TEACHER AWARDS Background The district strongly supports acknowledging teachers, when and where appropriate, with a number of awards. Procedures 1. Edwin Parr Award 1.1

Information regarding this award will be sent to the principal annually. One teacher from the district will be nominated annually for this award. Timeline: January/February

To be selected for nomination from the district, the teacher must have demonstrated outstanding performance in all areas of teaching. Principals are asked to bring potential candidates to the attention of a selection committee of principals that will be established on an annual basis. Human Resources will assist principals in preparing the necessary documentation on the teacher nominated to represent the district.

1.3

The Alberta School Boards Association Edwin Parr Teacher Award is designed to provide recognition to the most outstanding novice teacher in the province. To be eligible for this award, the candidate must be:

A first year K-12 teacher.

1.3.2

Have a minimum of 100 full-time equivalent days of teaching within the current school year.

1.3.3

The candidate’s first year of teaching experience must be completed in Alberta from a school jurisdiction that is a member of the Alberta School Board’s Association.

1.3.4

The candidate may have up to 120 days of teaching service prior to signing a full-time contract with our district.

Principals are invited to nominate a teacher from their staff and provide an evaluation of the teacher in the following categories. 1.4.1

Knowledge of student learning styles.

1.4.2

Instructional Methodologies.

1.4.3

Evaluation of student methodologies.

1.4.4

Skill in diagnosing the knowledge of students for a given set of instructional objectives.

1.4.5

Skill in assisting students to develop a positive self-concept.

Involvement in professional development, extra-curricular and community activities.

Scholastic History.

A Selection Committee, consisting of administrative representatives from each division from our district, evaluates each of the submissions, using the criteria listed above. One teacher is selected from our district to represent the Calgary Catholic School District at the zone level.

2. Excellence In Catholic Education Award 2.1.

The Excellence in Catholic Education Award was created by the Council of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta to honour Catholic educators in Alberta who have made an extraordinary contribution to the lives of Catholic students. The award recognizes Catholic educators in Alberta who are passionate about Catholic education, inspire students, and demonstrate commitment to Catholic education and teaching excellence. JUNE 2015.

Finalists for this award exhibit the following traits: 2.2.1

Role model Catholic values and lifestyle.

Foster the development of students in their spiritual, intellectual, social, emotional, and physical growth.

2.2.3

Motivate students to exceed their own expectations.

2.2.4

Work collaboratively with colleagues.

2.2.5

Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of curriculum and the interjection of the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Involved in professional and spiritual growth activities.

3. Alberta Excellence In Teaching Award 3.1

Through the Excellence in Teaching Program, Alberta communities are able to publicly recognize the enthusiasm, dedication, and creativity of outstanding teachers. The Selection Committee for these awards looks for clear examples of how the nominee has excelled in the following areas: 3.1.1

Achieving positive results in student learning and attitudes;

3.1.2

Fostering the development of students and their intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth;

3.1.3

Establishing a stimulating learning environment;

3.1.4

Motivating students to exceed their own expectations;

Attending to individual student needs;

4. Prime Minister’s Awards For Teaching Excellence 4.1

The Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence are an ideal way for Canadians to recognize teachers whose skill, dedication and infectious enthusiasm lead students to look beyond the textbook, the classroom walls and final exams to see a world of opportunity.

4.2

The awards honour teachers from all disciplines who have made extraordinary efforts to prepare students for the challenges of a knowledge-based economy by improving student achievement, developing student skills, promoting student interest and participation, showing commitment and leadership, and creating and using exemplary teaching practices. If you know such a teacher, please consider nominating him or her for an award.
