NEWSLETTER Term 4 Week 6 16 November 2016

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Mary MacKillop St Mary of the Cross Australia’s first Saint Born on 15 January 1842 in Melbourne Died 8 August 1909

CANONISED 17th October 2010

Last week we welcomed our new Kindergarten families for 2017 at an Information session in the Library and on Monday we had the first of two Orientation sessions for the children. It is always a privilege to welcome each new cohort of Kindergarten students and parents to our Catholic school community as they embark on their educational and faith journey with us at St Joseph’s. We realise that some ‘first time’ parents may be a little apprehensive about the whole “beginning big school” process but the community here at St Joseph’s is so welcoming and inclusive, I know that you will feel a part of the community very quickly. The new Kindies settled very well last Monday when they arrived for their Orientation sessions and it is a credit to both parents and our staff that the children settled into their activities so smoothly. We look forward to the second Orientation session next Monday. CAMP Australia As you are aware CAMP Australia will commence Before and After School Care in the Parish Centre from the first school day of Term 1 2017. A representative from CAMP Australia spoke to the parents at the Kindergarten Information Session last week and there was a further meeting last night at 6:00pm in the Library which was well attended. If you would like to register your child for Before and After School Care with CAMP Australia please use the link provided. Where you enter the school name, please type in Riverwood and our school name will appear in the drop down box. Once you register you will receive a confirmation email of your enrolment. www.campaustralia.com.au

Class Placements for 2017 If you would like to make a request regarding class placements for your child for 2017 the cut off date is Friday 18th November. Please email your request to [email protected]. Unequivocal decisions regarding classes for 2017 will be finalised after this date and further discussions will not take place. You are invited to be proactive rather than reactive. Please note that this is not an opportunity to request individual teachers, but an opportunity to discuss a particular issue that might impact on your child’s learning in 2017. This is the time to discuss any issues regarding your child’s optimum learning for 2017. PARENT HELPER’S MORNING TEA We have a wonderful group of dedicated parent helpers in our school who assist in the classroom, on excursions and at school and P & F functions. We are very grateful for your help and would like to invite you to a “Thank You” morning tea as a way of acknowledging your generosity. The morning tea will be held in the Parish Centre on Monday 5th December at 9:00am. Please RSVP your attendance to [email protected] by Wednesday 30 November.

Mrs Lauren Koszek has been on leave this term and will return to school next week. Her mother is seriously ill and has undergone major surgery last week. Please keep Mrs Koszek’s family in your prayers. Congratulations to Miss Kate Ochojski who became engaged this week.

Thank you to the P & F for a most enjoyable night at the races on Friday 11th November. The staff and parents who attended all had a great time.

God Bless

ST JOSEPH’S VISION FOR LEARNING As you are aware, we recently launched our school’s new mission statement and our Vision for learning at St Joseph’s. Our Vision for Learning consists of 3 main principles that will direct learning and teaching for our students and teachers now and into the future. A focus on being Active, Collaborative and Creative learners will assist our students to navigate the uncharted waters of education, work and life in the 21st Century. As we come to the conclusion of this year and as we enter the new year in Term 1 you will be hearing these words on a regular basis. But what do they mean for your child? To be an Active Learner  Strive to reach my potential  Become a critical thinker  Take ownership of my learning To be a Collaborative Learner  Share with others  Listen to and respect the ideas of others  Work as a team player To be a Creative Learner  Contribute my own ideas and value those of others  Use opportunities to be creative in my thinking  Persist with tasks that are challenging As we work with our students in class, we will be helping them to see the links between these principles and the tasks they undertake in all curriculum areas. As your children speak with you about their days and all the activities they take part in, this summary may give you a starting point for helping your children articulate the purpose of what they do in class each day.

BAND Congratulations to all the members of our School Band. They recently performed a wonderful concert for our students and it was great to see how far they have progressed as individual musicians and as a group. If your child is interested in joining the Band next year please collect a band note from the school office.

Catechists’ Thanksgiving Mass  Next Tuesday evening, 22nd November, the Parish will gather at 7:30pm for a special thanksgiving Mass to honour our generous and dedicated Catechists.  All children who have received the Sacraments of Confirmation or Penance are warmly invited to attend, to show their appreciation for the work the Catechists do in our parish, teaching the children and preparing them for the Sacraments. Traditionally our First Holy Communicants for the year are invested with the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The scapular is a small piece of brown cloth bearing the images of Our Lady and the Sacred Heart and is worn as a symbol of our trust in Our Lady’s motherly protection, as we try to follow her perfect example. The Scapular Investiture will not be part of this year’s thanksgiving Mass as the Parish did not conduct First Holy Communion this year. The students at St Joseph’s Riverwood will be receiving their First Holy Communion in Year 3 and above from now on. Should there be any students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this year, and have not yet received the Scapular, and would like to do so, could you please see me so that this can be arranged.

WALK WITH CHRIST - The King Of Mercy

BOOK OF LIFE

During this week the ‘Book of Life’ prayer journal is in the foyer of the office, available to you to record the prayers and intentions of our community. The book will be placed in St Mary’s Cathedral at the conclusion of the Walk with Christ Eucharistic Procession in the Sydney CBD on Sunday 20th November - the Feast of Christ the King and the conclusion of our Jubilee Year of Mercy. The book will also circulate throughout the school for the students to enter their own prayers and intentions and those of their families. Please take some time to enter your intentions and prayers. Jesus, the King of Mercy, asks us to bring our burdens to Him.

“Come to me, all who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest.”  (Matthew 11:28)

FIRST CONFESSION  Last Wednesday evening 42 children from our Parish made their First Confession. This was an important step for them in their faith journey, following four weeks of preparation classes with Parish Catechist, Toni Stevens. Congratulations to the candidates, and their parents who attended the classes with their children and supported them in completing their homework tasks each week. The children engaged in the classes in a thorough and reverent manner and celebrated Mass together afterwards, each week. A sincere thank you also to Mrs El Khabbaz who generously provided a memento of the occasion for each of the children.  “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Last Friday we had a very reverent commemoration of Remembrance Day led by Year 6 MacKillop. Through our assembly we honoured those who have lost their lives through warfare. Our Year 6 students also prayerfully reminded us that Remembrance Day is not just about remembering those who have died but it is also about praying for the end of warfare and for genuine peace throughout the world.

SENIORS’ CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

An important annual occasion for our Parish and School took place today, the Christmas Luncheon for our senior parishioners. It is an opportunity for Parish and School to work together to bring some Christmas joy to some very special people in our Parish.

Thank you to Mrs Gina Yazbeck, Mrs Maree Gereige, Mrs Rita El Azzi & Mrs Elizabeth Nobrega who generously gave up their time to prepare the luncheon. Our Year 6 leaders very capably served the lunch and our School Choir tunefully provided some light entertainment. Thank you also to our Year 5 students whose craft skills provided a small memento of the relaxed and happy Christmas celebration.

I would also like to thank the many people behind the scenes who lent their assistance to making this an enjoyable and memorable day: Mrs Leisa Rodoreda for her skill with design and decoration, Mrs Leigh Eaton and Mrs Michelle Fullerton for the choir and Mrs Cathy Truman for her assistance with the children’s craft gifts. Events like this do not just happen without planning and cooperation, our St Joseph’s community spirit is alive and well.

Peace and best wishes   Robyn Green “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” P & F News Dear Parents and Caregivers The P&F AGM for 2016 is 6 December @ 7pm in the library As some of your executive have reached the two year term limit for our positions (including yours truly, Rebecca and Nancy) we need some fresh talent. All positions will be declared vacant on the night and positions filled. Nominations open now and close at 3pm on the afternoon of the meeting. Nominations are to be in writing with a nominator and seconder to be a parent/caregiver of a student at our school. Nominations must be handed in at the office. The following positions will need to be filled on the night; President, Vice President, Secretary & Treasurer It's only two meetings a term and a little bit of event coordination. An active P&F is needed for parents to have a collective voice and to raise vital funds which go toward our kids. I've really enjoyed my time as President. Its allowed me to get involved in the school community and my daughters education in a way I would never have experienced if I sat back and didn't get involved. I'd like to thank Vice President Rebecca Abel for her tremendous amount of hard work and play ground work answering random questions from parents. I'd like to thank Treasurer Nancy Graniero for her attention to detail and efforts running the accounts. Especially the new bank transfer system minimising cash handling. I'd like to thank Secretary Yvette Kellehear for her work and I hope she stays on next year. I'd like to thank all the year coordinators and volunteers who helped throughout the year. Finally I'd like to thank Principal Kim McCue for all her hard work, dedication and support. We are lucky to have her. Night at the Races:- Thanks to everyone who came to night at the races, a great night was had by all and we shall do it all again next year. Cupcake Day:- Cupcake day is on Friday 25 November, we are asking for cupcakes to be provided from kindy, year 2 & year 5 please. Regards Steve McMahon P & F President
