Pastor’s Notes Jesus sends out seventy-two disciples as His representatives to each town He was planning to visit. In a sense these disciples would be advertising that Jesus was coming. The people to whom they went would have time to prepare for Jesus’s coming. It would be similar today to the advance notices that some celebrity or politician was coming to town. But Jesus did something that no one else could do. Jesus gave them power to act in His name. He sent them in a way so that anyone who saw them would already feel Christ’s presence among them long before Jesus appeared. Those who accepted them would have already accepted Christ. Those who rejected them had already rejected Christ. The message they proclaimed would have the same force as that of Jesus, Himself, because it would be His message and His alone. They were not to rely on their own talents, abilities, wealth, or any earthly thing. They were to only rely on faith in God. God would supply them what they needed whether food, clothing, or shelter. And as Jesus told them, their reward would not be gaining fame for what they did in Jesus’ name, but in having their names inscribed in heaven. Christ continually calls each and every one of us to go out and spread the Good News. In doing this we are to follow the same advice as the seventy-two. We are to put our trust in God and not in our worldly possessions. We are to call others to know that the Kingdom of God is at hand. We are to be instruments of Jesus’ peace. And we are to do this not in preaching as the seventy-two did, but in the way we live our lives day in and day out. In this we are still sent out as sheep among wolves. As Christians we are to be a countersign to the false values promoted by our secular culture. And because we are a countersign we will encounter resistance from that culture and those who believe their sense of self, happiness, etc. is dependent on that culture. They will reject us and be openly hostile to us. There may even be times when we will have to symbolically kick the dust from our feet in testimony against them. But in all of this, we have to remember that it is not us who is being accepted or rejected, but Christ, Himself. In all situations we are called to put on love. Even in “kicking that dust from our feet”, we are to see it not as a rejection of those who oppose us but as a form of “tough love” that will, we hope, ultimately bring them to conversion and acceptance of the Lord whom they now reject. And once again, we are to constantly remind ourselves that it is not our efforts, but the grace of God that we allow to flow through us that brings that faith in Jesus Christ to others.

JULY 3, 2016___________ PEACE

The greeting of peace at Mass adds substance to a message of today’s readings: peace is relational. When we greet in peace the person near us at Mass, we share the touch of a handshake or embrace, sincere eye contact, and friendly words. The scriptures speak of a similar peace. The first reading from Isaiah describes the peace of the holy city, Jerusalem, a place of prosperity and comfort where the “LORD’s power shall be known to his servants” (Isaiah 66:14c). The Christian understanding of peace changes slightly. Paul writes of the “peace and mercy” on all who are created anew. Jesus describes a feeling of peace that will rest on those who accept his disciples and their message. Peace is both an absence of strife and a personal blessing. ELECTRICAL PROJECT: If you have questions or concerns we strongly encourage you to come to Lourdes Hall next Sunday, July 10th after the 10:00 AM Mass; Keith Davison and Fr. Tom will hold a question and answer session for everyone. Coffee and donuts will be provided. With the electrical project we have an events committee. This committee will be responsible for planning, organizing and executing fundraising events. The first event that we will have with the money raised going to the electrical project will be our Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, August 27. With that being said we are holding a meeting on Wednesday, July 6 at 6:30 PM. to start making preparation for the Spaghetti Dinner. We would like anyone interested in helping with this first event to come and give your ideas. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Some say tomato—and some say tomahto—you know the old song. What do you say when you arrive at church and see a font prepared, a baby in the wings, the paschal candle burning? Well, maybe you will say that “we’re having a baptism today,” or maybe you say “we are having a christening.” The proper term is baptism, since that is the name of the sacrament. But the persistent use of “christening” in our culture, probably from due to the influence of the Episcopal Church, is interesting. Baptism, an ancient word, is from the Greek meaning to dip or to dunk. Christening is an Old English word that describes perfectly well that more than getting splashed with water, the person being baptized is being “Christ-ed.” No matter what you call it, there’s always water involved, and then an anointing with chrism—fragrant olive oil consecrated as a sign of Christ’s presence— poured upon the brow as we say, “As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life.” So, in being Christ-ed, you are conformed to his image, your life is expected to be a retelling of his life in miniature and you—even though you may be squirming or sleeping—are commissioned to be a priest, a prophet, a king. This means that you are called to be one who worships, you are called to speak the truth, you are called to shape the world and exercise right judgment. That is the deepest treasure of our tradition, and every time you gather to celebrate a baptism, you renew your vows precisely so that you can be more “Christ-ed.” No matter what vocabulary you assign to the liturgy, the key is transformation of the human person in the community of the Body of Christ. —Rev.
