Term 3 Week 10 20 September 2017

Dear Parents and Caregivers   Yesterday Mrs Robyn Green undertook her contract renewal process. It was a very successful, rewarding and affirming day for Mrs Green as various members of our school community including Father John, myself, the Leadership team, staff, parents and students , spoke to the panel of Mrs Green’s achievements over the last three years. I am sure that you will join us in congratulating Mrs Green on a successful contract renewal.

Mary MacKillop

I know that we are all looking forward to the holiday break. We have had quite a bit of sickness amongst both staff and students this term, so hopefully, the two weeks away from school will give everyone the chance to relax and regain their health and energy levels.

St Mary of the Cross Australia’s first Saint Born on 15 January 1842 in Melbourne Died 8 August 1909 CANONISED

First Communion and Confirmation Over the last two Sundays we had the privilege of celebrating the sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation at our Riverwood and Peakhurst parishes. No matter how many times I celebrate the sacraments with a school community, there is always something very special in the way the children are so well prepared and ready to open their hearts to God’s blessings and gifts of the Holy Spirit.

17th October 2010 HOLIDAY MAINTENANCE WORK During the school holiday break the area between the Administration block and the classrooms and staff room will be pressure cleaned and the archway steelwork along with the concrete, will be painted. The school has ordered panels to fit into the four recesses on the grey wall as you enter the school to celebrate our SPBL principles, ‘Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe’ along with our SPBL Joey mascot.   Joseph’s Catholic Church Riverwood St Mass Times: Sat 9am & 6pm (Vigil), Sun 7.30am & 9.30am, Tues 7.30am, Wed 9.00am, Thurs 7.30am convent) Fri9.00am (except 1st Fri 12pm)   Confession: 5-5.45pm Saturdays

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” PRINCIPAL Cont’d There will also be new signage on the arches above the doors as you enter the school. One will be a sign with our school emblem and the other three will promote our school wide pedagogical principles of being ‘Active, Collaborative and Creative’ learners. Ninety new chairs have been purchased for the Parish Centre and we are also re-stocking the toys and games used at Passive Play. Plans are underway to order new furniture for some of the classrooms over the next term.

TALENT QUEST GRAND FINAL Thank you to Mrs Green and the Year 6 students who have done a wonderful job organising the auditions for the St Joseph’s Talent Quest. As with the auditions, the Grand Final will be for the students only and parents are kindly asked not to attend. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Students will return to school on Monday 9th October for Term 4. All students are to return in full summer uniform. There will be an incursion for Kindergarten and Year One on the first day back next term on Street Safety and my contract renewal will take place on Thursday 12th October.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL SAFETY REMINDER - DROP OFF/PICK UP

A number of parents have brought to my attention that there are some unsafe practices occurring during drop off in the morning and pick up in the afternoon.

Please take the time to read this information so we can continue to work together to promote a safer drop off and pick up zone. 

Students are asked NOT to place their bags in the boot of the car. It is not safe for students to stand behind cars in a pickup queue.



Please display the family name in the passenger window.



Please do not park in the queue or ‘No Stopping’ areas and then get out of your car to hold up the sign.

PARENT COMMUNICATION:

Please be mindful of each other and ensure you use the appropriate ‘channels’ when incidents occur between your child and another student. It is best to encourage your child to speak to their class teacher if they need assistance in class or on the playground. Please do not call parents and discuss the matter yourself. Thank you.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR On Sunday 10 September some of our Year 6 students received the Sacrament of Confirmation at Our Lady of Fatima Church Peakhurst. Congratulations to the following students:Christian Alvaro, Daniel Bortolin, Dylan Brooks, Donovan Brooks, Antonio Caruana, Joshua Crewes, Daniel Crimmins, William De Oliveira, Charlie Fahd, Oliver Farr, Sienna Ferguson, Logan Hill, Daniel Lakiss, Isabella Mandalinic, Rechelle Nagle, Claudia Nguyen, Natasha Santos, Laurel Whale and Daniel Wilding Last Sunday, 17 September, our St Joseph’s school and parish celebrated the First Holy Communion of 52 candidates. Thank you to everyone who was responsible for making the receiving of this sacrament a very special occasion for the children - Father John, the families, catechists, teachers, Sister Mary Ephrim who looked after the beautiful singing, the choir and Alex Stevens, the organist. Thank you also to Mr James Dixon and the altar servers, and everyone else behind the scenes who contributed.  The following children from St Joseph’s received the Sacrament of the Eucharist and are to be congratulated on the reverent way they prepared for and developed their understanding of the meaning of this important step in their faith journey. Rachel Alexander, Olivia Asprea, Nathan Azzi, Jesse Bonaventura, Bob Boulos, Bashir Boulos, Jisla Bravo, Matthew Bui, Isabella Chen, Isabella Clancy, Roy Daylusan, Gaia El Khabbaz, Kane Fullerton, Nathan Hazari, Noah Khoury, Jayden Mahara-Piggott, Michelle Martono, Michael Miller, David Nguyen, Felicia Nguyen, Marceline Oendy, Ava Ost, Albert Pham, Timothy Rosales, Andrew Rustom, Phillip Rustom, Alessandra Sacchinelli, Joshua Shore, Klara Tadic, Zoe Tsaprazis, Emily Zhai, Jessica Zhen and Veronica Zhen  For Catholics, the Sacrament of the Eucharist is a sacred meal where we break bread and share the one cup. It is the paramount sign of our unity with and in Christ. It is described as the ‘source and summit’ of the Church’s life. May the Holy Communion the children participated in last Sunday be the first of many, many celebrations of the sacrament throughout their lives.

Last Wednesday evening we held the Parent/Carers Information session for families wanting their children to make their First Confession in November. If you have not yet received an enrolment form for First Confession and you would like one for your child, please contact the School Office.  “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His Name”

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR CONT’D

The last few weeks have been alive with talented performances from many of our students as they participated in or were part of the audience for St Joseph’s Got Talent! This is a wonderful time of year for us as the children thoroughly enjoy showcasing their skills in front of an appreciative audience and all of this contributes to a significant fundraising cause - the Charitable Works Fund.

The Charitable Works Fund (CWF) is a centralised fund that supports the charitable and pastoral activities of the Archdiocese of Sydney. It is our charity, the charity of the Sydney Catholic community and our local parishes.  CWF funds six agencies:  Aboriginal Catholic Ministry – promoting reconciliation and mutual understanding and providing pastoral care for Catholic Aboriginals and supporting them in the living of their Faith. 

CatholicCare – Formerly known as Centacare, delivers over 100 programs in Ageing, Disability, Children & Youth, Employment Training & Support, and Family Services.



Chaplaincies – Our chaplaincy services in hospital, prisons and universities provide much needed support to the lonely, sick, hurt and suffering in the community.



Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) – provides religious education and Christian formation for Catholic children in public schools.



Ephpheta Centre – provides services to the deaf and hearing impaired including sacramental, counselling, support and advocacy services. “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His Name”

Seminary of the Good Shepherd - supporting the education and training of future Priests for the Archdiocese.

The generosity of those who contribute financially to the CWF, means that these agencies are able to assist thousands of people each year.

The St Joseph’s Got Talent fundraiser concludes this Friday afternoon in the Grand Finale performance. Our Year Six leaders and judges have chosen 11 of the best acts to perform in front of the school.

Congratulations to our Year 6 leaders who have organised and promoted this important fundraiser that has brought a lot of enjoyment to the students and supported a valuable social justice outreach initiative. Special mention must go to Harry Kontrafouris for his leadership and organisation of the Talent Quest. Thank you to our judges; Harry Kontrafouris, Jennifer Lo, Jacob Khoury and Sienna Ferguson. Well done to Lara Tolic for hosting the auditions. Special thanks to Stephanie Korkotidis and Stephanie Vostoganis for their musical direction. Finally Isabella Mandalinic, Peter Govesis and Dimitri Antonio did a fabulous job directing the audience.   AN INVITATION

We are blessed with a diverse community of believers here at St Joseph’s Riverwood. Father John Doherty has expressed a wish to get to know the parents of our students of the Orthodox faith a little better. He has suggested having an informal gathering and chat where he can answer questions and get to know a broader range of parents and caregivers in our school community. An invitation for our Orthodox families will be coming home early next term for an informative and relaxing get together.

This week I completed my Contract Renewal process. I would like to express my deep appreciation and thanks for your completion of the Parent surveys and the wonderful support I receive every day in my role as Religious Education Coordinator. I am truly blessed to work in such a generous and caring community.  I wish everyone a safe and relaxing school break, enjoying the company of family and friends.  Peace and best wishes Robyn Green “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His Name”

Sport Nominations for Year 4 and Year 5  Please note that the green nomination form that was sent home is to be returned by Friday as try outs for some sports will begin in Term 4.

Sporting Schools Australia  We have received three grants this year through the Sporting Schools Australia grant. In Term 2 as you know Year 5 participated in Rugby League and we purchased new footballs and equipment for the school. In Term 3, Year 4 participated in Basketball and we were able to purchase more balls and equipment.

In Term 4, Year 3 will be participating in lessons as part of a Netball program and we will again be able to purchase some more equipment for the school. As a result of this program in 2018 we have been able to inject around $7000 into the school through programs and equipment as a result of the grants.

The Year 3 parents have already received a note with more information about the program.

Active Kids Rebate Program

Please use the following link to learn more about the Active Kids Rebate Program. (Cut and paste the link into a new web browser). https://sport.nsw.gov.au/officeofsport/sectordevelopment/activekids

The Active Kids Rebate program aims to help NSW families meet the cost of getting their kids into sport and fitness activities. From 1 January 2018, parents will be able to claim up to $100 per school child, per calendar year, as a voucher to reduce the cost of sport registration or membership fees for after-school, weekend and structured fitness or physical activity. These activities could include: traditional sport such as netball, football or basketball; swimming classes or lessons; as well as other fitness or physical activities such as gymnastics or athletics. The voucher will not be means-tested and available to every school child wanting to get active in their community through sport and active recreation. Parents will be able to register online to get their voucher to a sports club or registered provider to receive the rebate.
