www.doversherborn.org May 31, 2016 Dear Students, Congratulations on nearly completing sixth grade. Summer is on its way! We hope you and your family and friends have plans to rest, relax, and create lasting memories. In preparation for seventh grade, please read as much as you can over the summer. There are several outstanding titles for middle school readers available in libraries, bookshops, on e‐readers, and as audio books. We hope that you will use the time away from school to read stories that entertain and challenge you. Take time to read about things that make you curious. Consider reading titles you discover at the Readers’ Convention in June. Before you return to school, please read one set of the following books: Option 1: Tracking Trash: Flotsam, Jetsam, and the Science of Ocean Motion by Loree Griffin Burns and Trash by Andy Mulligan Option 2: The Secret of the Yellow Death: A True Story of Medical Sleuthing by Suzanne Jurmain and Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson Option 3: Titanic: Voices from the Disaster by Deborah Hopkinson and Dangerous Waters: An Adventure on the Titanic by Gregory Mone Option 4: How to Speak Dog: A Guide to Decoding Dog Language by Aline Alexander Newman and Gary Weitzman and Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin Option 5: The Hive Detectives: Chronicle of a Honey Bee Catastrophe by Loree Griffin Burns and Hour of the Bees by Lindsay Eagar Being able to compare a work of fiction with a non‐fiction text is an important skill we will develop in seventh grade. These summer reading titles provide us an opportunity to practice these skills early in the year. Please take time to record the titles and authors of the books you read during the summer on the back of this letter. Please bring it with you on the first day of school. We look forward to meeting you. Sincerely yours,
