POPCORN! POPCORN! SELL YOUR POPCORN! Show and Sell is coming to an end (October 12, 2012) and the Soaring Eagle District is doing great! As a district we have already surpassed last year's totals for Show and Sell sales. Using Fall 2011 total figures the unit that had the greatest total popcorn for Show and Sell was Pack 118 with a total of $6,720.00. For overall total popcorn sales Troop 59 came in with a grand total of $11,769.00. There were 35 boys who sold popcorn for Troop 59 which gave them an average of $336.25 per scout. With a 36% commission that would be $121.05 to keep per scout. Popcorn sales can help a unit like a Cub Pack to earn most of their annual money for Pack events and awards. For many Troops, popcorn sales usually help the individual Scout earn money for camp and camping equipment. Some Scouts have used the money for Jamboree. (Continued on page 2)

Be Prepared. Most of us know that the motto of the Boy Scouts is to ―Be Prepared.‖ “Be Prepared for what?” someone once asked Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell, the founder of Scouting. Lord Baden-Powell replied: “Why, for any old thing!”

1 Roundtable, 7 pm

Every year we see numerous examples of Scouts who have used the skills they learned in Scouting to save the lives of others. In just the past year around 150 boys were awarded one of the BSA heroism awards. Among these were: Nick

Popcorn Sales—Cont. Take order sales will start October 12, 2012. Order forms will be able at October's Roundtable meeting. I'll be there to distribute forms and answer questions from kernels and/or unit leaders. The picture on the front page is of a Scout from Troop 59 at a Show and Sell at Bel Air. For more Troop 59 pictures go to the Troop 50 Facebook page (photo album "pies and water fight") to see pictures of our Scoutmaster and several ASM's getting pies to the face as a prize for boys who sold popcorn. For every $200.00 in popcorn sales the Scout sold he also earned a pie to throw. Keep the popcorn popping, Soli Garcia Soaring Eagle District Kernel (The picture to the right shows Scouts from Troop 007 at their Show and Sell in front of the Laguna Safeway on Friday, September 21st.)

Elk Grove Veterans Day Parade—Sunday, November 11, 2012 Mark your calendars and get your Packs and Troops ready for the annual Elk Grove Veterans Day Parade to be held Sunday, November 11th at 11:00am. Groups should arrive by 10:15am. The Veterans Day Parade is a high profile event and I'm encouraging as many units as possible to come and participate. It's our opportunity to show the community how many of us are part of the Scouting movement. Its also a great way to honor America and America's veterans. The marching route is about a mile and a half long (so even Tigers can participate) and participants are treated to a hot dog, soda and chips at the end of the route in Elk Grove Regional Park. It's really a lot of fun! Come on out and help us honor America and America's veterans by marching in the Elk Grove Veterans Day Parade. For units that are interested, please contact Kyle Monson at [email protected] for the registration form. Yours in Scouting, KYLE MONSON District Chair

Thompson, 13, of Troop 401 in Auburn, Washington, who was awarded the National Medal of Honor for saving a swimmer who had been knocked unconscious by an oar while swimming in a lake. Another was Alex Huggins, 15, of Cape Girardeau, Missouri who took control of his mother’s van when she suffered a diabetic emergency while driving down a highway in a road construction zone--he guided the vehicle to a safe stop and then treated his mother’s diabetic emergency. Two others a little closer to home included Bryce and Bryant Nuevert of Pack 198 in Lodi, California—these two boys saved their father’s life when he was having a heart attack (they were in Costa Rica at the time)—they treated their father for shock and summoned help (in halting Spanish) from the local authorities. These are but a few of the many Scouts who have used the skills they learned in Scouting to help others every year. But being prepared is not just about heroically saving lives. Lord Baden-Powell founded the Scouting movement, in part, to prepare young men to be able to handle any situation they might face in life. He wanted them to be prepared to be productive citizens, to be ready to spread cheer by helping others without expectation of reward, and to be prepared in mind, body and spirit for any challenges they might meet in the future. As I’ve often reminded adult leaders in our District and beyond: “We are building young men and women of character to lead our nation in the years ahead.” The eleventh edition of the Boy Scout Handbook summed it up this way: ―Be prepared for life - to live happily and without regret, knowing that you have done your best. That's what the Scout motto means.‖ So…Be Prepared! Yours in Scouting! KYLE MONSON Soaring Eagle District Chair

NEW—Nova Award Program Would you like a new way to recruit Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts and Venturers? Is retention sometimes a problem? Do you want to create a diverse unit? BSA has the newest program to address these issues and help Scouts be "Prepared for life". Even as our schools are cutting their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math programs, BSA is stepping up efforts to introduce boys to STEM related activities and help them look at potential careers in STEM through the new Nova award program. There are more than 30 different Merit Badges that qualify toward the Nova awards for the Boy Scouts! Boys earn a Nova patch for completing their first STEM related investigation, then can earn up to three Pi symbol awards to go on the patch as they continue meeting the requirements for different areas of interest within the Nova award program. Another award, the Super Nova Award, rewards more indepth investigation of the STEM related areas. The medal earned is different for each area of scouting and is named after a famous contributer to Science, Technology, Engineeering and Mathamatics. In October's Cub Scout Breakout, the Nova Award Program will be introduced. For all other programs, Nova Award program books for each area of scouting can be purchased at our local scout shop and/or you can visit this link for more info: http:// www.scouting.org/stem.aspx . Incorporating Nova and Super Nova awards into your current scouting program can take your program to new heights! Page 3

Elk Grove Stake Merit Badge Clinic The merit badge clinic sponsored by the Elk Grove Stake on three consecutive Saturday's beginning August 25th was successful in drawing scouts from many units in the Soaring Eagle District. The seven merit badges offered were the three Citizenship badges, Community, Nation, and World along with Communications, Crime Prevention, Fire Safety, and First Aid. Sixty five scouts took the time to take part in these merit badge classes. Robert Raddigan and Julie Rider helped present Fire Safety. (See Julie teaching the hands on approach to using a fire extinguisher with the PASS method in the picture on the left) Scouts gave oral reports with charts and notes for Citizenship in the Community merit badge class with Jim Butler as the counselor. (See the guest speaker in Jim Butler's Citizenship in the Community class in the picture on the right). Brent Carter's First Aid class did hands on demonstrations of transporting the injured. Many thanks to the counselor's for taking the time to make this available to the units of Soaring Eagle District. Special thanks to all the counselors, Jim Butler, Lisa Carroll, Larry Jensen, Bryan MacDonald, Rick Busath, Brent Carter, Robert Raddigan and Julie Rider!! October Theme: Responsibility—”Jungle of Fun” Den Chief teaches Wolf Cubs about U.S. Flag ceremony Troop 59 Boy Scout Tanner Joyce lead Pack 179 Wolf Scouts from Den 6 in the flag raising ceremony at Edna Batey Elementary School. Tanner’s role as Den Chief is to help teach and model the ways of scouting. "He brings tremendous value to our den because the boys look up to him as a role model, and he makes scouting cool. His presence also motivates the boys to stick with scouting and bridge up to Boy Scouts," says Andy Barbusca, Den 6 Leader. The boys learned that raising the flag is not as easy as it looks and folding the flag correctly takes a lot of practice. Salute! Pictured are Christopher Barbusca, Gabriel Quihuiz, Nathan Moore, Garrett Winuk (Assistant Denner), Jackson Bass and Armando Lewall, and Tanner Joyce. For more pictures, see page 11.
