It’s All About Relationships! BY PASTOR JEFF BROWN f course, our most important relationship is with God, and I hope each of us maintains a consistent, daily, PDD--Personal Daily Devotional time. I am currently reading through the Bible in "fast" mode, about 6 chapters a day. I'm kind of doing it randomly, reading some Old Testament, some New Testament, back and forth, here and there.

THIS MORNING I was reading in Numbers, and I'm just amazed at how the people were so fickle--"No, we can't go into Canaan; we'll all be killed! Let's choose someone to lead us back to Egypt." (Numbers 14:1-4) Then, after God sentenced them to stay in the desert, "Oh, so God wants us to conquer Canaan--let's go!" (same chapter, verses 40-45) and they were whupped badly. It's really discouraging to think that "all these things happened to them as examples" and we are just as immature, fickle, rebellious, and disobedient. I STILL PLAN to go through the whole Bible, chronologically, preaching on various books throughout a two-year period, using the New American Standard Bible. However, we won't begin that until after we finish the current series on the 28 Fundamental Beliefs. AFTER our most important relationship, our love relationship with Jesus, I hope that our second most important relationship is the one we have with our spouse. Early in our marriage, Joy and I

attended a "Marriage Commitment Seminar" in Texas, and it was a great blessing.

And face it, isn't your marriage worth

it? Is your marriage important? Have you had any date nights lately? (If not, you should put the money you didn't spend then toward the marriage retreat, too!!!) SATAN LOVES just about more than anything else, to mess up perfectly happy homes. He likes to make us too busy for each other, he likes to incite us to quarrel, cause arguments, make us impatient, critical, naggers. You know, in your heart, that you could really use a marriage retreat like this! We want a strong, healthy church, with strong, healthy marriages, so put this on your calendar now! New Year Under Way LCA is pleased to announce that our enrollment this school year is 31 as follows: Mrs. Allen's classroom: K - 2, has 9 students, Mr. Sargeant's classroom, grades 3 - 5, has 12 students, and Mrs. Mundall's classroom, grades 6 - 8, has 10 students. We are still happy to accept more students so share information with your friends and neighbors about our school if you believe we can be of service to them.

Thank you very much to all who participated in the LCA Work Bee on July 31. The pancake breakfast was delicious and all the willing helpers were invaluable! Picnic You are invited to come to the Lester Coon Adventist School's annual Welcome Back Picnic on Sunday, August 28, at 6:00 p.m. Drinks and tableware will be provided. Home & School Hello everyone! We have two big events coming up and we need your help. 1. Fall Family Festival on October 2 from noon to 4:00. We would like to try something new this year by having a family take on a booth and be responsible for it on that day. An Editor’s View BY ERLING ODELL The worldwide reach of the Seventh-day Adventist movement is awesome indeed. The magnitude of our work is phenomenal. The recent ASI Convention, as always, was thrilling for me, because the reports keep me excited about our message and its burgeoning advancement. Other mission reports throughout the year (including “Mission SONlight”, 3ABN and Hope Channel) provide a continuing flow of inspiring information. We can be proud of our international network of health ministries with its clinics, hospitals, books and magazines, airplanes and medical launches; our educational system – the largest church-operated in the

SEPTEMBER 2011

world; our publishing houses; our massive media network with its radio, television, satellites, internet and the latest hand-held technology; and publishing houses. Our Lord’s prediction that when the Gospel reaches the whole world, He will come has reached its fulfillment. One has only to connect with it through one of the many technical means. What has God wrought? Out of the ashes of the Great Disappointment of 1844, several Adventist groups emerged. Most are nearly extinct or at least small. We Seventh-day Adventists believe that God has raised us up for a particular work – heralding the beginning of the pre-advent judgment and the imminent second coming of Jesus as He promised. And what is the genius behind our movement which has brought such growth? Could any group of men and women, no matter how pious, conceive a movement with all these activities? Seems unlikely. But God, in His great wisdom, gave this people a more than adequate gift to assure us of success – Prophetic Guidance. Through the humblest of human instruments, God gave instruction for what to do and how to do it. When faithfully followed, the cause of truth has advanced with strength. Not only that, but helpful counsel for every phase of our personal lives has been given to us. Our lifestyle practices are recognized all over the world. God has given us the inspiration to do great things for His glory and to benefit the world – a weighty responsibility! Do we still need the guidance of the Spirit in the Scriptures and the Spirit of Prophecy to take us through to the end? With every wind of doctrine blowing can we safely turn to other ministries when they espouse false teachings such as predestination, ‘once saved, always saved,’ the immortality of the soul, eternal torment, Sunday sacredness, etc.? Now more than ever, we need the guidance of the Spirit. We cannot safely move forward ignoring the counsels that God has graciously given us. #

GARDENING W ITH THOMAS HOLDER I was asked recently why, as a teenager (I think they used the word child), I operated a garden. Though it was a perfectly reasonable question, I was taken off guard, forced to think. The answer that I brought forth was probably something about taste and health, exercise, etc. Later on, I seriously considered, "why should any kid, in this modern era, need to learn the trade of agriculture?" With all of our smart phones, supermarkets, restaurants, and distant mass-production farms, no one my age should really need to get into all that stuff. Farmers do all that. Where do farmers come from? It's not as simple as chickens and eggs; farmers' kids want ipods, too. At this rate, we should run out of cabbage and corn by the year 2040. Somebody needs to take this into their own hands! Not just someone– everyone. The Bible predicts a time of trouble like no other, and it's coming sooner than we think. There will be a terrible shortage of food, so whoever can raise a lot of their own will be best off. But gardening is not just a method of survival; it's a realm that offers opportunities for peace at mind, healthier lives, and even a closer relationship to God. Instead of finding the best-looking apples at the supermarket, the privilege of being able to watch the plants sprout, blossom, fight (bugs can be so cruel), and produce fruit, should bring out our praises to God every time we experience it. Ellen White puts it best: "To live in the country would be very beneficial to them (children); an active, out-ofdoor life would help develop health of both mind and body. They should have a garden to cultivate, where they might find both amusement and useful employment. The training of plants and flowers tends to the improvement of taste and judgment, while an

acquaintance with God's useful and beautiful creations has a refining and ennobling influence upon the mind, referring it to the maker and master of all."- Testimonies, vol. 4, page 136.

Vegan Delight BY : KATHERINE MAC FARLANE -oROASTED BUTTERNUT SQUASH 1 large butternut squash, peeled, seeded and 1 inch diced. 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon chopped thyme or dry 1 teaspoon salt Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Place squash on a rimmed baking sheet. Add olive oil, thyme, salt and toss with your hands. Roast until tender, tossing once during cooking with a metal spatula so that the cubes brown evenly, 30 to 40 minutes. Serves 4-6.

A local author, Don MacLafferty, who resides in Ooltewah, has written a small but fabulous paperback book entitled inside out - children and families trusting, following, and sharing Jesus. Don is the founder and executive director of Kids in Discipleship Ministry. His book is a "must read" for those who are praying that God will emotionally connect parents with their children. A profound statement in answer to Don's prayer regarding his daughter was, "If you are ever going to reach this girl for Me, you've got to get into her world." It was time for Don to find out what his daughter was interested in, what was important to her, and lead her to Christ. Many children today are growing up in emptiness as they pretty much raise themselves and are getting values from the media or peers. Who will lead them to the Father? Don went on to warn that today's activities make it easy for parents to stay disconnected spiritually by such things as dropping the kids off at school, or church, or at programs thus not being involved with them. How will we as parents fulfill God's dream for His children...to have all the family filled with the Holy Spirit, to have all the children able to prophesy about Jesus, and to have the old and young alike have visions and dreams together that live out God's dream for them all? We will never lead a child on a spiritual life journey that we are not taking ourselves. He has since been called to the Georgia-Cumberland Conference headquarters.

BY ART MILES When I was teaching church school in South Carolina, there was a very disturbed boy in 7th grade. He had no idea where his mother was, and he had very little contact with his father, who had left the boy with his grandmother. Because of his background, he wasn’t much of a student. His grades were BAD. Through my talking with him, I realized that he was intelligent. What to motivate him with was the question. I finally got a chance to talk with him secretly, and he mentioned he had never been outside the county he was born in. I said to him, “If you will get on the ball and bring your grades up, I will take you with us on our Christmas trip.” Fat chance, I thought. He buckled down and forgot everything else but getting ready for his trip. He quit his extra activities. He did not waste any time. He spent much time with his books. He studied like I knew he could. His grades greatly improved, and he went with us! Do we buckle down, and prepare for our trip? Is heaven important enough for us to forget everything else, and prepare for the trip? Do we spend enough time with the 66 Books? Do we “study to show ourselves approved to God”? #

Adventurers Club Organizing A new leadership team -- Martin and Thandi Klingbeil, Lonny and Janetta Byrd, and Tina Smith -- invites all children ages 4 through 4th grade to explore a growing, joyful love relationship with Jesus through the Apison Adventurer Club. Adventurers will meet twice each month beginning on September 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A complete schedule of meetings is available. The club will provide a T-shirt for each child, but

families will be responsible for club dues in addition to uniform fees. Parents are asked to attend all meetings with their children, and church members at large are needed as volunteers to teach classes, share worship and nature stories, and help young club members complete curriculum workbooks. Who we are and what we do -oTHE BRADFORDS

Wes and Summer Bradford have three sons: Benny, a 2nd grader at LCA; Rafferty, a 1st grader; and Timmy, age 3. Both Wes and Summer grew up Adventist – Summer in Kentucky and Wes in Washington state. They both attended Southern Adventist University, however not at the same time, and they both graduated from SAU. They met on facebook, through a mutual friend. Wes has a Masters degree in music education and currently works as a music teacher and band instructor at A. W. Spalding. Summer graduated in May with her Master of Arts degree in school counseling, and has been working part time at Bowman Hills SDA school as their school counselor. The family always looks forward to having summers off, and frequently takes the opportunity to travel during the summer. They took a six-week road trip to Washington this summer to see their grandparents. Wes enjoys theological discussions and sharing ideas.Summer enjoys peaceful, relaxing times with family and treasures close relations. She also lives up to her name, and enjoys all aspects of summer.

Ruben and Josie Rivera were born in the Dominican Republic, each to parents who were second generation Adventists. They attended the same Seventh-day Adventist college, where they met and got married after graduation in 1983. Ruben has worked for the church ever since, in various capacities, but mainly as a pastor. Josie is an LPN at Life Care Center of Collegedale. They have two daughters. The oldest, Jodari, is a graduate of Andrews University with a Master's degree in Social Work. The youngest is working on her Master's in Special Education at Andrews. They also have a son, Ruben Jr., who is a landscape designer. The two oldest children (Jodari and Ruben Jr.) are both married and expecting babies. “We moved down to this area recently from Wisconsin,” they said, “and, after looking at different churches, we decided to join the Apison church. We thank you for accepting us as members here. It is our prayer that our presence here may be a blessing reciprocally.”

S. D. G. BY ROBBY RANEY IV * What can Johann Sebastian Bach teach us about living our lives in harmony with scripture? He gives us a whole sermon in just three initials: S. D. G. Bach was a church musician for most of his life, and as such, he was required to write a piece of music, called a cantata, for each Sunday's service. At the end of these cantatas, Bach always penned those three initials. They stood for the Latin phrase Soli Deo Gloria. Translated into English, the phrase means Glory to God alone. Bach knew where his talents came from, and he followed what the apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10:31. In whatever he did, he did "it all for the glory of God." (NIV). I would like to encourage you to remember for whom you are really doing things. Don't think of Pastor Brown when making food for potluck. Instead, think of how you can bring God glory through your actions. Make him your priority, and he will bless you and make you great. * Robby is a sophomore music major at SAU, and is a staff announcer at WSMC..
