Secrets of Hope BY PASTOR JEFF BROWN

Pray...

After picking some people to pray for, let's pray!  Praying  includes listeningwaiting quietly to hear what God might  be telling us.   Maybe He will bring another person to our  attention that we should be praying for.   Maybe He will  inspire   us   with   a   way   to   reach   out   to   the   folks   we   are  praying for, a kindness we can show them, a contact we can  make with them, a note or a phone call.  Make a prayer list,  Often, when the church does evangelism, we don't do much  and pray without ceasing.  preparation.     We   schedule   some   meetings,   send   out  brochures, and hope and pray that people will come.   We  disobey the law of the harvest: running our plow, followed  immediately by our planter, followed immediately by our  fertilizer spreader, and finally followed immediately by our  combine harvester.   On September 8, we will begin a Revival/Week of Prayer  called Secrets of Hope.  We are bringing in a special guest  speaker, Pastor Dan Serns of the Richardson, TX, Seventh day Adventist Church.   We will have meetings each night  for   one   week   with   a   special   health   feature:   Secrets   of  Healthy Living.

This   year   for   Secrets   of   Hope,   we   are   challenging   each  member to invite at least one guest to the meetings.  We're  challenging you to Pick, Pray, and Serve.

Pick...

Jesus saw, in each person that crossed His path, a candidate  for heaven, a potential citizen of the kingdom, a possible  brother   or   sister   of   His.     Sometimes   I   don't   even  notice  other people as I pass by.   We're asking each member to  think and pray about coworkers, family, friends, neighbors  and   pick   at   least   three   to   pray   for.     Elder   Robert  Folkenberg,   Sr.,   says,   "Pray   for   three   people,   out   loud,  every day."   Do you believe in prayer?   I do.   It is God's  plan   to   grant   us   blessings   in   response   to   our   prayers.  Would it be a blessing if "each one won one?"  We would  double the size of our church.   I have visited each adult  Sabbath School class and asked people to pray, and will  continue   visiting   small   groups   in   our   church   and  challenging   each   group   to   pray   for   as   many   people   as  possible.  We want to compile a list of all the names of the  people we are praying for and have an allnight prayer vigil  about a month before the meetings.

We should keep in mind this beautiful quote:  "Christ’s method alone will give true success in reaching   the   people.   The   Saviour   mingled   with   men   as   one   who   desired   their   good.   He   showed   His   sympathy   for   them,   ministered to their needs, and won their confidence. Then   He bade them, “Follow Me.”  There is need of coming close to the people by personal   effort.  If  less  time  were  given  to  sermonizing,  and  more   time were spent in personal ministry, greater results would   be seen. The poor are to be relieved, the sick cared for, the   sorrowing   and   the   bereaved   comforted,   the   ignorant   instructed,   the   inexperienced  counseled.   We   are   to  weep   with those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice."

          ~Ministry of Healing, p. 143

Serve... Jesus said,

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,   but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."  Mark 10:43

Some of us have read and are very impressed with the book  How to Grow an Adventist Church, in which Russell Burrill  writes of the "extended congregation."   He says that each  member   can   probably   identify   six   or   eight   unchurched  friends   and   family   members.     These   people   are   already  connected   to   existing   church   members.     We   should   be  intentional about reaching these individuals.   May God lead us and may His Spirit inspire us as we   Pick  some of those unchurched "preAdventists", Pray daily and  intently   for   them,   and  Serve  them   as   we   build   closer  relationships and seek for opportunities to invite them to  Secrets of Hope.

Quiet Ministries BY SUE BRUCE Many questions have been asked about Quiet Ministries. To  clarify, Quiet Ministries are projects that can be worked on  at home and then donated to a nonprofit organization.  Examples include:  Little Dresses for Africa  More info at nancy'snotions.con  or littledressesfor africa.org/blog/. Pattern available.  1 Million Pillowcase Challenge Donate to Children's  Hospital, Hatch's House, Ronald McDonald's House,  Women's Shelters, etc.  AllPeopleQuilt.com/millionpillowcases. Pattern available.  Bookmarks  Bible   verses   to   encourage   and   to   witness.  Courtesy of Brenda Walsh.  Project Linus Blankets and Quilts for Children's Hospitals.  Hats from the Heart  Knit, sew, crochet hats for cancer  patients.   Mary   Ellen   Locher   Cancer   Center,   Memorial  Hospital.

I was incredibly blessed by this program as was everyone  Sweaters For Kids Guide Posts Magazine  else   present.     The   class   listened  to  seminars,   visited  the  East   Ridge   SDA   church,   and   went   doortodoor   in   East  Patterns,   limited   supplies   of   yarn   and   fabric   available.  Ridge.   It was encouraging and reviving to us who were  Contact Sue Bruce with any questions. already highly interested in soulwinning, and I believe that  all   of   the   participants   were   itching   to   share   what   they  learned with their  local  churches.    We  are  excited  about  putting our lessons learned to work at the Apison church.

SAU Scholarship Award

Karen Glassford, a member of our church, won an award at  Southern Adventist University.  "Top Achiever Scholarship  Award"   as   mentioned   in   the   Spring   2012   issue   of  "Reaching Out” a biannual publication of the School of  Religion.

Apison Adventure Camp BY ZACK PAYNE Spending this summer directing Apison Adventure Camp  has   truly   been   a   blessing!     Our   first   week   we   had   an  average   of   3   children,   our   open   house   week   yielded   an  average   of   about   50,   and   these   final   weeks   we've   been  averaging around 10 to 15.  We've even seen nonAdventists  from the community come through the program, which is a  great thing to see as one of the main reasons we decided to  have this camp is to be a blessing to the community.   It's  been   amazing   to   see   how   God   has   worked   through   the  program and through the staff who have such a passion for  working with kids.   You can see Him in the staff as they  play with the kids and deal with issues.

Apison SDA Church and School Renovation Project Phase

Project

Cost

1A

CHURCH ROOF REPLACEMENT Will use architectural shingles and we’ve selected x company. Their bid is $34,100, but as they remove the existing shingles we expect to find damage that they will repair at an additional cost.

1B

PARKING LOT BINDER PAVING $35,000 Parking Lot Binder Paving – We have already laid gravel as a base for the parking lot; this “binder paving” is a base coat of blacktop, which will have painted lines. After the base coat is used for a period of time, we will add a final coat (see Phase 5).

$80,000

TOTAL PHASE 1: EXTERIOR

$115,000.00

2A

ARCHITECT Drawings and blueprints are required for each phase of construction (except for Phase 5). The architect will provide blueprints for all of our renovation and it is important to have these before we get into the phases any further.

$33,000

2B

CONTRACTOR & PERMITS The cost of each phase does not include contractor fees and permits; these are listed here as one lump sum. We will probably allocate these fees to the various phases rather than trying to raise these funds before construction begins.

$35,000

2C

CONTINGENCIES While we never plan to overspend our budget, it is wise to allow for the inevitable unexpected costs.

$28,000

TOTAL PHASE 2: FEES

$96,000.00

3A

STAIR REMODEL FOR UPPER CLASSROOM EGRESS Remodel stairs to second floor above library. Due to fire code restrictions we cannot now fully utilize the second floor. This project provides legal fire egress for two additional classrooms.

$17,000

3B

NEW HVAC FOR UPSTAIRS Currently the entire upstairs is tied into the sanctuary heating and airconditioning (HVAC) system—so it’s too hot or cold. This project provides a dedicated HVAC unit for the upstairs.

$19,000

3C

FAMILY BATHROOM AND WEST SANCTUARY EXIT $14,000 Adds a new bathroom for families (parents with small children). The emergency exit from the end of the hallway (by the baptismal changing room, where the deacons and platform participants gather) needs handrails that meet fire code and a concrete pad (that meets fire code) at the bottom.

3D

ENTRANCE: FOYER & HALLWAY CEILINGS, MAIN ENTRY DOORS, $35,000 PAINTING, FLOORING To provide a more attractive first impression and entrance to the church building. New entrance doors will be glass, to add more light and to create a friendlier appearance.

TOTAL PHASE 3: TOTAL MAIN CHURCH (LESS SANCTUARY)

Total

$85,000.00 continued on page 6

August/September 2012

Apison SDA Church and School Renovation Project, continued 4A

SABBATH SCHOOL WING: WEST END FIRE ESCAPE $48,000 Concrete/ brick fire escape at end of hall beyond Primary Sabbath School classroom. Current fire escape does not meet code and is dangerous. We will need to look at how this impacts the outside appearance of the church (facing the intersection of Bates Rd and Parkerson Rd.).

4B

CENTRAL STAIRS, RE-DO HALLWAYS, ADD SIDEWALK; EXPAND JUNIOR ROOM; RE-SIZE MAIN FLOOR CLASSROOMS The purpose here is to create larger Sabbath School rooms for our children’s divisions. Replace main stairs to lower floor – These do not meet current fire code, and we will add an additional exit at the base of these stairs. Project includes a larger lobby area between the men’s restroom and the main stairs. The concrete sidewalk is required for added exit.

$36,000

TOTAL PHASE 4: SABBATH SCHOOL WING REMODEL 5

REPAIR AND REPAVE ALL CHURCH AND SCHOOL PAVEMENT This is the final coat of pavement for the church and the base coat and final coat for the school.

$84,000 $150,000

TOTAL PHASE 5: PAVEMENT

$150,000

6A

RENOVATE STAIRS FOR EGRESS TO UPSTAIRS CLASSROOM Current stairs do not meet current fire codes, so we are not able to use these upper classrooms.

6B

EXTERIOR FACELIFT, MOVE CLASSROOM WINDOWS $33,000 We want the exterior of the school to connect, visually, with the architectural style of the church, so we’re giving the school a “facelift.” The windows on the back of the school will be moved to the side because fire code requires that there be no windows facing a fire exit.

6C

GYM – UPGRADE LIGHTING, RE-FACE STAGE FRONT While upgrading the lighting and improving the stage front are listed last, these projects are already being researched and will begin much sooner.

TOTAL PHASE 6

GRAND TOTAL

$34,000

$8,000

$75,000

$605,000
