If you don’t own a printer, there are various on-line print services that are available. These services will print and bind documents that you download. Most people have access to a local store where the printouts can be picked up. Two examples of common on-line print vendors are Staples and Federal Express.5 The draft version I downloaded to test the Staples website was 250 pages long. I selected B/W Double-Sided Printing using 24# Standard Letter Paper. The following list summarizes the various prices I received for printing/binding: • No Binding = $21.88/copy ($16.87/copy for quantity 10) • 3-Hole Punch = $23.13/copy ($18.12/copy for quantity 10) • Classic Binding = $24.97/copy ($19.98/copy for quantity 10) • Coil or Comb Binding = $25.37/copy ($20.36/copy for quantity 10) The above costs can be broken down into a number of categories – printing cost, paper-cost, and binding-cost. Staples website provides this itemized cost list for those categories: • Print cost of $.06/sheet for 1 copy, $.08/sheet for 10 copies • Paper cost of $.02/sheet – 125 sheets of paper (250 pages DS) = $2.50 • $3.00 for classic binding, $3.40 for coil/comb binding The cost for printing 249 pages (Double-Sided, B/W, 20# paper) from the Fed-Ex website (a slightly different draft) are similar to the cost from Staples website: • No-Binding = $23.00/copy • Comb-Binding = $25.99/copy ($15.79/copy with 10 copies) • Coil-Binding = $26.99/copy • 3-Hole Punch = $27.48/copy • 1”, 3-Hole Binder = $30.47/copy Each vendor supports a number of printing/binding options, so it is hard to do an exact comparison. Roughly speaking, I could get a better single-copy price from Staples, and a better 10-copy price from Federal Express. But I have not tried to print my book with either vendor, so I cannot offer a recommendation. Another option for on-line printing would be the services that offer to print and bind PHD theses. One service that I am evaluating for myself is called Thesis on Demand.6 An on-line quote for printing 10 copies of 261 pages was about $20/each. For printing a single copy, the cost was about $24.
