Teaching Ratings and Selected Comments from Spring Semester 2014 J. Anthony Cookson     

These ratings and comments are student feedback from my teaching of three parallel sections of FNCE 4030 – “Investments and Portfolio Management.” I transcribed them from official faculty course questionnaire responses. As this was my first time teaching FNCE 4030, I was developing the course materials (e.g., notes, project instructions, homework assignments, and lectures) along with the delivery of the course. Assignments, class e-mails, project instructions, and exams were common across the three sections. Each rating category gives median (mean) out of 6 possible points. The comments reproduced here are a selective, but representative sample. I have retained the original hardcopies.

General and Course Delivery: “Favorite finance class so far. Dr. Cookson, you’re the bomb! Go Buffs!” “I have really enjoyed this class and it has made me want to pursue a career in the investments side of finance.” “Tonyisthebomb.com” (note: not an actual website) “Your passion and enthusiasm for what you teach is uncommon and appreciated. In speaking with other students, a slower pacing would be widely well received.” “Love the enthusiasm!” “Your enthusiasm is contagious. If I could have weighted you higher than a 6 for encouraging interest, I would have.” “Started out shaky but you seemed to really get a hold on it.” “Should be more clear about the key takeaways of material after statistical/economic tangents.” “Very smart teacher. I really enjoyed taking this class.” “More on what to expect on tests would be nice as a lot of other subjects do this.” “Tony was passionate about teaching.” “Excel in class is not helpful. Do more in class that is relevant to tests.” “It would be good if we dedicated more time on the in-class exercises and go over solutions in class.” “I think it would be helpful to give more examples where actual numbers are used. When the examples have nothing but variables it is hard to keep everything straight.” “Suggestion: for each topic, start with a general overview of what it actually is in practice before jumping into the math.”

Difficulty, Learning, and Course Material: “I learned a good amount in your class. The most out of all my finance classes so far.” “I felt like I learned nothing in this class.” “This was a great class. I enjoyed the projects and in-class exercises. I thought they really helped enhance the learning.” “It was extremely difficult to follow information if you didn’t have a strong understanding of statistics.” “Really energetic! But makes some topics harder and more statistical than necessary.” “As for what to improve, less emphasis on or a better review of statistical principles.” “The course has great potential and is very valuable at is core, but we seemed to get caught up on minute details that clouded the delivery of big concepts.”

“Covered a lot of information but some of topics are outdated in real world. Sometimes went to [sic] fast and lost the class.” “Midterms were very difficult.” “Second exam nothing like the first. Was quite blindsiding. Might get some bad FCQs because of that. Keep your head up.” “Very hard, not enough quality explanation, overly complicated emails and projects.” “Some projects were too difficult and too way too much time.” “Suggestion: there is a ton of wasted time on projects with repetitive steps. Would be nice if some data was given, so we just had to do stuff we can learn from.” “I really enjoyed the challenge of this course.” “I think it’s strange that the other teacher is so much easier.” “Great job teaching, learned a lot, excited teaching.”

Administrative and Course Development: “I think you should just provide your notes, far better than the textbook. Great Professor. He really cares about the students and puts time and effort into them. Great class and I learned a lot. It would be silly to let Professor Cookson ever leave.” “Notes are very nice.” “Although the notes are extremely helpful, it might be better for students to see a more organized visual set of notes in class (e.g., Powerpoint). Otherwise, excellent professor.” “The notes posted to D2L have been very helpful.” “Please do slides that explain the concepts more clearly! Your notes are not very helpful.” “The projects were very helpful but were not good group projects. Since only one person can be on the computer, it turned into one person working at the rest of the group chatting. I would make them individual projects.” “The only thing I did not like was the corrections to the projects.” “His project instructions and details were unorganized and he would often email us with adjustments.” “Projects are tedious and the directions are way too long. Sometimes get lost with structure in class, a bit more organization would be helpful.”
