Summer 2017 Spotlight Bloomington Area Career Center

SkillsUSA State Championships The Bloomington Area Career Center took 77 students from 10 different BACC programs in 17 different competition categories to the SkillsUSA State Championships in Springfield, IL this past April. Students who attended the State Conference not only had the chance to show off their CTE Skills, but also had the opportunity to practice soft skills, time management skills, and meet with business and industry professionals. The Bloomington Area Career Center is very proud of each student that attended the conference and recognizes the hard work and dedication each student put into their competition. This year the BACC will be representing the state of Illinois with 16 competitors and 3 State Officers at the SkillsUSA National Conference held in Louisville, Kentucky in June. Please help us congratulate the following students for their 1st-3rd place finishes at the 2017 SkillsUSA State Championships, and wish all 1st place winners good luck on their way to Nationals! From the Desk of Our Director The 2016-2017 year has come to a successful close with many accomplishments occurring throughout the school year. We have had the pleasure of working with over 450 great students. Many BACC students are leaving with different credentials, certificates, and college credit for their hard work in their courses. This includes a new group of Certified Nursing Assistants, students with restaurant Sanitation Certification, students with AED/CPR certifications, First Responder certifications, hours earned towards state certification in cosmetology, software certifications in Civil Engineering and Digital Media, automotive repair training, and OSHA 10 Certification. Other students qualified to challenge the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic exam, while some earned dual credit through Heartland Community College in Metals, Health Careers & Medical Terminology, Nurse Assistant, EMT/Basic and Digital Media courses and dual credit in Fire Science and Culinary programs at Illinois Central College and Joliet Junior College. Throughout the year, the support for BACC and our students has been tremendous. There are numerous groups and individuals to thank for their assistance with our programming and training. This includes the parents and students themselves for support and hard work, the home schools that send the students to the BACC programs and provide support throughout the school year, and the many business and industry partners that provide classroom assistance such as speakers, field trip sites, soft skill training workshops and more. I would also like to use this opportunity to thank the faculty and staff of BACC, who continue to put in countless hours to provide quality opportunities for our students. Their dedication and professionalism are appreciated! Our seniors have graduated—best of luck in your next steps into postsecondary training and a career. I encourage all students and parents to keep in contact with us, through our Facebook page and/or web page, as we love to hear from our graduates and their continued successes. Enjoy your summer! -Mr. Tom Frazier, Director

3 Years, 4 Courses NCHS Senior and soon to be graduate, Tyler Erickson, has taken 4 different courses over a three year period of time at BACC. He started his BACC career as a sophomore, the first sophomore to take the Health Careers and Medical Terminology course. He followed that successful venture with the successful completion of the Nurse Assisting class as a junior. This year, Tyler has been enrolled in EMT-Basic and Fire Science. Tyler has been highly successful academically at BACC, while taking advantage of different opportunities at BACC, including job shadowing, job interviewing workshops, and leadership opportunities.

Tyler chose to take four classes over three years for several reasons. He referenced his enjoyment of his Health Careers and Medical Terminology course, stating he enjoyed Mrs. Kuska and the relevance the course provided to his career goals. He further pursued BACC health science courses because of his future career goals and the relevance the BACC courses provide to link with his future, as NCHS does not offer Health Science programming. He found this a great way to get these experiences at a relatively free cost, during high school, prior to starting his coursework at college. Through his BACC experiences, Tyler has earned his CNA certification. He is CPR/AED certified, and plans to complete and obtain his EMTBasic certification. Finally, Tyler has earned 22 hours of dual credit, 19 at HCC and 3 at ICC (Fire Science) program. He has built quite a resume prior to graduating from high school. Tyler offers advice to high school students, “take advantage of the programming that is offered. It is a really good experience that gets you real-life experiences, whether in the classroom, at the Fire Station, or in clinicals at the nursing home.” After graduation, Tyler plans to attend Heartland Community College and pursue his Radiography degree. He plans to earn his Associates in Applied Science degree, and then pursue jobs in the field.

BHS, BACC and Sara Raymond Partner on Project BHS Freshmen, Zack Marvel and Jeffry Shoemaker, were recognized on April 24, at Sara Raymond School for their work adapting motorized children’s cars for handicapped children. They have completed one that is in use at Raymond and are currently developing changes on two additional cars. Some of the changes to vehicles include the additional of a safety handle and switch for the adult, a large push button switch instead of the usual foot pedal, as well as the addition of special seat belts to accommodate the children’s needs. One of the vehicles has a removable booster seat for a smaller child and another is being adapted to accommodate a child who unable to sit up. Physical therapist, Jaime Ridgeway, contacted Tom Frazier of the Bloomington Area Career Center in the fall about this program. Besides the two students from Bloomington High School’s Basic Material Tech class, others students from the BACC programs of Automotive Technology, taught by Dennis Garrison, and Digital Media taught by Katherine White were involved. Mr. Garrison assisted with wiring of the new switches as well welding the parent handles. Ms. White class created and installed several decals. Mr. Ben Ambler teaches the Basic Materials Tech class and coordinated the project. It was very gratifying for Zach and Jeffry to see children have fun driving the car that they worked on.
