NORTHEAST HARBOR LIBRARY Volume 14, No. 2 | Summer 2017

Library Tea Party: Twenty Three Years! The Northeast Harbor Library's first tea party was February 14, 1994.  The late Dodie Pierce, a wonderful volunteer, suggested the idea to coincide with an exhibit of teapots in the Patterson Room at that time.  Originally the Tea Party was accompanied by an exhibit of dolls and many doll tea sets;  some girls came dressed like their dolls, and some older dolls from the community were brought.  We borrowed a silver tea service and tea cups from the Union Church, to add to the beautiful tea cups owned by the Library.  Older girls poured tea at the main table and guests were seated in the children’s room. The refreshments have always been home-made, donated by mothers and friends of the Library. When  we were located in the Neighborhood House, we held the tea party upstairs in the Great Hall. In 2008, after we moved into our present building,Trisha Pope took over as coordinator. Nowadays, everyone is welcome. This year we even had music – a string quartet from MDES!

Thank you! We are so grateful for all our volunteers and our partnerships with other organizations. Here are some of the ways volunteers have helped out at the library these past six months:

Just before Valentines Day we held a card making workshop. New patron Holly Riordan donated a huge box of craft supplies! Over the winter, Tom Walsh kindly fixed several broken chairs. Letter from the Director Looking back over the past six months, there is a wonderful sense of community that permeates the building despite the dark and cold of winter outside. We are so grateful for all the support that enables the library to function smoothly; donations of funds and labor are both critical. As you can see in this newsletter, volunteers help shelve books, repair furniture, water plants, clean up the grounds and work at our “Down Under” book sale. Our time-honored tradition of tea parties is also made possible by volunteers. During these months we have held Saturday morning workshops, a monthly film series, a poetry series, Women’s Book Group meetings, First Friday Coffee House events,  pre-school story hours and many lego club sessions. In the spring we interviewed and accepted 15 first-time applicants to our Scholarship Program. We wish all the Mount Desert Elementary School 8th grade graduates success in their high school careers and look forward to welcoming back the returning MDES students in the fall. The summer months are full of interesting activities for children of all ages and adult programs that cover a wide range of topics. I hope you will dip into these offerings. It does take a village and I am so happy to be a part of this one! Many thanks again for all you do for the Northeast Harbor Library. Elly Andrews
