State Track & Field Meet Information Congratulations! You have earned a chance to compete in the premier athletic event in the State of Nebraska. As a state qualifier, you join an elite group of athletes who get to come together for two days in May for the opportunity to run, throw, jump, and vault with other individuals or relay teams from the 32 schools in Class A. My best hope is that you will be a competitor, not a participant. Clothing Be prepared! Check weather forecasts and bring appropriate clothing. Room • • •

Reminders You are responsible for your room, please take care of it. Use your cell phone or a phone card—don’t charge phone calls to your room. Room check on Saturday morning before we leave for the track.

Money Bring money for meals you will pay for (Friday lunch and Saturday dinner). You may also want to get a State Meet t-shirt ($20). Valuables Please leave all valuables at home. Behavior Remember that you are participating in a school-sponsored activity. All school and team policies apply. Please be advised that you may be sent home from the meet for policy infractions or uncooperative behavior. Travel Release Athletes wanting to return home early must have a parent with them to sign out with Coach Stern or Coach Fyfe. Friendly Advice • Sleep is vital to your performance—get plenty of it! •

Be careful what you select to eat. The State Track & Field Meet is not a good time to try new foods, start a diet, or pull a chair up to the buffet. Try to eat the same amounts of the same kinds of foods you normally eat—your body will appreciate it.



Drink plenty of water.



Stay out of the sun as much as possible.



Respect your roommates’ needs for quiet and privacy. Spending time away from home with people you don’t normally live with can be stressful—a little courtesy and understanding will go a long way.



I have learned over the years that the State Meet has a life of its own. It takes tremendous focus and concentration to avoid being caught up in everything that is going on and forgetting what you are there for. It is possible to have a successful State Meet and have fun—you just have to use good judgment.

State Track & Field Meet Goals Please take a few minutes to visit with your event coaches to discuss goals for the State Track Meet. Goals should focus on performance, not on factors that you cannot control, such as the performance of others. Here are some suggestions for goals you might use as you prepare yourself to compete: •

A relay team record.



A better performance than you had at the District Meet.



A better performance than you had at last year’s State Meet.



Add your name to the Lady Islander Grade Level Top-Ten chart.
