NEWSLETTER Term 3 Week 6 24 August 2016

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Mary MacKillop St Mary of the Cross Australia’s first Saint Born on 15 January 1842 in Melbourne Died 8 August 1909

CANONISED 17th October 2010

Recently a survey was sent to all families asking for responses to questions concerning their child’s education here at St Joseph’s and our commitment to being an inclusive and welcoming community. So far we have had 79 families respond and overall the answers are very positive, however, there are a few areas that parents are concerned about, mainly Homework (both too much given and not enough given) and class sizes. I would like to hold a Parent Forum at the end of this term and again in December to create another opportunity for parents to be involved in the life of the school and to contribute their ideas in a positive way. There will be a day time meeting as well as an evening meeting to try to accommodate the needs of all families. The first Parent Forum will be on Monday 12th September at 9:00am in the Library and the evening meeting will be held on Thursday 17th November at 7:00pm. The purpose of the forums will be to work together to clarify some areas and to take on board suggestions from parents as to how we can continue to improve as a learning community.

Kindergarten 2017 Hopefully all families have received notification that we will have three Kindergarten classes in 2017. To accommodate the extra class it will be necessary, in the short term, to have a demountable classroom on site. We have been very fortunate in procuring a demountable that has been used as an Early Childhood Centre and it has enough room for the three Kindergarten classes. I will be discussing this at the P & F meeting to be held next Tuesday night at 7:00pm in the Library. If you are unable to attend the meeting and have some questions, please do not hesitate to contact me either in person or via email.

LITTLETON STREET DROP OFF AND PICK UP ZONE  Thank you to the families who have responded to improving the procedures for Car Line. We are asked quite regularly by parents and grandparents why cars are not permitted to line up in Littleton Street from 3:00pm. The dismissal bell rings at 3:05. To alleviate congestion at the gates and in Littleton Street, students whose parents are on the playground are dismissed first from lines. The Car line students then move to the Silver Seats. Realistically and logistically, car line does not commence until 3:10.   Please understand that Littleton St is a public street and that we need to work with the local council and residents to ensure a safe and workable solution to managing the volume of school traffic in the afternoon.    To make the car line procedures more efficient please adhere to the following expectations:     Pick up line cars enter Littleton St at 3:10 and not before that time. If you are waiting in the line up of cars before 3:10 and the parking police are there you will be booked “Blessed are the merciful, for they obtain mercy.”

Matthew 5:7

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” FROM THE PRINCIPAL Cont’d 

Pick up line drivers need to ensure that they give way to any cars trying to move from their legal parking spot in Littleton Street



Have your family name clearly displayed for the teacher on duty



Please inform any carers, family friends or grandparents who collect your children of the car line procedures



Please be patient and understand that we are trying to provide a safe and workable solution to dismissing over 400 students and that everything we do is for their safety.

FATHER’S DAY BBQ BREAKFAST   We look forward to seeing Dads and Grandfathers at the BBQ Breakfast next Thursday 4th September. God Bless Kim McCue Principal

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CO-ORDINATOR

Part of our mission as a Catholic School is to teach our students to:

know, understand and act on Catholic social teaching, in particular the ‘preferential option for the poor’, the obligation to be good stewards of God’s creation, the recognition of universal human rights, and the responsibility to foster peaceful relations among peoples  Archbishop’s Charter #5

One of our annual social outreach initiatives, which assists us to fulfill our mission, is to support the Gethsemane Community led by Sister Myree Harris, a contemporary Josephite, who is the community leader and coordinator. Gethsemane Community is a community house for a small number of men and women with mental illness and/or intellectual disability, who have no family or friendship support and have been homeless or living in insecure housing. Gethsemane is the only place that helps these residents develop living skills and promotes independence, responsibility and care for each other. The Gethsemane Community also supports many other poor and lonely people living under difficult circumstances throughout Sydney.

At St Joseph’s we support the Gethsemane Community by providing men’s and ladies’ dress socks which are used as part of Christmas gift packages, and we send Christmas cards at Christmas time, which bring great joy to these people who do not have family support.

As is tradition, we are having a Crazy Sock Day on Monday 12th September.

The children may wear crazy socks in any way they would like - on their feet, in their hair, as jewellery etc. however instead of bringing in socks, we are simply asking for a gold coin or pink note donation. The particular ladies’ and men’s dress socks needed can be difficult to source and your donations will enable us to purchase the most appropriate items.

Our School Leaders and Student Representative Council members will be promoting Crazy Sock Day before Monday 12th September and we thank you in anticipation of your generous support for these lonely people whose Christmas Day you will brighten immensely.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7

The theme for this year’s Book Week is Australia: Story Country. We have been celebrating Book Week with lots of exciting activities. On Monday Kindergarten to Year 2 had a great time at the Fair Dinkum performance. Years 3-6 were thrilled to draw with Mathew Lin and to watch him draw Manga, especially the Pokemon characters. There is a Book Fair operating all week before and after school. A big thank you to those people who have already supported our Book Fair. The Book Fair will be on throughout our Book Character Parade morning. This is a wonderful opportunity for you to purchase some books for your children or for the school.
