CONGRATULATIONS TO …

THE JACK PETCHEY SCHEME

… Mason Gotts in Year 9 who took part in Southend’s Remembrance Day events last Sunday. Here is his account of the day.

We are pleased to announce the return of this excellent scheme in January.

“My name is Mason Gotts and I am a Royal Marine Cadet. As part of the Remembrance Day events on Sunday 12 November 2017, I was lucky enough to be invited to meet the Mayor of Southend. I love being part of this group as we get loads of opportunities to learn new skills and make new friends. It makes me feel very proud when I put my uniform on. My favourite part of being a cadet is when we do the parades and the training.” … the Year 9 football team who have progressed to the 4th round of the ESFA Playstation cup. This is a national event and following our triumph at Northfleet Technological College in Kent, we will host Dover Grammar School for Boys on Thursday 30 November. Greensward took an early lead following a Connor Rowlands tap in and an Elliot Booth thunderbolt. However, Northfleet pulled one back on the stroke of half time. The boys were put under huge pressure from the hosts and despite a second goal from Connor Rowlands, Northfleet fought back to level the game at 33. A missed penalty from Northfleet was the stroke of luck Greensward needed. Connor Rowlands completed his hat-trick and with it wrapped up a 4-3 victory. Solid defending led by Jack Hutchins, Ollie Nicks, Jack Buchanan, Joe Hurd and Max Stapleton helped us to survive a late barrage from Northfleet and secure a memorable cup win. … ex student, James Moore, whose play has won 1st prize in the Arch and Bruce Brown 2017 playwright competition.

Students nominate each other based on commitment, excelling or even where they have provided significant contributions to the community. A committee collects all the nominations and chooses a worthy winner who is announced in assembly and presented with a certificate and a badge for recognition. The winner then nominates a department to receive the £250 reward and they choose what they would like the money to be spent on. How to nominate:   

Via email: [email protected] through your form tutor or Jack Petchey committee member complete a nomination slip and place it in the box at main reception.

Make sure you write down as much as you can to help convince the committee that your nominee should be chosen as a worthy winner.

YEAR 7 GIRLS BASKETBALL

SHOE BOX APPEAL Don’t forget that we are taking part in the ‘Christmas Shoe Box Appeal’ this year. Students in Years 7 and 8 have been given full details by their Tutor. The gifts are for children without parents or who live in extreme poverty. Families wishing to take part in the appeal are asked for shoeboxes to be brought in by 22 November 2017, to be delivered to Mr McBreen in EG17 or their Tutor. For further information please visit their website.

ART WORK OF THE WEEK The Year 7 girls basketball team had their first game of the season in the Essex Cup against James Hornsby this week. This was the first ever game of basketball for the vast majority of the girls. They were all fantastic and all played well which was reflected in them winning the game 38-22. The girls have their next game on Tuesday 21 November away at Mayflower High. Any girls who are still interested in playing are more than welcome to attend training on Monday and Thursday mornings before school at 7.30am.

Congratulations to Phoebe Dalton in 13SCW who is nearing completion of her project, the focus of which is cultural headdresses.

SIXTH FORM INFORMATION EVENING Last night the academy held its annual Sixth Form Information Evening where a record number of students and parents explored the range of opportunities available for them next year. With our A Level and BTEC results placing us in the top 10% of sixth forms nationally for the third consecutive year, the evening was an excellent chance to discover the broad range of subjects and extra-curricular activities on offer. Guided by our current sixth form students, there was the chance to ask questions to both them and subject staff as well as listen to a general talk on post 16 life. A number of applications have already been received just hours after the event, with one student describing how she had been dead set on a place elsewhere but was now eager to enrol at Greensward. If anyone missed the evening last night or requires any further information, then please contact Mr Benson at the academy who will be happy to help. The presentation from last night together with application forms, prospectus and further information can be found on our website.
