Maestro Federico Cortese joined the BUTI faculty in 2009 as Principal Conductor and led the YAO in the first and second concerts of the season. YAO performed Symphony No. 3 of Brahms, Barber’s Medea’s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance, and Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine for the first concert, and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, and Gershwin’s Cuban Overture for the second concert. The Beethoven and the Gershwin were reprised for Tanglewood On Parade on July 28th in the Koussevitzky Music Shed. Leading the orchestra for his third consecutive season, Maestro Paul Haas (YAVP ’87, ’88) conducted Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 for the YAO’s final concert of the season. The flutes of the YAO were invited to participate in the BSO’s celebration of Sir James Galway’s 70th Birthday on August 1st. They were part of a large flute ensemble that included members of the BSO, TMC, and a group of children drawn from a broad spectrum of ages and locations who performed with Sir James and the BSO Swing Song by Derek Bermel, commissioned by the BSO for this occasion.

YAWE students Rachel Winder and Juan Zuniga Photo: Emily Culler

David Martins led the YAWE in their first concert featuring works by Williams, Persichetti, Syler, Ellerby, and Gorb. Also featured was faculty ensemble Triton Brass who performed two selections from Four Pieces for Brass Quintet by Paquito D’Rivera. The second concert, conducted by H. Robert Reynolds, included works by Ticheli, Thomson, Lindroth, Grantham, Wilson, Bach, and Mackey and a performance of David Maslanka’s Quintet for Winds No. 3 (mvt. 1) by faculty ensemble Vento Chiaro. A new edition to the curriculum introduced YAWE students to the principals of the Alexander Technique in sessions taught by BU Assistant Professor Betsy Polatin.

Legendary flutist and BU/BUTI faculty member Doriot Anthony Dwyer was Principal Flute of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) for 38 years (1952-1990). Ms. Dwyer, a cousin of the famous suffragist Susan B. Anthony, was the first woman to win a principal chair in a major U.S. orchestra. Before joining the BSO she earned the Bachelor of Music degree and a Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and served as first flute of the National Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She joined the BU School of Music and BUTI faculties in 1973, and received an honorary doctorate from Harvard University in 1982. On February 16, 2010, BUTI will host a benefit concert in honor of Ms. Dwyer at the BU College of Fine Arts Concert Hall. BUTI Director Phyllis Hoffman remarks, “BUTI takes great pride in its long and fruitful association with Doriot Anthony Dwyer who holds a unique place in the world of music. To honor her is to reflect on the enormity of her contribution to BUTI as among its most distinguished faculty members.” Contact Emily Culler at [email protected] or 617-353-8995 for information about this event.

Young Artists Orchestra violinist David Ramos returned to BUTI in 2009 for his second summer as a Surdna Foundation Scholar. David, who grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, was a 2008 Sphinx Competition Semi-Finalist and is now a freshman at Indiana University majoring in violin performance. David comes from a musical family; his parents Manuel and Catherine Lehr Ramos are First Violinist and Assistant Principal Cellist (respectively) in the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and David’s sister, Elizabeth, also attended the BUTI Young Artists Orchestra in 2001 and went on to receive the Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute in 2006. Of his BUTI experience, David says: “The opportunity to play in this ensemble with so many talented people is an experience I will not forget. Seeing my peers playing at such a high level gave me inspiration to further my own technique and musicality. My future plans are not completely clear to me, but I know that whatever I do will involve music. I know that I will be happy because music will be a part of my life, be it as an orchestral musician, chamber musician, teacher or even a conductor.”

“BUTI”fication Project: New Dormitory Furniture Donated in Spring of 09

Groton Place circa 1930 New matching sets brighten and add comfort to the rooms.

Groton Place 2009

In the spring of 2009, BUTI acquired 300 new sets of dormitory furniture for its campus in Lenox. Generously donated by the BU Office of Housing and sponsored by the BU Office of the Provost, the furniture replaces hundreds of aging and mismatched pieces and is being installed in two phases. The first phase was completed before the start of the 2009 season and the remaining upgrades will be in place for the 2010 season. You can help BUTI continue to make improvements to the historic West Street Campus by making a tax-deductible donation to the BUTI Gift Fund. Contributions can be made over the phone by calling 617-353-8995, or mailed to: BUTI c/o Emily Culler, 855 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215. Groton Place History: Originally built in 1858 as one of the magnificent Berkshire summer cottages and called “The Elms” (pictured above left), Groton Place was later rebuilt and renamed by subsequent owners. During the Depression, formerly wealthy owners either sold or abandoned their extravagant summer residences. Groton Place eventually became an educational facility with its current dormitories and instructional spaces (pictured above right) spread across the 64-acre estate originally notable for its exquisite landscaping. After renting the property for several years, BU purchased the estate for BUTI in 1986. Nine trucks and a crew of twenty men moved $375,000 worth of new furniture from Boston to Lenox in April.

Old furniture is stacked outside of Lenox Hall for removal. Phase 2 of the dormitory upgrades includes the removal of old built-in furniture and interior repainting.

Drs. Chester and Joy Douglass’s relationship to BUTI began when their daughter, Jenny, attended the Young Artists Orchestra program in 1983 and 1984. Since 2004, Dr. Douglass has chaired the BUTI Advisory Board and also sits on the Dean’s Advisory Board for the BU College of Fine Arts. A proud alumnus of the American Boy Choir, Dr. Douglass chairs its Board of Directors. From 1978-2008, Dr. Douglass was Department Chair of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. For many years, Dr. Joy Douglass taught music in the Newton, MA Public School System and more recently retired as a part-time member of the BU Music Education faculty. Jenny Douglass is first chair violist of the Marin Symphony in San Rafael, CA, a member of the Laurel Ensemble, and regular substitute with the San Francisco Symphony. She lives in California with her husband and two children. The Douglass’s son, Anthony, served as a stage crew member at BUTI and the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) and subsequently earned two Master of Music degrees: one in African Drumming from the California Institute of the Arts and the second in Music Education from the Boston Conservatory. We salute the Douglasses for their continued guidance, generosity, and dedication to BUTI!
