The Portrait—Part 31

John 10:22-42

March 10/11, 2012

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 10:24 Given what the Jews already knew, their motive was questionable. They were not seeking clarity to worship Jesus. This was another attempt to trap Him.

whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, to call Himself the Son of God? 11) 10:37-38 If the Jews would even believe only on the basis of the miracles, then they would know the Father, and that would open the way for them to know the Son and believe on Him.

2) 10:25-27 From the perspective of human responsibility, the Jews did not believe because they deliberately rejected the truth. From the standpoint of divine sovereignty, they did not believe because they were not His sheep.

12) 10:39-40 Not unexpectedly, the challenge fell on deaf ears.

3) A full understanding of how those two realities—human responsibility and divine sovereignty—work together lies beyond human comprehension; but there is no difficulty with them in the infinite mind of God.

GREEK WORDS Megas (meg'-as)— (+ fear) exceedingly :- great (-est), high, large, loud, mighty, + (be) sore (afraid), strong Kalos—excellent or beautiful

4) Jesus did not reduce the responsibility of the unbelievers in the slightest. That they were not Jesus’ sheep did not excuse them; it indicted them. 5) 10:28-29 Nowhere in Scripture is there a stronger affirmation of the eternal security of all true Christians. Jesus plainly taught that the security of the believer does not depend on human effort. It is grounded in the gracious sovereign election, promise, and power of God and God alone. 6) 10:30-31 The Jews had no difficulty in processing the full force of what Jesus said. They instantly recognized that He claimed absolute equality with the Father! 7) 10:32 Jesus demanded that His accusers think through his life: Was there not something incongruous about religion objecting to the healing of paralytics or the curing of someone born blind? 8) Jesus did not soften His claim to be equal with God. Instead, He forced them to face and to deal with tangible, inescapable proof of oneness with God. 9)Note—Jesus, having been charged with blasphemy, did not claim that they had misunderstood Him . 10) 10:34-36 The Law that the Jews prized so highly used the term “gods” to refer to others than God Himself. If mere men could in some sense be called gods, how could it be inappropriate for Jesus, the One

13) “…I told you, and you do not believe…” These are not the words you want to hear Jesus say to you one day!

FOR THE WEEK AHEAD

6 realities binds every true Christian forever to God-vs 27-29  Believers are His sheep, and it is the duty of the Good Shepherd to protect His flock… to suggest a true Christian can be lost is to deny the truth of Jesus own words  Christ’s sheep have eternal life. To speak of eternal life ending is a contradiction in terms.  Christ gives eternal life to His sheep. Since we did nothing to earn it, we can do nothing to lose it.  Christ promised that His sheep will never perish. Were even one to do so, it would make Him a liar.  No one- not false prophets, demons or even the Devil himself is powerful enough to snatch Christ’s own out of His hand.  Christ’s own are held not only in His hand, but also in the hand of the Father, who is greater than all Infinitely secure, the believer’s “life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3)
